Doesn't evo start tomorrow as well and they mentioned announcements will be made during evo?

Don't get your hopes up. There's not even a guarantee we'll get a reveal.

Besides, Ashley isn't exactly the best character you could reveal at a place like EVO. A lot of people there have probably never even played WarioWare before.

Seeing how we already know 30 of the presumably 51-59 ATs, I have a good feeling no more than one of the Champions will be an AT. At this point, I have more reason to believe in a Gaurdian becoming an AT than a Champion.


...Huh. It's been a while since I last brought up the Champions. I should try bringing them up more often, just for the sake of spreading awareness. Feels like the Zelda characters as a whole have been neglected lately.

As I said, I really don’t care one way or another about Waluigi. I’m just trying to play devil’s advocate here.

Do I expect a DLc promotion? No. Is it possible? As I’m not Sakurai, I can’t say no...

While I agree with anything is possible and all of the statements (I mean come on the two name Roy thing was just really dumb...), it's very unlike Sakurai to do something like that. Sakurai....and I feel like I might get some heat for this...feels very "entitled" to his vision, like his vision is above anything else. And while he changes it for some things like Ridley, he actually wanted Ridley to be playable. There's nothing stopping him from making Waluigi playable except that it just doesn't seem he thinks Waluigi is playable material, at least right now.

That's mostly my opinion though, I will say this. Being a Ridley fan, a lot of "Oh Waluigi is a cheater and so he'll cheat his way into Smash!" sounds/feels like the hope of Ridley fans that he would be playable in 4 even after being confirmed a stage hazard. It sucks :/

On the topic of Assists/Pokeballs not being viable options as DLC, I know it's not by the same development team but does anyone remember how Croagunk was at first an Assist then a playable fighter in Pokken?
I personally feel DLC is usually more of an afterthought and they don't or shouldn't just have a list of characters they rule out for having a role on the battlefield already, though for the base game I would agree this mostly disconfirms them as it shows the role they had them planned for here.
Not saying an Assist or Pokeball will get upgraded to DLC but I don't think they wouldn't solely because of the assist role they have.

It does seem quite unlikely but there's definitely no written rule for it of any kind.

I’ve always felt Zelda was getting the short end of the stick based on how big of a franchise it is. As much as I’d like to see Urbosa (or all four champs) playable, I doubt that’ll happen. I’d be happy with a Champion assist. And playable-in-Hyrule-Warriors DLC

I did think Midna had a decent chance of getting a promotion, but she was already confirmed as an Assist. Skull Kid is still a possibility though.

I couldn’t handle Eggplant Wizard as an Assist Trophy...that would be terrifying...but Birdo yes

I'm not getting discouraged just yet. Before E3, many people thought Metroid was the franchise with one of the lowest chances of receiving a newcomer. Now, quite a few people are speculating whether or not we'll get a second Metroid rep.

Granted, most people believe that second rep will be an Echo Fighter, but it still goes to show you that out initial feelings aren't always correct. A Zelda newcomer (preferably Mipha) could very well happen.

There is very little stopping Sakurai from adding dozens of characters.
Waluigi just happens to be a side character with no mainline appearences from a franchise with already quite a lot fighters.
I don't know why people are acting like anyone but Sakurai would've added Waluigi by now.

The Game Awards are the 6th of December. I don't know what they could announce mere hours before the midnight release.

I think if there is less newcomers, you want them to be promoted as much as possible. There are quite quite lot people who are interested in newcomers and we have just three of them. You can't expect people to buy the game with the hope that maybe there are more newcomers and maybe they are good.

We will be getting some reveals, but we’ll most likely get a few secrets as well. I don’t remember directly, but there were a few characters in the two previous games () who are newcomers, yet were not officially revealed until after release. I’d expect at least two surprises.

They’ll definitely want to show off another hype character though. Like I said, I expect two directs between now and release: a general within the next month, and a Smash direct in Oct-Nov.

I keep hearing people say a potential EVO reveal would need to appeal to fighting game fans but would it really? If Ridley had been saved for EVO, do you think anyone would have cared if they weren't in a fighting game before? If Banjo and Kazooie were revealed this weekend, do you think the crowd would flat out reject them and that at least 73% wouldn't actively **** their pants in excitement? The great thing about Smash is that it intersects with so many fandoms so having a Smash fan that only cares about a single genre or franchise is pretty rare. If Sakurai decided to drop someone like K. Rool, I don't think you'd have people complaining in mass that Sakurai was a scrub for not revealing a fighting game character. At the end of the day, EVO is about hype and getting people into a fever pitch over their favorite games so I think people's standards for a "good" EVO reveal are a bit too narrow.

Completely ignoring the fact that Robin is Reflet in Japan.

While I do agree you should never rule anything out, I don't think Pokken's case fits the Smash mold, particularly because in-game/lore-wise, there are numerous members of a species.

At the very least for Assist Trophies of one-of-kind/individual characters, there has never been an incident where a major role (not just a minor NPC/cinematic appearance) where a character can appear simultaneously in multiple different roles more than stage/final smash cameos. We don't know how much Sakurai values "canon" by any means, but the lengths they've gone to in specific instances (Alfonzo: "Leave it to me!") just for things that would be only a little bit confusing makes me think they probably wouldn't break the "rule" without good reason.

Again, not ruling anything out as I would love to see another Croagunk situation, but until we see proof that they'd do that, not holding my breath for even some of my most wanted to get "upgraded."
