Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Do you guys think there's any hope of Sakurai/Nintendo revealing the results of the Ballot with the new game?

And do you think there's going to be a new Ballot for this game?
Most of the newcomers for this game will come from the Smash Ballot

Last ballot was not just for the last downloadable character for Smash 4, but research into desired fighters.

Development for Smash 5 probably started soon after.

I think the Fire Emblem franchise will see cuts and additions in Smash. Like what’s been previously stated, Nintendo is pushing Fire Emblem hard, and Sakurai is a big fan of the franchise. Though he said he felt the Fire Emblem Representation was oversaturated somewhat in WiiU/3DS, it’s a popular franchise as a whole.

Also keep in mind though, this new smash will likely have a larger roster, so 6 Fire Emblem Reps may not seem as saturated this time around. Lucina and Roy are the most likely to be cut. Followed by Corrin. Though Roy is a semi clone and a smash fan favorite, and Corrin is unique.

What I predict is we’ll see Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, FE Switch Character, and maybe later on Roy or Lucina as DLC. Maybe even Roy from the get go. I don’t see Lucina returning. At least not in her own roster slot.

As for ways to represent Fire Emblem more, remove them from Assist Trophies, and have the Summoner’s Gun from Fire Emblem Heroes. It could randomly fire out orbs of a certain color (corresponding to the ones on the mobile game) and have various characters of varying strengths and abilities come out and perform some task. Whether it be Hector dealing major damage and knockback, to Ylisse coming out and healing you, to Saizo throwing a serious of sharp kunai. The possibilities are endless.

Edit: I’d love to see Celica as playable, but I see her more of Summoner’s Gun summon.

If they're smart they won't reveal the results. You'd just have a bunch of over-entitled manchildren ******** and screaming about how they got done dirty.
Which they already did when Bayo was revealed as the Ballot character lol

Ideally yes but I think advertisement characters are going to take up a lot of spots on the roster given the plethora of new games coming on the Switch.
Still, they're one small gear in a much larger machine. The games and franchises they make aren't any more important than what the other studios make.
And Nintendo/IS wants all the gears for their favorite franchise they love to push so much. I friggin hate it but it's true.
I did say I was only semi-serious. But still, revealing the results probably wouldn't be the greatest idea, as it will likely cause a lot of unnecessary anger and arguing among Smash fans. It's probably best if we just leave the results unknown.
True but personally I would much rather have the results accesiable to the public so we would know if certain characters are really as popular as we think they are or if there's characters we never considered that much that are actually really popular.

Whoa. I was out on a pub crawl last night and tweeted something stupid and someone I follow tweeted me all in caps SMASH BROS SWITCH. I was pretty drunk and had a freak out of joy in front of my friends and some strangers I'd only met yesterday.

Was almost sad I missed the live reaction but I will never forget when and where I was when I got this news. Excited to see everything that comes next!

While showing the results might be good to some to understand who came close to winning or barely got any votes, it's just going to cause anger and hate on certain characters.

A good example of this is the voting gaunlet in Fire Emblem Heroes.

If they are doing ballot characters. There a lot I wish I would have put on there. I don't think I mentioned Ninten, Waluigi, or Donkey Kong Jr.

But, two of those are clones and I think Waluigi has more than enough support so oh well.
Maybe Waluigi will appear as a Wario character with teh tennis outfit just like teh wario has a bikeman outfit. hehe.

It's weird that Link has his BoTW design and Zelda still has her TP design.
Well, this picture is edited.

Really? SSB is coming to Switch?!

At last, we have convinced Nintendo! But I wish I could have stayed up late at 23:30, then I could have seen that in stream/direct, and I could have posted here first...

Icies, Waluigi, Krool would be cool

Isaac might just be old enough to be retro now, a guy can dream right?
Isaac appeared in Dark Dawn so no. But on that note, I wish Sakurai would consider characters that only appeared during 4th and/or 5th gen too.

Looks like it is finally time to start posting in this board. I've been purposely holding off until we got some sort of confirmation.

Am honestly 50/50 at this point between a port or a new game. My bias would prefer an updated port as I'd rather not deal with the stress of character cuts nor am I interested in buying a new line of Smash amiibo beyond newcomers. 3DS/Wii U had as prefect of a roster as most could hope for and I'd rather not see that lost so soon after development ended.

E3 is probably going to make or break discussion based on what is announced. That said it's awesome to have SWF active again.
Smashboards has always been active. It's just that now we have an announcement and new information to boot, the gang has come back.

What is there to reboot though? The core gameplay is fine, the games are fine, Smash 4 did very well. Reboots only happen to failures, or mixed games, Nintendo has no reason to rock the boat. Removing characters also would be a huge mistake, they'd get torched for doing that.

If you want a simpler Smash, than HD remasters would be the most likely bet.
No reboot pls
Just no
It's going to have to happen sooner or later. We can't
I wouldn't let speculation dictate too much on who is or isn't likely. No one knows any more on who is in the game than anyone else. Other than the dev's themselves.

Mimikyu is at least a very popular pokemon with a lot of marketing behind it with its own song, is a popular and prominent character in the anime and even got its own Z-move in the latest Pokemon games.
If someone put a gun to my head and asked me to bet on a Pokémon newcomer, I'm picking Mimikyu for this reason. Arguably the best promotional character and might be something Sakurai might want to go for anyway since he did add Pichu in Melee. It makes too much sense not to add.
You guys have any favorite "leaks" from the Smash 4 speculation days? I remember a pretty interesting Chorus Kids leak (which I didn't buy) but I think the fake leak that fooled the most of us (not all) was the Rayman leak by ArtsyOmni. I think he even came on the forum and apologized haha.
The Gematsu leak was a doozy. So was the final leak that confirmed the final roster.

I think you guys are looking in potential Ballot Characters a little too much. They won’t dominate the newcomers. If anything we may get 2-3 of the highest ranking realizable characters.

Also, some of the highest ranking ones were vets like Ice Climbers, Wolf, and Snake.

I have a pretty strong feeling that ICs are coming back, but I don’t think they be considered Ballot Characters.

Who cares if IC's come back? The IC's were actually disliked by many. But snake should definetly make a return! Please please please bring snake back Sakurai! I personally don't have anything against IC's I guess, but what are they gonna be without their grab game?

Which reminds me... What mechanic changes do we want to see in Smash switch? (Bring back SHFFL!!!)

Since Bandana Dee's in Star Allies (therefore relevant), what are the odds of getting Bandana Dee on the switch? I think the odds are alright.

Oh yeah, and I rewatched the Smash Switch trailer (you can watch it on Sakurai's website at http://www.smashbros.com/en_US/index.html) and at 0:56, you can see that the picture that NINTENDO Galaxy NINTENDO Galaxy found on the Bayonetta discord is identical to the official picture to the trailer (albeit enhanced and with a white background). From left to right:
Yoshi, Pit, Donkey Kong, Peach, Ness, Marth, Mario, Link, Sheik, Pikachu, Kirby (might be jigglypuff), Samus, Zelda, Bowser, Fox, Captain Falcon, Wario.

Oh yeah, and Inklings are confirmed now.

People hated Icies because they had an infinite pummel in Melee and a chaingrab in Brawl. Also, since Icies were top-tier in brawl, without their chaingrab, they'll be... at the top of the mid-tier? I hope that Wolf, Icies and Snake make it in (though Snake is the least likely), as well.

As for mechanics, L-Cancelling might be a cool return.

That could be part of a gimmick. He can take small hits and retain regular damage, but let’s say you use a charged smash attack. Bowser’s drop kick for instance. Instead of falling of screen or taking heavy damage, Mimikyu’s disguise absorbs the hit and breaks. After it’s broken, he can have a move to repair it, but it just takes precise timing, and is risky to pull off. Ala WFT’s deep breathing. The longer he waits to repair the the quicker it’ll be fixed when he tries to fix it. If he tries immediately after it breaks, it leaves him open to take regular damage and knockback. Wait a few minutes and he can fix it lickty split.

There’s ways to make Mimikyu work. We can see him adjust his Disguise in the anime.
His opinion isn't worth taking seriously. Mimikyu's disguise ability doesn't even need to be in the game.

I personally thought Mimikyu would probably have some kind of super armor unless it receives about 15-25% or so damage before it wears off for the rest of the match (or unless it loses a stock or maybe heals itself with a healing item, maybe) so it would be able to take a hit or two before being flinched, not sure how balanced that would be but I guess that's an option.
No, Mimikyu's disguise ability doesn't need to be in Smash at all. Problem solved. It has everything else it needs.

Stop acting like that poll means something for Smash. It doesn't.
Sakurai probably decided on the roster waaay before that poll.
The point is not that the poll has to do with Smash.

The point is that the most common argument used in Decidueye's favor (the "fact" it's the most popular among the Starters) is inaccurate in at least one circle.

The roster likely was decided at least a year or two ago, depending on when production actually started. But with that in mind, that just makes it harder to determine which Pokémon is most likely.

Your guess is as good as mine
It's weird that Link has his BoTW design and Zelda still has her TP design.
It was probably just replicated using the models of the characters, so her model is probably just there as a placeholder.
I thought about Pauline being included, but I have no idea what they would do for her moveset. In every apperance she’s made, she always... just kinda stands there.

maybe they could make her hat from Odyssey possessed by a hat ghost?
She could use the Minis from Mario vs DK. The ideas are all in her support thread.

Incineroar will be the Gen VII representative.
I have high hopes, but I'm prepared for disappointment just in case. :V

New Gens typically have a starter represent them, with the exception of Brawl and Lucario.
Typically?

We literally only had one case where a Starter was used to represent the Generation (Greninja), and that was by circumstance rather than going out their way to have a Starter.

While I'd say Incineroar's chances are decent, that has nothing to do with it being a Starter.

I'm willing to bet that the FE16 protag is going to be revealed in April or May in a Fire Emblem Direct and that a Gen 8 PKMN is going to be revealed at E3.

I'm pretty sure that picture is just a fan interpretation of who the silhouettes could be and what it could look like. DK's pointed hair doesn't match the trailer's at all.

I think you mean it doesn't have everything to do with being a starter.

Starters are naturally predisposed to promotion and likelier to accrue popularity than your average mon, which puts them at an intrinsic advantage as far as desirable Smash qualities go.

I'm surprised so many people think Smash for Switch will be an entirely new game. It feels far too soon after the release of Smash 4. I know the title is still in the works, but that's probably because they don't need to say "Smash for Switch" like they did for Wii U and 3DS because there aren't multiple platforms this will be released on that could cause buying confusion. If it were a brand new entry does it really make sense that they have been working on it all this time without giving it a proper name, and start to tease it to the public without having decided on one when the game is slated to release in less than 10 months? It's more likely that they want to build hype by generating speculation, then to instead suggest to players it's mostly a straight up port and disappoint them right out the gate. Better to slap a new name on the same base game with new graphics, characters, stages, modes and the like enough that people can consider it mostly new.

And if you look, yeah sure it's BotW Link, but Mario looks the same, no Cappy from Odyssey, it wouldn't make sense for their flagship character to not be updated as well to reflect his Switch incarnation. The same is true for Zelda, she's still her Twilight Princess version from the trailer screenwriter I've seen. More likely than not BotW Link is just a slightly modified standalone clone like Lucina is to Martha, keep in mind all the Links are from different timelines and are technically separate characters.

Also, the game releases this year, which only has 9 months left. People already forget that with Smash for Wii U/3DS, Nintendo started building up hype well over a year in advance of launch, with small teases and character information tidbits leading up until launch proper over a year later. No such deliberate fanfare here it seems, they don't even have the name nailed down and it releases soon.

Just looking at the poll I think there's a lot if wishful thinking going on is all, I think it's more realistin that Nintendo is making a really great definitive port with tons of new bells and whistles than making a whole new game.

I'm guessing Smash started development in February 2016. Sakurai said his next job had already been decided soon before finishing development on DLC. https://sourcegaming.info/2016/01/06/famitsu-news-sakurai-catching-a-breather/

That's more or less the same amount of time spent on Smash for 3DS and Wii U, and if they could make two games within that time period imagine how much they could add into one single game in that same amount of time.

Anyone here speak German?
It doesn't say anything interesting, but paraphrasing:
Fans of Smash have a good reason to be happy: the newest installment of the series releases in 2018 for Switch. In the announcement trailer were a lot of familiar faces, like Mario, Link and the Inklings from Splatoon.

Edit: :4greninja:'d by my fellow Dutchman.

He most likely took a break from February through May/June that year. Which I guess is still substantial time for a break.

Although with his recent Famitsu columns it makes me curious if there's going to be a X2 character in the next Smash or not because Sakurai only played the game this past holiday season. My guess is yes but who's to say.
For the love of God, I'm sick of Fire Emblem. We need to cut a character if we get another one.
The feeling is mutual but I think t's inevitable. Everything is aligning too much for it not to happen.

Although I do feel a character or two is getting cut from the FE roster currently.

I don't speak German but that's more or less what we already know just by skimming it.

Lucina, Roy, and maybe Corrin are going to be cut for the next Smash game, no doubt about that.

Lucina was just a whim that Sakurai had the time to make.

Roy feels like a character that will always be a DLC character.

Corrin was mostly put in to promote Fates, and with FE16 on the horizon and Echoes still fresh in the minds of FE fans, I doubt they'll come back to promote fates again.

Personally I think this Smash's new "retro" character could be Stanley from Donkey Kong 3, considering so far there's no retro fighter that represents Nintendo's arcade lineup.

You hit my nail right on the head there with my idea of a "Smash 4.5/4.8" I previously proposed. Kudos to you, friend.
I don't think Stanley can make it in, seeing as his main weapon is already represented by Mr. Game & Watch"s Jab 1 and Jab finisher.

What do you guys think of the guesses that the veterans are facing the fire rather than the Inklings? I'm also curious as to why the Inkling Boy spawned next the Inkling Girl after the Smash Logo was revealed (you can barely see his legs make an attempt to walk up to her). I would have preferred to see his body or Squid-form pop out of the ink for a brief second to question why the Inkling Girl stopped running and then decided to join her in viewing the Smash logo or whatever caught her attention.

BTW, how many of you consistently play Sm4sh? I stopped after probably a year and a half. I'm kinda wondering why I stopped playing. I played Melee for years. I played Brawl for years. But I don't think it's because I didn't like the new Smash, and in fact I had a lot of fun with it. But I do think not having a fun single player mode made it less fun if you didn't play with friends.

And also, I think I was so annoyed with the Wii U that it made me want to play Sm4sh less too. Knowing that the console was doomed and a new one was coming soon made me less excited to play, for some reason. Now that I like the Switch, I would be totally fine with having the same Smash game on it.

But at the *very* least, we know we're going to have some new characters, which is cool. I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope I play this one for a lot longer than I did the last one.
Its written in stone. Melee is, a classic. Melee's gameplay may be frustrating but, it gets everything else right while not trying to hard. Melee's soundtrack is a core example. Pure timeless.

Brawl, is no way a classic in any category. Only thing the game succeeds at is trying to be dark.

I feel like it kinda does. It's pretty integral to Mimikyu's concept. In a pinch they could just make it a counter anyway, so it's not like a ton of thought needs to be put into it.
I thought of that also. Mimikyu's disguise ability really does contributes to its uniqueness.

Corrin should stay in, at least he plays different. And Lucina could always be a skin for Marth.
