It's odd. In the recent direct during Rex's Mii outfit bit, Sakurai said DLC was planned with the base roster, eliminating the possibility for anyone from a game after 2016

But in an interview a few months before that, he said he hadn't even begun thinking about DLC and would wait to finish ultimate before getting started, opening the possibility to recent characters.

He's lying about one of these two, but which?

First off I apologize to the insiders for doubting them

Secondly, DLC especially the first season is probably done and has been done for a long while.

-Meetings, rights negotiations, design drafts, moveset drafts

-modeling,rigging,animating, voice acting, balancing ect

All don't happen in a few months.

If anything polish could be being done but anything else on season one...? NOT A CHANCE.

I think in general, our community here is kinda out of touch from what younger smash fans would really want. Minecraft, and yes Fortnite, would be probably two of the most popular DLCs they could possibly do.

Steve from Minecraft. Minecraft discussions happened that lead to my knowledge that content is planned to be present. I have been told it could be an AT, stage, item, or "possibly" a character. It looks like character, stage, and theme will be how if what Hitagi has heard is accurate. At this point, I do not doubt it much.

Of note: he himself is not confirming anything, just commenting on things and saying he personally believes them and that overall they seem to mesh/line up.

If Steve makes it...he's the only character I am not getting for the DLC.

At first I hated the idea of steve, but I've opened up to it.
I know most of us veteran smash fans either won't care or have a distaste for Steve if he gets in.

But I'm also aware that it'd be a big moneymaker DLC, and introduce a potentially large younger fans to smash.

I don't think it's likely, but only because the game was never huge in Japan.

If Nintendo wanted to make the most popular DLC possible, DQ Rep, Steve and Dovahkiin are almost sure things in my mind.

I can't complain if Sora and Steve get in Smash, but they really do limit our options. Assuming both get in, that means we only have three more characters, and what are the odds that Bandana Dee, Dixie, a Champion are the last three characters? And what about upcoming games? Will Gen 8 have to wait until next time?

Guess I'm experiencing the same anxiety as any other Smash fan. It's just stressful trying to be realistic and guess which of your favorite characters has a genuine chance, accounting for more "suprise characters" that could get in instead.

The difference is, Minecraft might not be as trendy, but it's 100 times more popular than fortnite, again, it's the second most popular game in history and in many different ways it earned itself a spot in smash (most succesful indie ever, worked with nintendo for a while and more)

I mean, sure, it might be a little odd. But I consider it redeemable as long as you're self aware of how likely it actually is... And you're working to make it more likely.

Take it from me. I'm rooting for 2B the most out of the other potential newcomers, and while I think she's a potential likely candidate for the Enix Rep, that's probably not gonna happen unless sakurai decides to add someone who isn't part of the fighters pass again, or he lied again but the DLC having been planned at the start of Ultimate.

If Steve's in, it was likely Sakurai's choice. And yes, I would be pretty upset if he went with a relevant character over one with the popularity and history with Nintendo.

The only consolation is he's not in the base, so I don't have to buy him. But the days of living as if Banjo was included in Smash 64 are looking like they're gone. Still hope it's not true, but we've seen where this got us.

By putting in a character from the second most prolific videogame in existence behind only Tetris compared to a character only really known/desired by a vocal cult of 90's kids?

One of these things would be tone deaf, but I don't think it's the one you're thinking.

Still though; the first Western third-party character in Smash is one that potentially gets in over long-time big names like Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, and even Lara Croft. It's the biggest monkey paw wish result possible.

At least we'll have a good idea of who actually was #1 on the ballot.

The characters that get into Smash are the ones that Sakurai requests. This was made abundantly clear in the interview regarding cloud. Even Square Enix recognize how important Smash is and listened to the man,

If Sakurai wants Banjo, that's who he's going to get. If Sakurai wants Steve, that's who he's going to get. Microsoft isn't going to dictate who Sakurai gets to pick. Phil Spencer himself has already said that he's absolutely willing to let Banjo be in the game. I don't know why this is still confusing for people.

Besides, why would Microsoft need to promote Minecraft? It's already one of the best-selling games of all time, it doesn't need any more recognition. Plus, if Microsoft only cared about "$", then they'd make a Minecraft 2, but they've repeatedly said that they won't because they care about their fans and don't would rather continue servicing the main game instead of fracturing the playerbase.

I think I understand why so many people are upset with the direct, it makes so much sense, it's because they didn't call Kencineroar's trailer "Pokemon Masters". This is an unforgivable mistake and Sakurai MUST retire for his actions.

Sakurai should have retired already for not letting Bowser say SHOWTIME during his entrance animation.

Though I believe she technically does have the Nintendo appearance, through Phantasy star online 2.

Granted, all that does is qualify her for being on a nintendo console in some form, and showing Enix likes pushing for her. That's about it, though.

I wouldn't be supporting 2B if it weren't for that because I know of how much more unlikely she'd be, but I suppose my reasoning towards her inclusion has lots of looking too into things, bias, and hoping Enix and Sakurai like her almost as much as I do.

Sakurai said in the direct that they havent started work on dlc characters, so they could put all their efforts towards the base game with the exception of piranha plant who probably just wasnt ready in time.

I think he was planned as free DLC. He really sticks out from the base roster.

Grandblue Fantasy is such an out there concept, imo. I would love for the bridge between mobile and console to be lowered a bit, but my innate bias has yet to catch up. If there is a mobile company to represent in Smash, Cygames is definitely the best choice to make, but Grandblue, despite being one of their most popular games seems like an odd choice over using either one of their long established characters that fans more fans would recognize or choosing a Dragalia Lost character which is a Nintendo x Cygames IP that Cygames has stated that they intend to make their main game.

I think people are misinterpreting what Sakurai said.

Sakurai mentioned that XC2 was announced after the planning for Ultimate was finished, so Rex was unable to make the roster. He never specifically brought up DLC when he said this, so I don't think he was referring to DLC here. Unless Sakurai already knew who would be DLC roughly three years in advance, I think he was talking about how the base game was decided somewhere in early 2016.
