Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Hi all. It's been a while.

I've recently had the opportunity to play the Smash Bros. Ultimate demo. I've posted my impressions on Twitter but I suppose I could head over here and post them as well.

Without further ado...

1. The game feels much like a spiced-up version of Smash 3DS/Wii U. It's a bit faster paced, flashier and, most importantly, feels like a new game, although similarities to previous Smash Bros. game are obviously inevitable.
2. Ganondorf is amazing. He's got improved speed and his sword Smash attacks are very satisfying to land. The up Smash is slower but has crazy range and power. Of the three new Smash attacks, the down Smash feels the closest to the previous games in frame data and execution.
3. Air dodges still work somewhat similarly to the previous game, but you can't spam them as much regardless if you do a directional air dodge or not,
4. Smash attacks can be charged for much longer. That was one of the big differences I've noticed while playing.
5. Ganondorf is amazing. His up tilt is faster, you know.
6. Snake is definitely one of the most fun characters. I was surprised by his improved speed.
7. If you think the stages look beautiful in screenshots and videos, you haven't seen them in game. They look incredible and only playing the game will really make you appreciate the effort in remaking all the stages in HD.
8. The Smart Bomb item no longer damages yourself if you throw it at someone. This makes it a much safer item to use. Not sure how teammates are affected by this, though.
9. Even if a lot of characters might still feel like how they played in the last game (speed, pacing and balancing adjustments notwithstanding), the new animations and other aesthetic revamps will still make them feel fresh. Mario is a good example of this.
10. Did I mention that Ganondorf felt amazing to play as?
Is it true that recovering with characters is more difficult compared to Smash 4?

Here something fun:

What were you doing/do you remember doing during each Smash trailer.

Brawl: my friend emailed me a link to the video with one word: SNAAAAAAAAKE!!!

Sonic: I forgot

Smash 4: I stayed up to watch it and couldn’t fall asleep due to hype.

Rosalina: Stayed up to watch it next to our Christmas tree.

Little Mac: my wedding anniversary date. I watched it before I left to hand in our marriage documents.

Greninja: I forgot but I remember watching it by myself.

E3 2014: Stayed up to watch it. But my laptop broke half way.

Lucina and Robin: stayed up to watch it and ate pizza

Shulk: watched it with friends who weren’t Smash fans.

Ryu: forgot

Cloud: I had only one class that day to teach in the afternoon so I spent the morning fangasiming. It was like Christmas. And the next day I went to America with my wife to attend my sisters wedding. So I watched it again when I arrived.

Corrin and Bayonetta: watched it in the morning while on my way to work. I stopped at a supermarket parking.

Smash Ultimate Inkling: randomly visited Smashboards to find out I was a mod again. That led me find the trailer.

E3 2018: went to bed at 10 and woke up at 1 to watch it on mute. Didn’t want to wake up the baby.

Smash Ultimate Direct: Watched it in Australia while working as a chaperone for our students study abroad trip. Had crap internet at the hotel and took forever to watch it fully. K Rool was spoiled for me on this thread after I went in safari intending to search on how to make internet in Australia go faster. But opening Safari made this thread popped up and the first thing I saw was “KING K ROOOL!”

9/7/2018: we never did see it but it was scheduled for 7 am here. Plus, I had an office day so basically I could spend some of my day speculating and hyping with the rest of you. Was planning to watch it in the office lobby while drinking some coffee and eating a doughnut.
For every single reveal I've had my brother by my side, so I've always had the privilege of having someone to react with, it's been great.

Brawl: Stumbled upon it on Youtube some time after it had gone up, I had been out of touch with Nintendo games for a while, so I was surprised another Smash was even happening. I was incredibly excited for Wario, and oddly enough Meta Knight, who I didn't actually know before then, but something about his design and him having a cool warship really got me hype. His appearance there is what got me into Kirby shortly after, and then into Smash speculation.

Sonic: The Brawl Dojo usually updated while I was at school, so I had just gotten home to see the news, and was incredibly bummed. I was one of those who really didn't want Sonic as I couldn't grasp the significance of him getting in at the time, something which I've long since realized of course.

Smash 4: I had been gearing up for it for a long time at that point, I couldn't concentrate at school at all despite it being in the last month of that particular education. The only thing I accomplished that day was drawing Ridley.

Rosalina: I think this was really late in Europe, like 1AM. It caught me by surprise, it had been so long since we got any Smash news that I didn't really think we'd get it there. Initially I thought it was going to be a trailer for Kirby in Mario Kart 8 lol. My internet also died halfway through the trailer.

Little Mac: Really can't remember this one.

Greninja: I had taken the whole day off of everything, like with the Smash 4 reveal nothing was going to disturb my Smash Direct day, I think I even stayed home from school. As you can imagine my mood quickly turned very very sour with the Ridley boss tease.

E3 2014: Was still in a downer mood in regards to Smash 4 over the Ridley debacle, and Mii and Palutena did nothing for me. Later I remember waking up in the middle of the night for no real reason and going on my phone, something I otherwise never do at that time, to find out that Pac-Man had been revealed. Was still bummed out and fell asleep again.

Lucina and Robin: Can only remember the anti-Gematsu hype afterwards.

Shulk: Didn't watch the Japan-only Direct as I figured nothing would be revealed, and I was a believer in the ESRB leak anyways, so didn't care.

Smash 4 DLC: Can't remember any of them tbh, I think at that point I just didn't care too much about reveals anymore as I wasn't part of Smash speculation anymore, so they haven't left any lasting memories on me.

Smash Ultimate + Inkling: Happened around midnight iirc, so I was pretty tired. I was super chuffed with the Crash NST port announcement, but of course Smash made it.

E3 2018: I was stressing really badly on the day, the Ridley rumors made it a do or die moment for him in my mind, so I really couldn't take my mind off of it. The most productive I was at school that day was once again drawing the big guy, and once I got home I did nothing but listen to Metroid music and play tunes from the series on guitar, I only had one thing on my mind. I'm probably going to write an entire post about my experience with the presentation itself one day.

Smash Ultimate Direct: For once I was actually relaxed, one because Ridley was now in, but two because I didn't actually have that high expectations. Blew me away.

If it happens while your power is out, I promise not to spoil anything to you.

Can't say the same for everyone else though, but still, I'll be honorable :V
Thanks! But honestly after the storm I'll be okay with any morsel of news, spoiled direct or not.

I just need to know how wrong my crackpot theories end up being

I remember the Smash Switch reveal so well. I swear it has to be one of the best surprise gaming announcements of all time.
Being told it would come out in 2018 threw me completely. That was the craziest part for sure lol.

This is coming from a life long smash fan who always expects years and years to pass from first announcment and official release. Actually this game is kind of like the new Melee in a lot of ways...

To be honest...Etika may probably not be a Nintendo fan.

No offense, but I keep hearing rumors that Etika is actually not a Nintendo fan, nor does he knows the characters. Rumor has it he gets paid to do reaction videos.
He cried playing XB2. So I dunno.

Maan, this keeps making me hope Finland might receive Smash Ultimate-demo through GameXpo around November. But so far have to yet see anything on that, so I doubt it.

Gah, being an European is suffering. :sadsheep:

If Nintendo has an official presence at that event, you might get lucky. Here's hoping you get a chance to try it out.

But yeah, Europe doesn't get as many big events, but I was pleasantly surprised that Comic-Con Portugal had the Smash Bros. Ultimate demo (the same as the E3 demo btw). 6 booths with 4 controllers each and there wasn't a lot of people and no lines at all. Some people, me included, played a lot of matches.

It's not so bad generally being a European in this regard, Germany, France and Spain have all had demos, it's more that we Scandinavians never get them.

Greninja: watched it live with my brother.

E3 2014: think I watched it live, can't remember

Robin and Lucina: watched it live in the middle of my living room, it was still morning and I was screaming over Robin and my father and grandmother looked worried at me.

Shulk: "Shulk was just confirmed" "yeah I knew that weeks ago thank ESRB"

Corrin and Bayo: watched it live but my stream froze before it started without me realizing it so when I refreshed it the first thing I saw was Corrin countering

Ultimate Announcement: watched the Direct live in my apartment.

E3 2018: also live at my apartment. I was supposed to be working on my assignments tho.

Smash Direct: didn't catch it live as I had to leave JUST as it was going to start but I managed to get to the video on Nintendo's channel later that afternoon without getting spoiled. I then watched it on the floor outside the room where I was going to have my class.

Delayed Nintendo Direct: was going to watch it live back at home but of time and day of week are the same, I'll watch it live by myself in my apartment.

You're welcome. I'm happy to share my experience with the game. I'm looking forward to the release in December even more!

I've also tried various other characters. To elaborate:
1. Pokémon Trainer - Fast switching time and being able to do so in mid-air really adds a different feel to this character. Charizard is quite similar to the previous game. Rock Smash has been removed and people who played as him a lot in the last game definitely need to get used to that.
2. Ivysaur's Bullet Seed has been improved with the addition of a finishing hit like multi-hit jabs.
3. The Ice Climbers don't feel all that different from their last appearance in Brawl. It's been a while since I played as them but they're essentially as I remember them.
4. Mewtwo is very similar to his Smash 3DS/Wii U appearance but he definitely feels stronger than before. I really liked playing as him in Ultimate.
5. Marth's improved side special is a blessing and he overall remains fun to play as. He definitely felt more agile.

They've had it multiple times in the UK. At an event in London I got to try out about 15 of the characters, and that was on top of doing a full Mario Tennis bracket and MK8DX time trial runs.

Tell me about it

We never get invited to the cool stuff...
Yeah, at times it has me feel either Nintendo of Europe is very incompetent on their handling of Nintendo-related marketing and promotion... or Nintendo of Japan just prioritizes USA out of preference, and isn't bothering to develop better bonds or connections with NoE...

But again, it might just be Finland being completely dopey with it's Nintendo-related stuff in general. I mean, there's no Hot Topic here or anything.

If Nintendo has an official presence at that event, you might get lucky. Here's hoping you get a chance to try it out.
I kind of doubt it, so far nothing about Nintendo being part of it. It's hella small convention compared to ones in US, from what I've seen. But thanks for wishing luck anyway. Maybe things might turn around.

Neat! Which of the characters felt refreshing aside from Dorf? A lot of the videos are really making me itch to explore these reworked fellas...

I haven't talked about Isabelle here much lately, but I always thought she was a pretty popular choice. However, I guess she isn't all that popular since her thread on here isn't getting many replies. I dunno, I just thought she was really popular since she got a Mii costume

Brawl: I can't exactly remember, I probably stumbled on it online alongside trailers for a billion other upcoming Wii and DS games back in 2006. I burned a DVD with all those trailers (that's how you know it was 2006) and watched it over and over

Sonic: Oct 10 2007. I enter the Dojo and YESSSSSSS!!!!!! YESSSSSSS!!!! I watched the trailer probably 2x more than the 2006 one

3DS/Wii U/E3 2013: wasn't able to watch it live since I was on school so I knew most info beforehand, but was still really hyping. Too bad none of my classmates cared about Nintendo :(

Rosalina: same thing, I was on class, but I remember her splash art leaking on the beginning of the Direct. I was SO HYPED she was my #1 wanted newcomer, upon watching the trailer I almost cried

Little Mac: watched it live, regular stuff

Greninja: watched it live, was surprised a lot, and yes, I thought it was Mewtwo

E3 2014: was able to catch Palutena's reveal live after lunch, prior to that I was following news on Twitter. I was on classroom waiting for a mock exam to start so I had to quietly express hype haha

Robin: oh boy, watched it live and had the most extra reactions EVER since I never expected Robin to get in, regardless of how much I wanted him

Shulk: was able to catch the trailer in between classes. He was already leaked, but he was my #2 most wanted, so it was still awesome

Ryu: too bad he was leaked, I watched it live right before a bus ride

Cloud: watched it live, and my reaction was as negative it can get back then

Corrin/Bayo: live, like Robin I had pretty extra reactions during Bayo

Ultimate reveal: watched live on a TV, was awesome

E3 2018: right before a test, watched live on a TV, me totally hyped while my roommate was understanding nothing

August Direct: live on a TV too, was fun

Next Direct: for its original date I considered speeding back from therapy to not miss it live. Now I see that's not much of a good idea (I'd still miss a good chunk), so I'm seeing the possibility of rescheduling therapy this week, if the Sep 13 rumors are real. If not, I might not watch it live

Yes.
I can't remember any Smash reveal as something special since I'm always watching the Directs specting something as I'm specting now the next. Sonic was awesome, Megaman was awesome, K. Rool was awesome... But I was waiting for Smash news.
But Ultimate reveal... I'll never forget it. No joking, I just come back from my grandma's funeral, I was broken so I catch the Direct just for distraction. After some days of suffering it was something special.

That definitely doesn't help knowing.

Ah well, at least it's more or less 3 months from now. So I can bit handle that wait.

Holy **** you're back, it's been a while.
Tell me about Ganoncide then, is it easy to mash out of it? I'm worried it might not be as viable as before.

I don't need him playable, but give me a cameo.

I like Etika but his reactions are way to over dramatic. All he does is yell the characters name over and over again with the occasional "This can't be happening" "No one saw this coming" "my boy" or "baby girl".

Etika is fine as a streamer and in making rumor videos but when it comes to his reactions, especially smash, and his drama with other youtubers, it's made me not a fan of his.
I only know him from his reaction videos and that clickbait Ridley one he made. I dont really watch the guy

What drama does he have? He always seemed like a drama free guy to me.

Hi there!

And yes, I'm back. All the Smash Ultimate hype got me back to this place. What's up?

As for your question, I'm afraid I cannot answer. I didn't do any Ganoncides.

However, Ridleycides on walk-off stages are definitely a thing. I did one of those. lol

So we've got a rumor for a direct for the 13th. The site is in English, so its probably Western 13th; Japan 14th...which means we're back to a Thursday direct again. Hopefully we'll get some kind of announcement either later today or tomorrow. If it was an exact week later, chances are the announcement will mirror the same time as the first.

I kinda wish other systems or genres could do their own version of Smash Brothers without totally crapping the bed like Sony did. I bought PASBR hoping it would be good, but that stupid battle system where a Special was the only way to get e KO was ridiculously stupid. I use to juggle and beat the ever loving garbage out of people with Heihachi, but if you whiff on a special, you had to build up the meter all over again! It sucked! What a waste of potential....

Jump has a good thing going with their whole anime-themed fighter too, but the mechanics just seem wonky to other fights. I understand wanting it to be more of an arena fighter, but couldn't you mimic another long running, popular fighter you have? Like Ninja Storm, if you're not going to to a Smash style battle?

Well...rant aside...let's play a game. Create a new Smash Brothers-inspired Game with the following rules:
*20 Characters Max
*Smash Brothers Battle Style
*Summoning Optional (Pokeball/Assist Trophies)
*Themes can be: Sony, Microsoft, Sega, Anime, Specific Game series (like Final Fantasy, Wild Arms, or Tales Of...), Comics, or Movies (Non-Superhero)
*A max of 3 'Guest' characters outside your chosen Theme allowed

Just to throw out a quick idea/example, here's a Final Fantasy themed one
1) Cloud
2) Tifa
3) Sephiroth
4) Terra
5) Locke
6) Celes
7) Kefka
8) Squall
9) Rinoa
10) Seifer
11) Ultimecia
12) Zidane
13) Garnet
14) Vivi
15) Kuja
16) Barret (too lazy to edit all the numbers since I forgot him lol)
17) Gilgamesh
18) (Dragon Quest Guest) Erdrick
19) (Tales of... Guest) Yuri Lowell
20) (Persona Guest) Joker
A Sonic fighting game:
1. Sonic
2. Tails
3. Knuckles
4. Amy
5. Shadow
6. Rouge
7. Omega
8. Silver
9. Blaze
10. Cream
11. Eggman
12. Espio
13. Charmy
14. Vector
15. Big
16. Gamma
17. Chaos
18. Tikal
19. Classic Sonic
20. NiGHTS (guest)

Brawl: watched it online at my father's work computers, loved it a lot

Sonic: we watched the name and a bit of the render in the school library computers before being kicked out, then watched it complete back at home and was just giddy and jumping all around

Smash 4: went to a friend's house to watch it, I think? And then knew about wii fit trainer back at my home, was pretty nice

Rosalina: was watching the direct at my home as usual, got rosalina spoiled in 4chan as they found the url and uploaded everything

Little Mac: was pretty hyped watching the direct as the devs of Punch Out!! retweeted the direct, loved it a lot

Greninja: I think I was watching it while talking with a friend via skype, at first thought it was mewtwo haha

E3 2014: watched it while I was supposed to be studying for some important exams, and then stayed up for the invitational and Pac-Man

Lucina and Robin: probably watched it back home alone, it was pretty fine

Shulk: learned about it when I woke up and checked my phone, knew about it from ESRB tho

Ryu: I knew already because of the leaks, watched the direct in home

Cloud: I think I was at skype with my friend again, it was pretty hype

Corrin and Bayo: the same, it was super hype watching Bayo tho

Smash Ultimate Inkling: nice surprise, I don't remember if I was at discord or anything, I think I was

E3 2018: watched it with friends via discord

Smash Ultimate Direct: watched it with a friend in a gaming bar

September 7 2018: was going to watch it in the bus with my girlfriend while travelling to our holidays, this time I guess I'll just watch it back home

Brawl: Got me into Nintendo and gaming as a whole. Probably my most watched. Didn't like Snake until I played his games
Snake Special Trailer: Awesome.
Sonic: Sadly my respect for the series was at a low during this time
Smash 4: Awesome!
Rosalina: Wasn't too invested, not hating.
Little Mac: Hype!
Greninja: Cool trailer, isn't my favorite Pokemon but whatever
E3 2014: Awesome!
Lucina and Robin: I was hype for Robin, was not expecting Chrom to be so bullied :b
Shulk: Great, I gotta get started on Xenoblade now. Curse you cute British Accents!
Ryu: Hype, but honestly the trailer wasn't that hype. Ryu's theme in Smash has such a slow tempo to make for awesome trailer music
Cloud: Wolf? Wait.. that music!? WTF?
Corrin and Bayonetta: Internet cut out. I didn't need more FE, but I do find both Corrins cute. Bayonetta was a big wtf though.
Smash Ultimate Inkling: NICE!
E3 2018: WTF RIDLEY!? IT HAPPENED
Smash Ultimate Direct: Simon was expected, tbh I worked this one at work and had to resist the temptation to make noise when Richter popped out of no where and K Rool got a trailer.

Speaking of Ridley. I really didn't find him to be anything so special. Haven't played as him all that much but he felt like Charizard 2.0 in many regards, especially the overall kind of moves he has, the similar body types, similar aerial mobility with him being a heavyweight with multiple jumps.

Of the two new characters in the demo, Inkling was definitely my favorite pick.

Shame. Was hoping for some juicy gossip on mid-development tweaks :D Did you play Samus?
Just once! She didn't feel that much different from before but being able to charge the neutral special in mid-air was long overdue.

I'm maining him so ****ing hard hmmm...
Don't quote me on this, but I think you can do Ridleycides in mid-air just like Ganon. I didn't try this out, though.

I haven't talked about Isabelle here much lately, but I always thought she was a pretty popular choice. However, I guess she isn't all that popular since her thread on here isn't getting many replies. I dunno, I just thought she was really popular since she got a Mii costume
If the number of thread replies dictate how popular a character is, then Daisy is one of the most popular characters on Smashboards.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just because Isabelle's thread isn't always active doesn't mean the support doesn't exist.
