I'm sticking with this avatar because it's pretty cool with a capital C.
So, let's say we're getting 10 DLC characters. What combination of 10 characters would make this the Ultimate Smash Bros. game for you?
For the sake of constancy, let's assume Grinch leak is real and Incineroar is also in.
Here's mine:
- Sora
- Lloyd Irving
- Joker
- Paper Mario
- Bandana Dee
- Euden
- Crash Bandicoot
- Rex and Pyra
- Capcom Rep (Either Phoenix Wright, Monster Hunter, Dante, or all of the above)
- Bethesda Rep (Either Doom Guy or a Fallout character)
I'll extend it to 15:
- Spring Man/Ribbon Girl
- 2B
- Ryu Hayabusa
- New Nintendo IP character
- Edelgard
10 characters, huh? Well, for fun, instead of going for my own personal most wants, I'm gonna do what I believe would get the most hype around the board.
I'm also going to limit myself to 4 third parties and add in 4 echo fighters, for 14 total. That being said, here's my list:
- Spring Man. This one is an obvious choice for DLC. He's the only (and first) real Switch-born mascot Nintendo has currently. The Switch currently has no reps who originate from the Switch, and Spring Man would be a perfect addition. With over 1 million sales, it hit the top of fighting game charts, and touched a lot of people.
- Kid Cobra (e). This one took me a lot of thought, but I think Kid Cobra would be a fitting echo fighter. Why over Ribbon Girl? For starters, Kid Cobra and Spring Man have more similar playstyles in ARMS than Ribbon Girl has. Spring Man is an all-around character, and Kid Cobra is near that, being fast and having auto cancelled aerials. Ribbon Girl differs in her multi jump mechanic. I also find style wise they're much more different than Spring Man is with Ribbon Girl; Ribbon and Spring share a stylistic design, where Kid Cobra differs from that.
- Skull Kid. Another obvious choice. Zelda needs another rep, and everyone knows Skull Kid is the big choice to represent the franchise. Fans want him, I want him, and he'll be a solid pick.
- Tingle. Okay, you say. Why Tingle, if we're already getting Skull Kid? Isn't Tingle already on the Termina Bay stage, you shout. Well, yes, yes he is. And why? Well, imagine the reveal of Skull Kid. It's expected, everyone's hyped, and the world is excited for the first new Zelda rep since Melee. Well, then, out of nowhere, Tingle shows up, a second unique fighter! The two are marketed together, and people go nuts. And, if Tingle is in the fight, Alfonzo takes his place on the balloon. Alfonzo: Leave it to me!
- Jibanyan. An interesting choice that'd be sent out for the Japanese market. Yokai Watch is big out there, and with a new game coming soon, it'd be the perfect time to drop this little guy into Smash. Besides, he's so cute, how can you be mad he snuck into the fray?
- Rayman. Here he is. He's loved, he's well known, a gaming icon and a huge fan request. Ubisoft is an easy third party pick with their partnership with Nintendo.
- Sora. Here he is, Square Enix's third character in Smash. Sora is another character seeing a lot of publicity right now in the Smash community, and I think that publicity will be enough to push the guy into being DLC.
- Dixie Kong. I firmly believe Dixie Kong is a perfect choice for DLC. She'd get the Isabelle treatment from Diddy, where she'd share a couple moved (Banana down B and Side B), but get her own unique aerials, tilts, recovery, and neutral B. It's Free Real Estate, and would nicely bump up the DK rep numbers.
- Bandana Waddle Dee. Here's another one for the Japanese market. Kirby's only gotten bigger over the years, and this little guy has wedged himself in as the 4th of the main cast of Kirby characters. He's a cute little guy and would make a lot of people happy.
- Lara Croft. That's right. I made a post in this general a couple weeks ago that included her that led to some... mixed reactions. But, here me out. Lara Croft is one of the biggest gaming icons EVER. She's appeared on Nintendo consoles before, and has a strong presence in the gaming and non gaming world. She's the PERFECT out of left field, shock, Cloud Strife-like reveal. Something seeming so impossible now, yet makes so much sense in the long run.
- Scorpion. The final full character to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It doesn't sound possible. It sounds insane, just too crazy to be possible. A HUGE gaming icon of the 90s, from a franchise known for its gore and violence. It sounds unbelievable, and that's why I chose him. Because to even predict this guy, you have to be crazy. Which is why I think he could make it in. A trailer reveal that has the long disputed and long awaited battle of the ages: Ryu vs Scorpion.
- Sub Zero (e). Can't have Scorpion without this guy.
- Louie (e). You know, this one took a bit of thought, but in the end, I can't think of a better echo fighter than Louie. Pikmin has been in Smash since Brawl with only one rep, and frankly, with the way Olimar is built, an echo fighter would be just too easy to pull off. Louie is a fan favorite in Smash, and would make for a great character that Pikmin fans would love. (Plus, he's adorable!)
- Ninten (e). For our last echo fighter, I've chosen Ninten. MOTHER fans clamor for any content that they can get, and usually, that's directly out of Smash. This is the first Smash game, however, that doesn't have a new character or stage for the franchise! It's a bit of a bummer, but something as simple as Ninten would make an entire fandom cry out for joy. Make it Ness with a teleport, and you've got an amazing new roster member.
Honorable Mentions: Crash Bandicoot, Sephiroth, Shantae, Paper Mario, Black Shadow, Lip, Octoling (e), Funky Kong (e), Goku, Rex + Pyra, Elma, Phoenix Wright, Amaterasu, Crono.
I put WAY too much effort into this. Tell me what you guys think? Is this crazy enough? I think I could've gone wilder, but I'm happy with my choices. I think I got around to every part of the Smash fandom I could while leaving in surprises that'd make people go nuts.
