Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The winner was Marshadow, because we all love shadowboxing. Komoo-o was decently popular and so was Sallazle. It seems not many are keen on Zeraora just yet.

Next up are the Ultra Beasts and we are finally done with ALL Pokemon for a long time. Your picks are Buzzwole, Pheramosa, Nihilego, and the newly introduced Blacephalon.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

Good luck.

I still have no idea how Andross can be feasible in Smash, it's the same issue as Ridley. There are several Star Fox characters who can be feasible, BUT only two have potential for a unique moveset, and Slippy is even more hated than Krystal

Anyway, here's my 10 most wanted Newcomers for Smash 5 that are possible, and are eligible for Smash

10). Alexandria Rovias- Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2002), Gamecube.

9). King K Rool- Donkey Kong Country (1994), SNES (Smash needs more baddies)

8). Doomguy/Doom Marine-DOOM (1993), SNES (This may be a bit of an oddball choice but let me explain. It would promote DOOM on the Switch, DOOM is a very well known and famous game, most people do know what DOOM is or have heard of it. Plus since DOOM is on the Switch, I am not sure that Bethesda will refuse. I know DOOM isn't that popular in Japan, but we got Sonic, and Sonic isn't that popular in Japan either, and the violence is an issue, but if Sakurai can tone down Snake, he can tone down Doomguy)

7). Impa- Legend of Zelda (1986), NES

6). Banjo & Kazooie, Banjo-Kazooie (1998), N64

5). Sylux- Metroid Prime Hunters (2006)- DS (He's more feasible then Ridley will ever be, whether the fanboys like it or not)

4). Leon Kennedy- Resident Evil 4 in the West/ Biohazard 4 in Japan (2005), Gamecube,( I know Leon technically originated in Resident Evil 2, but Resident Evil 4 was at one point a Gamecube exclusive, and is a well known franchise)

3). Shovel Knight- Shovel Knight (2014), Wii U.

2). Inklings- Splatoon (2015), Wii U.

1). Krystal- Star Fox: Adventures (2002), Gamecube
Sonic isn't popular in Japan? Isn't this the same country where Tingle has a huge fanbase?
Also, I thought Krystal was hated by fans. I don't see why, but I haven't played any game with her in it, so I can't comment.

The thing is that Sonic was designed specifically for a Western audience, and her hatebase is a very vocal minority, she has been a popular request for Smash since before the release of Brawl,

I made a fantastic "ideal" roster of one hundred characters. I don't necessarily consider these characters plausible or optimal (like Ninten). It's just my ideal roster. If you have any comments, please don't complain about what IP a character is or what IPs do and don't have newcomers. I only added the characters that I think would work, with some personal exceptions. So if I don't think there are any Metroid newcomers that would work, that's why there aren't any.

Ideal Roster of 100 Characters!!! + 4 Mii Fighters & Tabuu + 5 Clones

Character Concepts:
Dixie Kong appears as a semi-clone of Diddy Kong. But, she has many unique abilities.

Unique Abilities: Gumball Gun, Hair Twirl.

Final Smash: Guitar

Pauline's design is inspired by Donkey Kong on Gameboy and her dress is torn like in her arcade artwork and one of her straps is hanging off.

Potential abilities: Super Hammer, Mini-Pauline Toys, Oil Drum, Spring, Parasol, Key, Trash Can, Ladder (DKGB).

Final Smash: New Donk City Festival.

Baby Mario dawns a cape in his appearance.

Potential Abilities: Cape, Parachute, Squeaky Hammer, Toys, Chain Chomp, Magnet, Bubble.

Final Smash: Baby Team.

Andross appears in his "humanoid" form from Star Fox 2 & Star Fox Zero. He doesn't have any arms so he still functions with his proper abilities. One of his abilities (and his stage entrance) is the inter dimensional cube from Star Fox and Star Fox 2.

Potential Abilities: Telekinesis, Metal Panels (can build anything), Scepter, Black Holes, Magnetic Laser (used for pulling opponents toward him), Become Metallic, Ghostly Aurora, Plasma Rings, Light-Speed Warp, Inter dimensional Cube, Darkness, Cosmic Powers.

Final Smash: Summons black hole, pulls in opponents to another dimension, becomes Giant Head Andross, sucks up opponents, chews them, spits them back out.

Samurai Goroh is very slightly a semi-clone of Captain Falcon. Even less so than Luigi. Though he shares the same special abilties and Final Smash. Most all of his non special abilities are a unique mixture of brute strength and his stingray katana.

Final Smash: Fire Stingray

Ninten appears with minor differences from Ness. Ness is his Falco and Lucas is his Wolf. I don't actually consider Ninten a plausible or even sensical addition. I just love him the most of all the Mother protagonists so it's a shame he's the only one absent. But, obvious why.

Differences from Ness & Lucas:
  • Down Special is PSI Vacuum
  • Side Special is PSI Beam
  • Neutral Special is Rising PK Flash
  • Side Smash is Boomerang
  • Ness's Final Smash is PSI Rockin
  • Lucas's Final Smash is PK Love

Ninten's Final Smash: 4th-D Slip

Differences from Princess Peach: Crazee Dayzee (Toad), Carrots (Turnips).

Final Smash: Flower Blossom

Waluigi's move set is ENTIRELY original. Though he uses his Tennis racket briefly in his neutral attack, all of his moves are original to Super Smash Bros, inspired by his wacky and devious personality, just as Wario's were.

Balloon Fighter is kind of like a reverse Little Mac. He is a supreme aerial fighter who is mostly helpless on the ground. His balloons make recovery (especially after being launched) much easier.

Balloon Fighter can have three balloons. After taking significant damage, a balloon will pop. With his Nuetral B Special, Balloon Fighter can use his balloon pump to make more balloons. If he already has three, the next balloon he pumps will pop, making it an attack.

If Balloon Fighter's arms get tired from flapping, he can sacrifice his balloons by over inflating them until they pop as a final recovery. He will then descend by parachute.

Potential Abilities: Balloon Pump, Flippers, Sparks and Static, Air Pump (like Stanley). His swimming animation is him trying to avoid the fish. Instead of drowning, the fish will eat him and take him to the bottom of the ocean.

Final Smash: Bonus Stage (Balloons can Star KO)

Donkey Kong Jr. is a clone of Donkey Kong. He's not as big as DK, but he's bigger than Diddy. He uses his fists a lot more than DK rather than his palms, like in his Spinning Kong move and Hand Slap move.

He also uses a key as his down aerial and can release clap traps as his down tilt.

Final Smash: Donkey Kong Jr. uses a key to break 8-Bit DK out of prison, allowing him to wreak havoc.

Shadow is a Luigi-esque clone of Sonic. He retains his homing attack and spin dash as well as Super Shadow. But, he can teleport with Chaos Control and use Chaos Spear.

Abilities: Chaos Control, Chaos Spear, Chaos Blast.

Final Smash: Super Shadow

I imagine being unpopular in Japan is more of an issue with western third party characters who have had minimal presence there. Sonic may not be very popular in Japan, but that hasn't stopped his games from being released there (though I'm sure much of that has to with the games being made in Japan). As for Doom Guy, to my knowledge, there hasn't been a Doom game officially released in Japan since the '90s.

Actually Doom for Switch is getting a Japanese release, tommorrow (for us in the US) to be exact

Good luck.
There's only one right choice.

I feel like it could be fun to have 3 unique Trainer classes, based upon the proper Swordfighter/Brawler/Gunner. Although Gunner doesn't have some easy options, the other 2 do. Fishing Rod for Swordfighter, and there's literal fighting-based Pokemon Classes that could work. If doing Pokemon summons, they could match the class well. Like Scyther and Gallade could appear for Swordfighter for some moves, and Machamp(or Machoke) and Hitmonchan for Brawler. Oddly enough, there's more Pokemon that would fit Gunner(Remoraid, Octillery, maybe something using Solar Beam for the Final Smash? I can't think of something that's kind of gun-like for Grass Pokemon at the moment. I know there's other water moves like Bubble Beam or Zap Cannon. Plus there's things like Bullet Seed that could work).
That seems to work fine and I really like that idea to show more diversity instead of a hardcore Gen 1 rep. The only question is will they become programmed correctly unlike the Ice Climbers who couldn't make it in the 3DS version?

And the winner was of course the popular Mimikyu, Pikachu would be so proud. The other forms of Lycanroc made it a decently popular choices. Although it seems neither much are interested in fellow Mysticals Tapu Coco nor Magearna.

Next up is the semi-final Gen 7 poll, which includes two recent mystical additions (One being a Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon exclusive). Your picks are Zeraora, Marshadow, Kommo-o, and Salazzle.

Won't be long until the Ultra Beasts.
I'm torn with the Gen 7 choices. Why do you gotta torture me man?

View attachment 137584

Final Smash: Donkey Kong Jr. uses a key to break 8-Bit DK out of prison, allowing him to wreak havoc.

Shadow is a Luigi-esque clone of Sonic. He retains his homing attack and spin dash as well as Super Shadow. But, he can teleport with Chaos Control and use Chaos Spear.

Abilities: Chaos Control, Chaos Spear, Chaos Blast.

Final Smash: Super Shadow

I have one question: Why the flying sausage is Shulk removed?

I like this list, but it's missing some Crash Bandicoot :)

He probably made that before the console was unveiled, the roster is garbage anyway, too many 3rd party characters
I made it last week. The roster is garbage because you want Krystal. There's literally only 20 third party characters out of 110 characters.

But we already know it's called the Switch now.
There's not an official abbreviation from what I'm aware, so I just went with that.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. My mind is somewhere else today.

There's only one right choice.
That should be it's taunt if it makes it in. I love the jiggling muscles.

Good luck.
Errm, I had a really hard time between chosing Buzzwole or Pheramosa. Both really cool fighting arthropods. Buzzwole's design looks better than Pheramosa's, but Pheramosa is fun to use in battle. Buzzwole is if you use it defensively. Buzzwole can be a slow but tanky type, because it's speed is slow. Buzzwole should be a slow but tanky and strong fighter, like Bowser.
23.PNG

Pheramosa on the other hand should be a glass-cannon like Mewtwo.
222.PNG

Pheramos is very frail so it should be light or something. It's weight is also only 55.1 pounds, which is really light. Also that speed is amazing, and it should be strong. It should be like Mewtwo or Little Mac. ( Albeit more like Mewtwo ).

I wanna thank you guys for the unexpected positivity towards my roster. I tried to do my best to do something that could be reasonable, provide some surprises, and hopefully please the fans at the same time. So thanks.

Also, I thought Krystal was hated by fans. I don't see why, but I haven't played any game with her in it, so I can't comment.
Krystal is actually quite popular (partly because of furries). I personally don't like her because she introduces a fantasy element into a heavily sci-fi series. She utilizes magic and psychic powers, which makes her stick out like a sore thumb in a game series that was all about science fiction with none of that stuff.

I'm not against them bringing her back in future Star Fox games, but it'd be better if they could retcon her into a more sci-fi based character in keeping with the actual tone of the games.

20 is too many regardless, Smash is supposed to be a celebration of Nintendo, and to be blunt, while I know Tomb Raider has been released on Nintendo platforms, I fail to see how that franchise has any major historical relevance to Nintendo. Plus you should know Sakurai's rule about realistic firearms, no dual pistols, no Laura Croft, oh and 115 characters is not feasible, Sakurai has had issues with balancing 53 characters, how do you think he will handle 115?! It's not the characters themselves that are absurd, you do have some good ideas, (except Andross, if you put the Andross we see in the games, we run into the Ridley problem. And if we downsize him, it makes him look silly. So Andross is not feasible. But besides Krystal, there are other feasible Star Fox characters that can be added to Smash.), but trim your roster down, and cut some of the 3rd parties.

It's not a rule, just something he wasn't a big fan of. Besides that, "history to Nintendo" is not a requirement at all. Cloud has zero significant history with Nintendo. And he's clearly there to rep FFVII, not FF as a whole. For that matter, Snake's is hardly key to Nintendo either, as he only had some decent ports. He has significant history mainly to Sony at best, and his later better Nintendo games were, oddly enough, not till after Brawl. It's really not as important as you're making it. 3rd parties need to have significance to gaming as a whole, not to Nintendo. That's what makes them important to include. It can overlap, but the only ones that remotely applies to is MegaMan and slightly Ryu, but to a lesser degree.

For a 100 character roster, 20 3rd parties seems pretty reasonable to me. That's not a huge amount overall. Maybe slightly more than one would expect, but it's still not a huge leap from the amount we've had so far. We've had over 60 playable characters in the series(counting Mii Fighters as one, mind you, but the rest as their own otherwise), and 7 so far. At best, maybe it's double what's expected, but since 3rd parties(who so far have been added while being highly known or were voted for) would easily bring in sales, more of them only serves to make the game more popular.

Also, it doesn't really hurt the "celebration of Nintendo" thing at all. That's still significantly bigger than vastly outweighs the 3rd party content by farrr.

I see. I still think a 100 character roster is a bit preposterous, and is not feasible.

Uh, have you ever seen Star Trek, there were empaths and telepaths in Star Trek, and Star Trek is one of the most science heavy media franchises there is

I don't think anyone was saying otherwise, to be fair. We're aware, but it's more for fun. If you're going to have a huge roster, it should have a ton of amazing choices. 3rd parties apply to that too, respectively~

That roster was never intended to be realistic, the creator said as much.

Critiquing idealized rosters is weird in the first place. They're not designed to conform to typical roster standards.

That said, having two characters from Freedom Planet would be ****ing whack even with 200 characters.

I do agree with that. Now don't get me wrong Freedom Planet is a fantastic game. But I think one rep will suffice, if it gets a rep in Smash, which I think is unlikely.

I know his roster was ideal, but let's be real, there are so many third-parties that should be included before anyone from Freedom Planet.

I agree with that. Heck even Master Chief, Kratos, or Scorpion (yes the one from Mortal Kombat) should be included before them. As they are well known icons of the gaming industry. (At least in the West)

As for Andross, well with Andross, if you keep his size consistent with the games, you run into the Ridley problem, where he's too big to be feasible as a playable character. And if you downsize him, he would look kinda silly. Sorry but Andross isn't feasible in Smash. There are other Star Fox characters though, that could be feasible

If you downsized him as just a head and hands, sure, but doesn't he have a cloak now which compensates for a body?

Not that I think he'll be added. I think we'll be lucky to get Wolf back.

True, but at the same time, I don't see how that can make a complete moveset. And let's be honest here, if we are gonna get a newcomer from the Star Fox series, it's most likely going to be Krystal, (whether the hatebase such as LastJinjo likes it or not).

Fox's moveset was culled from thin air. Andross's moveset would presumably be projectile heavy and could include disjointed hands. He could be somewhat of a slow zoner or stage control character.

And whether or not Krystal does have a better shot than Andross, getting a new SF character (other than Wolf) seems akin to getting a new F-Zero character at present... it's little more than wishful pipedreaming.

Krystal has been acknowledged by Sakurai, but if she never shows up again in SF, which so far is the case since the reboot, she wouldn't get in due to lack of relevancy. Right now, Slippy actually has better reasons to get in than her due to relevancy. Wolf possibly has a better chance of coming back. That said, as much as I like Krystal, them retconning her out is a huge blow to her chances.

Krystal wasn't actually retconned. Zero takes place in an alternate timeline, so technically Adventures and Assault are still canon. (Although hopefully Command is non canon) Until Nintendo says she's no longer in the series, she is still canon. And relevancy doesn't really matter with Sakurai (as I learned the hard way in this thread) as we learned with Roy coming back (I don't care what the whiny Melee fanboys say, Roy is an irrelevant character)

Veterans are exceptions, not the rules.

Bet u didn’t know this was an option
7/58 (Current DLC in Smash 4) is around 12% of all characters.
20/115 (Suggested DLC for the roster mentioned) is around 17.5% of all characters.

It’s not much of a stretch, but one could argue that 5% makes all the difference. Say you ran out of fuel 5% before your destination. :p
