Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Hummm... How about Top 10 Most Anticipated Games for 2019? It's not directly Smash-related, but it'll hopefully kill the fire.
Star Fox game
Bayonetta 3
Animal Crossing
Xenoblade Chronicles X for Switch
Metroid Prime 4
New 3D Sonic game It'll be good this time
Gen 8 Pokémon game
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Kingdom Hearts 3
Okami 2... Let me dream dang it:(

Here's a game for you fellas and felletes.

Pick a new third party from each company... But pick someone who has not seen a noteable amount of support. As in, not seen much on polls, barely EVER talked about, and stuff like that. Dig deep.

For the sake of consistency, they have to have been on a Nintendo platform in some capacity.

SEGA: Gemini Sunrise (Sakura Wars)
Capcom: Harp Note (Mega Man Starforce)
Namco: Mappy/Valkyrie
Konami: A Dance Dance Revolution rep
Square Enix: Marche (FF Tactics Advance)
SEGA: Sakura Shinguji[ (Sakura wars)
Capcom: Amaterasu (Okami)
Namco: Valkyrie (Valkyrie no Densetsu)
Konami: Yugo Ogami (Bloody Roar)
Square Enix: Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Milk? Coffee is better than milk.
But Coffee with Milk is the best :) Anyone got the reference?

I'm not buying it honestly. Too many 3rd parties in this one and I think at least 5-8 new 3rd parties would fit. So far we got two with Simon and Richter. There's other possibilities of Ken, Rayman, Banjo, Shadow, Crash, and more being considered
Also, the leak listed Monolith Soft among the third party companies. Nintendo bought out Monolith Soft in 2012.

Here's an idea similar to the "12/26 Man Roster Game":

Who here knows the fan game Super Smash Land, the GameBoy styled demake of Smash Bros. that features :ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu::ultmegaman: and :134:? Whether or not you might know where I'm going with this, here's the game:

Make a hypothetical roster for a DS Smash Bros. game. The limitations for this are:
1. The roster must be comprised of 16 characters.
2. The cast must be made of characters who debuted in 2005 or earlier. (For example, no 4th generation Pokémon)
3. You must consider system limitations, meaning that certain mechanics cannot work, such as transforming/swapping characters, Pikmin always following Olimar, and having Nana alongside Popo.
4. Each franchise is limited to 3 representatives at maximum. (DK, Yoshi and Wario are separate from Mario)
5. Only 1 3rd Party character is allowed on the roster. It's completely optional, though.
6. History of characters in Smash doesn't apply, so you can replace Pichu with a different Johto Pokémon for all I care, or exclude DK and Fox, knock yourselves out. However, the roster is required to have :ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu:NO MATTER WHAT.

Now with that all said and done, have fun. I will be making my roster later, as I have a class starting in a few minutes.
16? Super tough my friend.

:ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu::ultdk::ultyoshi::ultsamus::ultfox:
:ultpeach::ultzelda::ultroy::ultwario::ultmetaknight::ultdiddy:
+ Blaziken and Isaac

Original 8 would stay not just because of their status, but they are just genuinely a great portfolio of Nintendo characters.

Zelda would lose Sheik because of limitations. I went with Roy over Marth because he'd have been more recent at the time, and Fire Emblem's home was handhelds at that point in history.

Wario, Diddy and Meta Knight just because they felt inevitable back in 2005.

Blaziken as the recent Pokémon rep, and Isaac because of Golden Sun being a relatively popular handheld series at the time.

CRACK THEORY TIME

Laura Kate Dale had this to say about why the Direct was delayed:
Okay, hows this for a thing, after that direct airs, there will be a game that will be pretty clear is the reason for the delay, you'll know it when you see it. Come back to me post direct, I'll have more on that game.
Alongside being a logistical and marketing nightmare, there is a game within the Direct that played a part in the delay. Think about times other Nintendo media has been delayed/canceled. Specifically, lets consider the examples of the 2 episode special of the Pokemon Black and White anime, Team Rocket vs. Team Plasma, and an episode from the Advanced Generation anime, Shaking Island Battle! Barboach vs. Wishcash!!. Both of these episodes involved earthquakes or mass destruction, and were canceled due to other similar disasters that took place within Japan at the time (the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake and the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami alongside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster respectively).

Now, there is the possibility that this game has nothing to do with Smash Bros. For all we know it could be Daemon x Machina, a port of Xenoblade Chronicles X or the Wonderful 101, Pokemon Let's Go, a third party title, the list could go on. However, for the sake of this theory we'll assume that the game is Smash Brothers. If a game is one of the main reasons the Direct was delayed, it's likely because the trailer for it featured an earthquake or mass destruction of some sort. Lets think about characters who could feature things like that in their trailer.

My mind jumps to Isaac and Skull Kid. Isaac is primarily known for his psynergy abilities, which include geomancy, or movement of the earth. His moveset would likely involve shifting or moving the earth, and if we assume that his Final Smash is Judgement, the ultimate summon of his game, the mass destruction shown within it would definitely be in poor taste. Skull Kid because his trailer could possibly have the moon destroying Clock Town, or that could be his Final Smash, which again, the mass destruction shown within it would be in poor taste.

All this being said, I definitely support the decision to delay the Nintendo Direct. I can understand that we're disappointed, because I am too. I was really looking forward to this, but I understand why they did it, as they ought to be focusing on rebuilding alongside supporting any efforts to help those in need. I'm sure if something similar happened in the country you lived in, you wouldn't appreciate it if Nintendo showed footage depicting a similar tragedy for marketing purposes. My heart goes out to all of those effected. I wish that I could do more, but for now I hope that suffices.

What you guys think:
http://boards.4chan.org/v/thread/430567012

First I want to make it clear that I do not care if you believe it or not, or if you're going to talk all kinds of nonsense here. I also know that many false leaks are coming, and that these leaks can get lost, but whatever.

The idea of the word "Ultimate" also comes from the fact that we will have many characters from outside of Nintendo.
We are going to have a new trailer "Everyone is here", but with the new characters from outside Nintendo.

I will not tell you who the characters are, because I do not want problems and I do not want to spoil your joy.

We will have 2 characters for each company, this will mix Echos as well.
Some of them will have only one character.

Square Enix, Capcom, Arc System Works, Namco Bandai, Atlus, Konami, SEGA, Blizzard, Ubisoft, From Software, Bethesda, Platinum, BioWare, MonolithSoft, Activision, Naugthy Dog, Rockstar, Valve, SNK, Netherrealm and EA.

Both Microsoft and Sony have given special permission to certain characters.
The game will be treated as a celebration of the history of Video Games.

You can believe it or not.
December is the date.
I never thought I would actually agree with 4chan on something. Stopped reading after "I do not care if you believe it or not".

How about let's go back to something like Melee, where it was actually fun unlocking characters.
At the start: :ultmario::ultlink::ultkirby::ultpikachu:

12 characters to unlock in a new Story Mode: :ultyoshi::ultfox::ultganondorf::ultsamus::ultsimon::ultpit::ultrob::ultmarth::ultlittlemac::ultryu::ultsonic::ultsnake:

13th, one week exactly from now.

Yeah, it's kind of odd so it may be a mistake, but that's what it says at the moment.
This is just an error. I still see September 7 for me.

I wouldn't say that exactly; you had some support, however meager. It didn't quite help that you used certain terms, but I for one appreciated the info and backed you up on it.

Not sure what you mean by "certain terms", I was pretty clear.

But if the Japanese Direct says the date is the 13th, would that mean the Direct is on the 12th for us?

Really though, surely this Direct has to be at the weekend considering Famitsu is coming out on Monday. Nintendo can hardly ask Famitsu to remove all their pages on Direct content, 4 days before publication. Unless Famitsu is delayed, I think the Direct has to be before Monday, right?
The only time I can remember a gaming company having to take action from Famitsu was back when Dragon Quest IX was delayed, but even then they still released the issue at a special discount.

Namco: I'd feel bad if I said KOS-MOS for the millionth time, so... Shion instead (Xenosaga)
Konami: Frogger
Square Enix: I'll be real honest, I don't know like anything about SE, so I'm going with a Slime riding a Chocobo

A full week, huh? Not too bad. I just wish time would fly by a bit faster so it wouldn't be feel as long.

Assuming the Direct had occured today as normal and it did indeed have a reveal or two for Smash Brothers Ultimate, is it enough of a pattern to say we can be confident that info arrives in the first week of each month for Smash? So that we can expect the next reveal the first week of October, then November? The first week of December is the release itself, so I've been under the impression we'll know everything by November as it is.

You missed the part where there's only 1 3rd party character allowed lol

I'm wanting at least 50% or more of the roster to be unlocked as I like to unlock characters. Pretty much why I'm loving how they are doing it with Ultimate now

Okay! This is generally confusing! The other directs have been postponed! But I go to the Nintendo Japan Youtube page that says the direct will be held on the 7th/6th (Given that it says it will go live in 3 hours)! Can somebody help me out with this?

It was PM, but it wasn't Nintendo, sorry.
I hope it isn't at 5:30 PM as I'll likely be busy.

Nintendo Japan's youtube page still says its starting in 3 hours, so I wonder what'll happen when the countdown ends.
Someone has to manually do it. So it likely won't happen.

I'm betting now that every character that's placed within the Dengeki Top 10 will be in Smash Bros, whether through the base roster or as DLC. Japanese fan demand is a big deal, and it seems that most, if not every character who's placed has worldwide support. The list of characters is:
The top 5 from the last poll who were excluded (These guys are practically locks as far as I'm concerned):
  • Isaac
  • Sora
  • K. Rool
  • Chrom
  • Arle Nadja
And the top 10 from the most recent poll:
  • Skull Kid
  • Bandana Dee
  • Lloyd Irving
  • Banjo & Kazooie
  • Paper Mario
  • Rex & Pyra
  • Magalor
  • Spring Man
  • Geno
  • Dixie Kong
Of course, this likely wouldn't be everything, as I'd expect some oddball picks like Dante or (hopefully) Joker/Yu Narukami, but what would guys think if these were all of the unique newcomers for the game (in the base roster and as DLC)

For me? It's nearly perfect. Add Joker/Yu Narukami and it is perfect in my book.

This so much, Famitsu probably has already finished their new issue containing everything that would've been announced at the Direct, and there's no way in existence they would want to rewrite everything from the start just to not spoil a few videogame reveals that we probably already had guessed they would be featured.

Going to say it again. Next weeks direct will have one unique character and two echos. Then, it will end with the date of the next smash direct being mid november.

This direct should have little smash info outside selling online features, like leader boards, tournaments, splat-smash fests.

I suspect the character is Issac or bandana dee with the clones being shadow and felix or ken.

Then the november direct will give is the remaining two newcomers, being llyod and geno. Final echos will also be listed. That direct will also start outlining dlc for smash through next year, with online subscription playing a role in goodies.

Bet it will be smash season passes.
