Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Ah, I just came up with another idea for a good Squad Strike Battle:

:ultdoc::ultroy::ultmewtwo::ultpichu::ultyounglink:

VS

:ultpokemontrainer::ulticeclimbers::ultwolf::ultlucas::ultsnake:
The Melee Cuts vs the Brawl Cuts.

Admittedly, the "Brawl Cuts" side takes some liberties with the specifics of its cuts, but still.
I think it's actually really cool that I can make this happen evenly, since Melee and Brawl each lost exactly "5" characters in the transition to the following game.

Now that I think of it, Dark Samus could always be the one who wears a Phazon Suit Reference. Though technically, she wears it all the time when she became Dark Samus in the first place, but you get the point. Either one could work but I'd want that on Normal Samus above all else.

I'm aware. Would we consider Shadow a good character then?

Certainly better than Infinite, I'd say. Wouldn't say he beats Gaara though
Yes, he was great in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 2006.

He was pretty badly written in multiple media but I don't think it erases the cool parts of his character, just like the Other M doesn't make Samus a bad character.

He's not the best character in Sonic but I think he gets a lot of underserved slack for the bad parts of the franchise.

He's never gonna live down having guns in his own game. You know that right?

Or Riding Motorcycles that move slower than he runs? Or Cursing in what's typically a kid's series?(Although there's been mild swearing in Mega Man and I think the DK rap, but Shadow gets most of the flack for it.)

Yeah, but I can appreciate Sega having the balls to say "yeah no, we're keeping this character instead of relegating him to a weird phase in our development lives."

So for Sonic fans, he can develop as a character and not be garbage pre-teen bait and for non-Sonic fans, the edgy meme is kept relevant.

He isn't even an anti-hero. Shadow was evil in SA2 because he wanted vengeance for the death of his childhood best friend up until his heel face turn at the end of the game. Ever since Battle and STH he pretty much just fights to protect humanity, that's why he tried to destroy Emerl and why he joined the military.

If only I could have a body that looked like that. No matter how many routines I do, I don't think I'll ever approach the "ideal"
Meh. If you looked like that in real life, you’d probably end up with crippling back pain. That’s the great thing about fictional characters, their rules are not our rules. :)

I mean, yeah, they often would snap like a twig under their disporportions, but it still makes me feel inferior despite one being fake.

You know here's a good way to describe
"Kill all humans and Earth, it's what my sister who got murdered by the military would want"
*endgame flashback proving the contrary*

So, moving the focus to a more...sensible topic, how would you rank the third party characters based on how much you like them in their own series?
My ranking:
#1 :ultsnake:
#2. :ultbayonetta:
#3.:ultsimon:
#4.:ultrichter:
#5. :ultmegaman:
#6.:ultcloud:
#7.:ultryu:
#8. :ultpacman:
#9. :ultsonic:
  1. :ultsnake:
  2. :ultsimon:
  3. :ultrichter:
  4. :ultryu:
  5. :ultcloud:
  6. :ultbayonetta:
  7. :ultsonic:
  8. :ultmegaman:
  9. :ultpacman:
I judged them by how they are as characters so seeing Pac-Man and Mega Man at the bottom shouldn't be surprising. Sonic has like absolutely no growth personality wise between games, understandably. Bayonetta has the least of the rest, Cloud went from intriguing to kind of generic in Advent Children, Ryu always has the same goal but a drive anyways, Richter from Rondo to Symphony is super cool, Simon has a hell of an arc in Simon's Quest even though barely anyone has seen it, and Snake's growth from Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid 4 is just... so good.

I mean X kinda has the same but "WHY MUST REPLOIDS FIIIIIIGHT"
Mega Man games are all about projectile combat with mostly flashy sci-fi weapons, all of which are shot out of Popeye sized Robot Arms and not realistic guns, held by cartoony animal people. If the weapons were entirely cartoony or sci-fi, like the Coconut Gun and Peanut Guns in DK64, there'd be less complains. The reason that game gets made fun of more than Mega Man or DK64 is because of how it's a tonal shift from what you expect from that series. I think that's pretty damn obvious.

In terms of swearing, Mega Man X only said Damn twice, and I think Bass did the same originally in MM7(which got changed to darn in a later re-release). And some part of the OG DK Rap.

That said, I think the MMZ games(not that MMX doesn't have it's moments, it still has enough goofiness in it) are way edgier than they need to be, and Battle Network beats it out in terms of the tone being more like Mega Man.

Either way, I've come to the personal conclusion that DK64 is also the "edgiest" DK game(it almost did have more realistic weapons early on).

Yeah, but I can appreciate Sega having the balls to say "yeah no, we're keeping this character instead of relegating him to a weird phase in our development lives."

That's fine, I think the hate for him is a bit overblown too, but I do prefer Tails and Knuckles.

I like Snake. Snake's awesome. Bayonetta and Simon too. I like how kickass Bayonetta is and Simon's probably one of my favorite Casltevania characters.

Trust me, no one worth anyone’s time will judge you according to the same standards they judge fictional characters. Like I think Sm4sh Zamus is a work of freaking art, but if I met someone that looked like that in real life, I’d be too preoccupied with fixing her up with a professional osteopath to fancy her ;)

Hmm. I wonder if I should do a "Game of The Day" daily event in this thread to keep things interesting.
I could tell everyone about a specific game and why I think it's awesome.

Now that I think of it, people don't mind Fox and the gang having near realistic guns either. Again, probably due to the nature of the series from the get having to do with shooting, just in vehicles at first, so the transition to them using sci-fi guns felt less weird. Though people just hated being on foot what-so-ever in Star Fox.

I think the Archie Comics do a good job at handling Mega Man's character. He doesn't get much in the classic series since literally every other Mega Man franchise is more story focused. But MM3, 5, 7 and 9 have small moments.

I don't mind missions on foot. They can't do everything in their Arwings, and we need to see Fox in action outside of it to prove he's a versatile mercenary, otherwise Wolf's just simply got the muscle to prove he's better.

I don't have much of a problem with the Assault style of gameplay either, but Start Fox is primarily an arcade plane shooter, so the on-foot missions should be kept to a minimum to keep the game focused.

Meh. Zelda was also a linear mess before BotW.

Not to discredit those games because I actually love them, but change is welcomed when it's innovative and creative.

Some games just get rushed before completion or handled poorly, to which Adventure unfortunately played into.

Also, I could've sworn Assault was regarded as the last decent or good Star Fox game since Command and Adventures blew chunks

I don't have much of a problem with Assault myself, and it was considered the last decent one, but maybe people have really high expectations.

I've never played any Star Fox games. I heard they weren't that good other than 64.
