My brain is not picking up on the exact meaning of Duck Hunt.
Is it that Duck Hunt would be dismissed before his inclusion?

I supported Duck Hunt Dog for Smash from 2002 to 2014. 12 years.

When I first joined SmashBoards in 2009, I was probably the only one who put Duck Hunt Dog on my Smash 4 roster.

Hm, I don't know much about Cave Story, but I find it very unlikely that it has had a larger impact than Touhou on anything. And I'm very certain that it's legacy does not even come close.
Touhou has been one of the most prolific fan communities for years now. There are Touhou mods for hundreds of games, thousands of doujin, hundreds of thousands of remixes and covers of its soundtracks.

I don't know much about Touhou, so you may be right. I just know Cave Story is definitely a strong influence in a lot of other modern games (Iconoclasts is my go to example of a game clearly inspired by it) and Quote shows up in a bunch of crossover promotions with other Indies.

I haven't seen hardly any mention of Touhou outside Smash, but it's also not my kinda game, so I know I'm not super informed here.

Mom would be familiar with:
- she played the arcade game when younger
- she saw the Pokémon craze take off in the 90’s, lmao (everyone in elementary school was all over it)
- cause they’re everywhere
- remember that 2011 Progressive commercial? She knows him from that surprisingly lol
- not by name, but she got me FFVII in middle school so she’d probably call him “that guy from Final Fantasy”

My mom’s obviously not a gamer and only knows most of these characters by pop culture osmosis if anything

I'm not going to get caught in the weeds with you, that's irrelevant to the point I was making.

Also those other characters also didn't need research, just a basic awareness of who the character was, or just a basic knowledge of gaming. There's no Smash character out there whose inclusion couldn't be explained by a single sentence. But you'll probably just focus on the fact that I'm calling them Smash characters.

Between both my parents it's definitely a lengthy list...

- My parents played though all the 3D Mario games, and the amount of Mario Party and Kart we used to play as a family was insane. Also they know Dr. Mario from some way or another.
- Both my parents know Kirby very well...
- ...But only my dad has actually played Kirby games and would know these two
- Thanks to me my parents have the first generation of Pokemon drilled into their heads, plus my dad plays Pokemon Go
- Both my parents played through OoT, and my dad played through WW (though I'm sure my mom would be able to figure out Toon Link)
- We had a family village in the first Animal Crossing when it came out that lasted like three or four years of solid use. This continued through City Folk, and then we all got 3DS's to have our own villages in New Leaf.
- My brother is obsessed with Splatoon and Mr. G&W and my parents know it.
- My dad played through Pikmin before I ever did.
- Lots of WarioWare as a family, plus my dad played through Wario World.
- Classic games my parents played when they were younger.
- Miis shouldn't even count honestly, but Wii games were big in our house as well.
- I don't think either of my parents played MM or Metroid, but they definitely know through culture who they are.
- My parents know Sonic and played the older games.
- All games my dad played.

They never really got out of gaming, though more work means they do play less games, but also my mom crochets video game characters as a side business so she's learning a lot more even still

Hmmm... it's kind of funny that of all the games my parents played, none of them were Smash Bros.

Am I the only one who feels like Shovel Knight was way likelier than Shantae? He's a lot more recognizable and has better selling games overall. I didn't even know who Shantae was before reading Smash speculation.

Shovel knight has one game out yet he has an amiibo, he's being shoved into other indie games left and right, he's the most iconic indie character right now, he has a far larger cultural impact than shantae at least so if we were gonna get an indie character they'd go with him.

Pokemon due to pop culture. The DK characters due to playing DK64 with me as a kid. The Mario characters due to spin offs, sports, and main line games. Rosalina excluded as she is in the ones at the time he wouldnt know her.

Kirby and Fox due to me playing their games as a kid and him recognizing the designs. Pac-Man he played it...

Now that he's just an assist trophy. Shantae has a snowball's chance in hell.

One is known as the crossover champion of indie gaming and the other is just a respected member of the indie community.

The common man? Maybe not all of them, but not having worldwide popularity does not make you obscure.

Most gamers would probably know Cloud. As well as anyone who grew up with a PS1, which was quite a sizeable number of people. He is the poster boy of his genre. A lesser known genre to the general public, sure, but still the poster boy. If the term "JRPG" or hell, even anime a lot of the time comes up, Cloud does come to mind for many.

Pretty sure they have seen these characters at some point. I might be wrong about some, but these have to be the ones.

Not so much the costume, but Sakurai has been wanting him playable since Brawl. He technically confirmed the ballot helped with the costume(though he didn't specify how he knew of the fan requests, but it can be assumed to be from the ballot due to the timing). He's only said the ballot directly influenced K. Rool so far. Unless I missed a character or two.

Dark Samus and Chrom are in the same position as Geno, apparently from the Ballot requests.
