Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

A Director is YOU: You can select one and only one assist trophy from the series to become a playable character in Switch. Who would you pick and how would they play? https://www.ssbwiki.com/Assist_Trophy
Might be cheating, but I would pick Andross. Except I would want the version of him with a body before he became a planet with hands. The Assist Trophy attack could become his Final Smash.

Waluigi might be my second choice. I really like Midna and Ghirahim as characters, but am afraid they may not appear again in a main title. Although Ghirahim returning as an actual sword and the mirror of the Master Sword would be exciting. Dillon has a cool design and it seems his series is still going. Might be a possible dark horse candidate for a fighter.

Probably Waluigi. If we expand the list to Poke-Ball summons, probably Weavile.

Anyway, let's say every Character with an amiibo gets added into Smash. What Character are you most interested in?
As a top three from greatest to least, Chrom, Celica, Shovel Knight.

Easily the three amiibo that'd hypothetically hype me the most.

Shovel Knight would be nice to see in Smash for Switch. He has his own amibo, and looks like a fun character. He could have a very flashy and creative move-set in my eyes.
The only fighter that should not be in Smash for Switch that everyone talks about is Ridley. Sakurai himself stated that he is literally too big to be a fighter and I agree to be honest. You can shrink him to be a Charizard size, but it just would look weird on Ridley.
Umm, it is just Minecraft. I do not know if Minecraft literally increases Banjo Kazooie's odds in Smash for Switch at all. Either way, I do not play Minecraft so I do not know how I feel about it to be honest.

It really doesn't help their chances much. They still lack being rather iconic or having a major gaming history. This does help Master Chief, more for the fact that Microsoft and Nintendo are willing to allow Halo content on Nintendo consoles, not the fact he has a Nintendo appearance(mainly because that's not a requirement to get in). Keep in mind that Halo DS was cancelled, and the lack of any Halo content in any way via games like Minecraft for quite a long time suggested that Microsoft weren't willing to play ball with Nintendo. Now they are.

...Should go without saying it doesn't mean there's any huge chance for an actual Halo game on Nintendo systems, but it definitely opens up stuff like other cameos or a Smash appearance.

Master Chief is on a Nintendo System...

So... maybe, just maybe, could now qualify for Smash Bros?

We live in a whacka-whacka-whacky timeline.

He already qualified by having a gaming history. He was just unlikely due to Microsoft being a console competitor to Nintendo and was unlikely to put their 1st party content on Nintendo systems. Of course, clearly that's no longer the case, which is really what gives Master Chief an edge again.

Well I think Minecraft may have had a knock on effect on Microsoft's release strategy. They might going SEGA on this.

And to think they're the same people who were trying to make Windows a closed platform.

I suppose Skull Kid is a potential possibility. If a Zelda character is really considered necessary.

I wouldn't normally consider any other Zelda characters since the game has all the ones that are really as present as they are throughout the series and I don't believe in adding a character to an IP for the sole purpose of inflating that IP's numbers.

But, there's a lot of good reasons to go with that character specifically in terms of popularity of the character, the game he's from, and just having Majora's Mask as part of a playable character speaks for itself. You can't really go wrong with that choice as long as it doesn't interfere with higher priority candidates.

If I were to go with only one choice for an Assist Trophy promotion out of my most wanted promotions (Lyn, Takamaru and Isaac), my choice would go towards Isaac from the Golden Sun series.

In my eyes, while Isaac can use a sword, it's supplementary the rest of his kit, which is largely based on the Venus Psynergy (Earth Magic) in Golden Sun. For example, his Neutral Special is the Move Psynergy to push opponents away, or use it to grab objects and bring them to him. Other abilities include using earthquakes to knock opponents into the air, or if they wanted to be more technical, have him using Djinn abilities based on four of the types of Djinn found in Golden Sun.

If we seriously get NSMBU instead of 3D World after DKC: Tropical Freeze, I'm gonna rip my ****ing eyeballs out. Super Mario 3D World is one of the best games ever and I can assure you NOBODY wants another New Super Mario Bros. Release.

But, I believe the next Smash is going to port the content from the last game (stages and characters) and in addition, add enough to achieve the amount of content as a sequel, if not more if they don't have to cut veterans.

But 3D World literally can't happen because we need the touchscreen and a microphone, and the Switch lacks the latter one, iirc.

Hey I'm right there with you on not wanting not just a NSMB, but an old NSMB (oxymoron much?). But, not only is such a game real easy to ignore, I guarantee you it sells well.

Personally I didn't get much out of SM3DW, but I definitely understand why that'd be a preferable release... for us. I can also understand why Nintendo would want a 2D Mario out there to satiate its immense user base. Especially since this year they seem to be doubling down on their old family courting habits. Personally I'd think the NSMB games were simple and iterative enough that in six years they couldn't just make another, but here we are.

Frankly idc about that, I'm just happy Smash is ostensibly coming this year.

True, but Legends was released on other consoles on the same day as the Wii U version... maybe I'm ovethinking this...
If Nintendo really saw value in moving the game to Switch, they would. It's not like it's SF0.

Yeah, Star Fox Zero really has no chance of seeing a Nintendo Switch port with its heavy reliance on the Wii U's GamePad.

Tropical Freeze made the cut, since it's not like the GamePad was mandatory for playing the Wii U version of the game.

It technically was mandatory because it was forced, iirc, but it didn't use any of its features aside from Off TV-Play (like every Wii U game, basically)

Master Chief's in there and tbh he's a significantly better choice than Banjo. Halo revolutionized FPS games
Inb4 "Xenoblade 2 is the FE Awakening of the franchise, so it's 100% guaranteed it'll get a rep for the next Smash".

Which, again, I wouldn't complain at all.
eeeehhhhhh Awakening was a 'make it or break it' situation. Xenoblade didn't suffer multiple poor sales before a new game became a big hit

Switch already sold more than Wii U already, and I am sure that a Smash for Switch would sell much more than Smash for Wii U.

So I'm the only one then. Huh.

I'd equate Banjo in all this to what Mega Man is in the scheme of Capcom, albeit with a much lesser impact.

But for a quick breakdown:

Halo: Codified the modern console FPS
Banjo Kazooie: Beloved former-Nintendo series
Minecraft: Showed the world that Indie gaming could compete with the big boys (before selling out like they all secretly dream of) and is responsible for the following words being so big in gaming: Open-World, Procedurally Generated, Voxel, Survival, Crafting, Creeper

In terms of impact, I'd say Minecraft edges out Halo just a smidge but Banjo definitely has more history with Nintendo. Which is more important is anyone's guess and Sakurai/new director's choice.

True, but the 2 previous entries only got moderate sales, mostly due to limited release during the end of Wii's lifetime for the former and to get Wii U'd for the latter.

Since we're talking about sales numbers (and I'm sure a few people have figured out by now that I love talking about them), here's the full list of software sales for Switch games.

Super Mario Odyssey - 9.07
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 7.33
LoZ: Breath of the Wild (Switch version) - 6.70
Splatoon 2 - 4.91
1-2-Switch - 1.88
ARMS - 1.61
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - 1.06

This means that all but two Switch games made by Nintendo (Pokken Tournament and Fire Emblem Warriors) sold over a million copies. The biggest winners here are Odyssey and Xenoblade. In just two months, Odyssey is already beating sales numbers that Galaxy saw after three years. Xenoblade 2 is the first game in the series to beat the one million mark, and it only needed less than a month to do it.

I'm eager to see if this success can carry on to Switch games coming out in Spring. It'd be nice for Star Allies and Tropical Freeze to be multi-million sellers. Heck, good sales numbers might even give them a good chance of getting a newcomer in the next Smash.

I'm done with ports. If these rumors are true, then I think Nintendo is taking porting games to an extreme. Hyrule Warriors, MK8, Pokken, Wonderful 101, Woolly World, Mario Maker, Bayonetta 2, and Tropical Freeze have all gotten ports, and now we have rumors of NSMBU and Smash being ported too. At this point, we might as well just say that Nintendo's goal is to port the entire Wii U library.

As far as switch ports go the only thing I’d want ported would be fire emblem, the first one we got over in the USA for gba. Can’t find any roms for it, my copy got stolen years ago when I was around ch 20, only places that sell the cartridge charge like $80 and only Wii U has it on e shop.

Also it’d be great if they did something like remaster it instead and lyndis made it to smash as a playable character to celebrate this.

My main question is would they just port Smash 4 to the Switch or would they make SSB5 for the Switch and change up the engine again? I like Smash 4's mechanics and balance a lot and I don't feel like a new Smash game is even really necessary. Plus it would hurt 4's competitive scene if the Switch SSB was a different game entirely.

Kind of odd to see 1-2-Switch sell better than ARMS and XC2 when it's considered to be among the worst Nintendo Switch games made.

In regards to ports, I seriously doubt that every Wii U title will be ported over to the Nintendo Switch (some of them have received 3DS ports). New Super Mario Bros. U was obviously made for the Wii U. Whereas, for Super Mario 3D World, that game has courses that require the GamePad's touch screen and microphone to complete, and one of the biggest aspects of that game is Miiverse stamp collecting.

I've already mentioned how Star Fox Zero requires the GamePad, and because it's also a game that has mixed reception (some YouTube channels even went as far as to rank Star Fox Zero as among the worst games of 2016), I don't think Nintendo will waste time making a Switch port for it.

It's only odd if you buy the hype on these boards aimed at getting characters in.

Halo is important in gaming. Master Chief is not. A less interesting Snake is not as good of a character choice as Banjo and Kazooie.

Wait. Halo is important yet it's protagonist isn't? Besides, Chief could easily be made wildly different from Snake, who while he does have explosives, generally is encouraged not to fight in his games. Plus, Samus contrast, All Banjo really has is nostalgia because people liked two of their 3 games. Meanwhile Halo has novels and Mega Block sets and if I remember correctly, a TV show in the works
