Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Was thinking the other day about this, but how would you guys feel about that scrapped battle damage mechanic from Brawl making it in? It somewhat makes sense as to why it wouldn't have been fitting with Smash 4's more bright, colorful style, but by the looks of that trailer, this game might revert back to a more dark, epic kind of tone that Melee and Brawl had.
Smash 4 technically has this with Little Mac; his face gets more damaged and bruised the more times you hit him.

That said, I can certainly imagine a few characters getting this sort of treatment. Mario losing his cap, Bowser Jr.'s clown car getting burned and scratched, and R.O.B.'s opticals breaking. I also imagine a few characters would get special idle animations as if they're tired or exhausted, like Yoshi and the Pokemon.

ARMS characters could make varied semi-clones.

Springman is the first ARMS Smasher.

• Tapping A after a punch attack, launches the opposite arm out for another punch
• Three different elemental arms can be chosen at the character select screen. One for each fist. Same Arm can be chosen.

The semi-clone would have different stats and different arms.

Right, but every argument to this tonight has been about how Spring Man DOES have a significant advantage over the others.
Actually, the majority of what I was responding to was nonsense about how being on the cover makes a character the main character. Which is still ridiculous.

So far the most compelling statements are related to :
-background lore
-alternate versions
-most sellable character to parents

Everything else was completely an opinion, or in the case of Rocket Raccoon, completely circular logic.

Also.... and I hope this isnt a double post as it is not showing as such to me... let me be clear.

I did not mean to imply Twintelle or Min Min is a guarantee as the character.
I merely meant that the game is 100% ensemble, and no character has a significant advantage over the other.

Leading to the conclusion Sakurai will choose whomever he finds most compelling.
And what I'm saying is that Twintelle/Min Min will not make it in over Spring Man

I'd like to contribute this to the discussion. I agree that Spring Man is obviously the Tracer/Ryu of ARMS, however I would also argue that Ribbon Girl is of approximately equal importance in this regard, as she also appears on the cover and in the lion's share of the marketing materials, just like Spring Man does. I could imagine Nintendo/Sakurai possibly choosing Ribbon Girl over Spring Man, if they wanted more girls in the roster, and I could DEFINITELY imagine them giving Spring Man some of Ribbon Girl's abilities in smash so that she could be an alt costume.

Actually, what you have said repeatedly is that Spring Man is on the cover, which makes him the main character. Which is, to quote Bianca del Rio, bologna.

And he's on most of the promotional material. Most games usually have the main character on their promotional material.

I don't know why, but that particular line in this quote really bothers me.

Characters should get in because of who they are, not what they are.

Yes. And most games actually have a main character.

It's not fair for me to conflate many of the actually logical comments with yours. So anyone with further reasons (again, I really appreciate the notes on the background lore and the ability to sell the game to parents), please do Private Message me.

I don't understand how you think Spring Man isn't the ARMS character for Smash?

Not to jump in on this debate in any major way (because I honestly don't care enough to argue about it), but I figured I'd give my opinion...

Spring Man isn't necessarily the main character of ARMS, just as Tracer isn't the main character of Overwatch, I don't think anyone realistically argues either of those points. Like others have said, these are games based on the characters more than a single driven narrative, even if one is present, so at the end of the day, no one character is any more important than another, and no one character is necessarily any more representative of the series than another.

With that being said, like Tracer, Spring Man has primarily been used as the "poster-boy" for ARMS, and while not the main character (as there really isn't one), tends to see most of the spotlight within marketing/brand-identity, and hell somewhat in the game itself (with him being the default for the tutorial as well as the existence of Springtron).

Not knocking the plausibility of Min-Min or Twintelle or any other popular ARMS character getting in, but as the first representative of the series withing Smash, it seems more than likely that they'd start with the character most closely associated with being the "main" character, even if there isn't one. Following that character, is when other choices based on popularity or some other factor would likely be added. For example how Pikachu obviously was the first Pokemon added, and now they can get away with including popular choices like Lucario or Greninja, who while may not be of any more significance than any other character in the series, is undoubtedly one of the more popular choices. It's also the same reason why if an Overwatch character were ever to be added, it would most definitely be Tracer before anyone else. The same reason why we got Ryu.

But who really knows only time will tell.

How many characters do you think will get in through the fighter ballot? Who do you think were the most voted for Nintendo and 3rd party characters?

Spring Man may not be the MAIN character of Arms but he is the face of the series. In that way I guess it is comparable to Pokémon there are plenty of “characters” in Pokémon that can be considered the main character, any of the starters, the Pokémon trainer, but Pikachu is the face, the most promoted, the most profitable, character in the Pokémon franchise. Even 20 years later. I the same way I think it can be stated that Nintendo is trying to push Spring Man in the same way. Contrary to popular belief I don’t think ALL Sakurai thinks about is gameplay, he’s also a businessman. He’s gotta think of the most profitable situations as well.

The argument would be that ARMS doesn't truly have a main character, so the character that gets into Smash would just be the most interesting character.

For instance, Min-Min could be really interesting cause she uses kung-fu kicks and is associated with the Dragon weapons, which could be especially fun in Smash Bros., in addition to having the abilities of any other character in ARMS.

...But I think Spring Man is an established poster boy.

I would generally be inclined to agree, but I'm simply being speculating on what they might do, not what I think would be a good or desirable thing to do. I really love ARMS, but I personally believe it shouldn't get a smash character at all, as it has not proven its importance to Ninetndo as a series in the way, say, Splatoon has.

I strongly suspect the K. Rool and Toad Mii Fighter outfits they sold as DLC mean those 2 did very well.

He's very concerned with artistic integrity, most of the effects of commercialism on his games was from execs twisting his arms. And you thought operating 4 GCCs at once is what crippled him.

No way! It has to be the cow milking guy
Please. Afro-dude is the poster boy of the series, and parents will immediately recognize and buy the game upon seeing his face.

But perhaps a more interesting character, like overweight cowboy, COULD be chosen instead...

How many characters do you think will get in through the fighter ballot? Who do you think were the most voted for Nintendo and 3rd party characters?
It's hard to say exactly who the most voted were considering I'm sure the vocal online community was a minority of the overall votes.

With that being said, I'm sure the choices for this game are heavily going to be reflective of the results. That data (impossibilities and memes aside) must be a gold mine not only for Sakurai and the Smash devs but for Nintendo as a whole. I wouldn't go as far to say that every newcomer in this game will be a highly requested fan-favorite suspected ballot-topper, but I also wouldn't be surprised if got quite a few more popular picks than usual this time around.

That's pretty tough logic to argue against, but you are forgetting to consider the mysterious box with an unknown number of balls in it was the star of the 1-2 Switch manga series

Two or three if I were to guess. Fuzzy Pickles brought it up before, but Brawl's poll only really got us two (confirmed at least) characters in the form of Sonic and Mega Man, and the latter had to wait a game to get in. So assuming that they do draw from the ballot as they said, we probably would only get a couple more with the rest being Sakurai's own picks.

As for who, that's a bit harder to guess since our general polls can be limited in scope and none of us caught Bayonetta as a popular choice. With that said, if the Mii costumes are any indication, King K. Rool, Toad, and Isabelle could've been high up there for Nintendo while those like Monster Hunter could've been popular choices for third party. Inklings as well, though they're more arguable since you could say the costumes were more for promotional purposes like Corrin. Outside of that, characters like Dixie also could've done well since they tend to be decently popular.

The manga isn't canon! We can't have expanded lore compromising the integrity of Smash Bros. Next you'll say we need to incorporate the Nintendo Cinematic Universe even though it's not even the same timeline.

Rosters? I haven't updated mine in two years...I'd add Spring Man now, and trim down the third party characters and some of the veterans I brought back. The idea here was "the maximum amount of characters for a Smash Bros. on Switch, after all DLC."

What do you guys think the release month for this is? I’m thinking it could be September to coincide with Nintendo’s online service, or November since that is a hot release month for big Nintendo releases.

I am 99% certain that it will release in September along with the online service. To me, the only that thing that could cause it to change is if they delay the online service until October or November.
