Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Seems like the usual suspects people would like to see are: Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Rhythm Heaven and maybe some others. Can't think of which are popular at the moment tbh.

Golden Sun is definitely the one I would like to see get a character, Isaac or otherwise. I imagine there are some other options too.

I think it'd be cool to see Ever Oasis representation. Possibly not as a character. But I do hope that they continue to explore the series as I like the design space that it inhabits. Perhaps Smash could introduce it to a larger audience.

Same with the Wonderful 101.

So in that vein, which unrepresented (with characters) Nintendo IPs would you like to see represented in Smash?
C H I B I - R O B O

I haven't even played the games but I think it'd be fun to beat up Mario and Ridley with cleaning supplies and the random assortment of items Chibi-Robo has.

It would also be nice to see Rhythm Heaven get representation as it was (very likely) gipped out of a character in Smash 4 due to technical restraints, which don't exist now.

Both of these series have lasted throughout the years, and I think that they ought to get representation in the Ultimate/Special edition of Smash Bros.

While I don't care for Golden Sun as much (I could never get into it), I do give Isaac good chances as DLC if he doesn't make it into the base game.

Okay based on Pit's new Star K.O. dialogue I have a game for everyone: name 5 characters (in the game) and accompanying new dialogue for Star K.O.'s. I'll start but I almost guarantee mine aren't that good.

1. Wii Fit Trainer: Let's get fired up!
2. Daisy: You've messed with the wrong princess pal!
3. Pac-Man: *sound when dying in the original arcade game*
4. Robin: I'll make things right!
5. Snake: OCTACOOOOOOOON!

Nintendo does seem to remember Chibi too. What with his new game coming out not too long ago and this hype inducing image

The only bad thing about Chibi-Robo is that the series actually died because its platformer game flopped out of the other exploration-themed games.

That's like if Mario Bros. died because it flopped as a beat 'em up.

His new game was like FE: Awakening. It was a swan song to see if the series could still live or if it would be cut forever.

One lived, one died. RIP Chibi-Robo, you won't be forgotten.

Other than Golden Sun, definitely Sin and Punishment and Advance Wars, since those are franchises with great games in my opinion.

Chibi Robo is another, but to a much lesser extent. Hopefully so the series doesn’t die.

And finally Famicom Tentei Club. Which is a retro game franchise that I got interested in recently. If Takamaru wasn’t confirmed I would’ve also said Mysterious Muramese Castle.

Idk, I don’t want Golden Sun to be the only new “irrelevant” first party IP, and do you think a character from these series will show up as DLC? Hopefully yes if they don’t make the base, but I doesn’t seem likely.

*OK TIME FOR BED!!! Goodnight Everyone!

They threw Chibi to the dogs though with Zip Lash

Those were dark times. When just about every Nintendo game was a 2.5D platformer

And with the poor marketing of his DS game, it would ultimately lead to his doom.
Yes, it was Nintendo's fault for Chibi-Robo's death. But it's still a death nonetheless.

I’m looking back at everyone’s predictions, and so far most of the ones I see don’t have new Nintendo IPs, and instead characters from already existing ones aside from Golden Sun and Rhythm Heaven, sometimes.

I’m hoping we get more new Nintendo IPS represented with characters aside from those, but since there’s going to be less than last time I can see why most of the newcomers are from existing or new third party series since they’re one of the most popular ones.
I said this earlier, but I think that for Sakurai, it is important to implement new series in Smash Bros. He did make a big deal out of the "biggest crossover of series in Smash history" with the logo of each series behind it. In addition to that, on the smashbros.com website, there is a toggle to sort characters by SERIES. I think the amount of series Sakurai represents, is important. Think of it: in Smash 4, they've added a total of 11 (!) new series, character-wise. I think this number won't be as high this time around, but a good number of 5 new series represented by a character (including DLC), isn't weird to think about, if you ask me:

From most likely to least likely I think these series make a decent shot:
1. Rhythm Heaven
2. Castlevania
3. Chibi-Robo
4. Rayman
5. ARMS (as DLC)
6. Golden Sun (but only if Isaac was one of the highest placed characters on the ballot)
7. Banjo & Kazooie (if we are lucky, they were one of the highest placed characters on the ballot, and probably as DLC)
8. Other retro series (with Sakurai saying we aren't getting many characters, I think a new retro character is pretty unlikely since they didn't end up high in the ballot apart from maybe Takamaru but he is already deconfirmed)

Any thoughts?

Round 4 up~~

That was quite the response, more than I was expecting! Glad people seem to like the icons. And duly noted on the requests. Some of those characters will be done in the future, but I can't promise all of em.

Also it's hell finding a decent Simon render. If anyone has anything to work with, shoot it my way plz! (apart from the statue and the Judgment... thing)

I'm more interested in getting my hands on that gorgeous Decidueye render

Credit to someone in the Decidueye thread, but apologies, as I can't remember who.

Sorry for going off topic but can I use that Decidueye banner thingamajig on his support thread's OP?
I'll give you credit, of course.

Chibi Robo strikes me as one of those characters that was talked a lot about before, but no one is guessing now and everyone has written off, but if he happened everyone in hindsight would be all "yeah he was obvious, good moveset potential, sakurai and nintendo were clearly pushing him when smash ultimate was in development etc..."

Interesting tangential reveal, but a new Shonen jump crossover game was now confirmed for mobile devices, with a “smash like style combat” (I say that very loosely based on the images seen in the thread). I wonder how much this helps or hurts leaks that mentioned a game like that would be announced.

That doesn't look like Smash at all. It looks more like a fixed-camera arena fighter.

Question for you guys, Are some of you still Salty about Corrin Inclusion?
I haven't in the first place back to Smash 4 DLC era, and have even less reasons to be so now.

I'd probably get bitter if we get a 7th FE non-Echo newcomer though.

So I just watched the Sakurai interview recap on gamexplain. From what he said it makes it sound like there won’t be any ranking system. As he is worried that new players will give up playing older players and still insisting we need items to level out the playing field.

If that is the case I can’t describe how mad that makes me. It just seems like a very dumb problem that hundreds of companies have already found a solution to. A crap ton of 1 hit ko items aren’t fun. Hell the Pokémon aren’t even fun anymore. You know what made smash 1 Pokémon so great. The fact the when snorlax came out you knew you needed to run for your life. Or beedrill meant you needed to jump through them like the matrix. Everything was dodgable though. Also just put a freaking ranking system in place so people can play other people at their same level. Mario kart has it. Splatoon has it. Get with the freaking times

I feel like Chibi Robo would be a great candidate for a character not revealed before release.

I wouldn’t include 3rd parties in it. But oh well.

I was talking specifically about 1st Parties. Which to be honest there really aren’t a lot of.

What I think are decent are:

1. Rhythm Heaven
2. Golden Sun
3. Chibi - Robo
4. ARMS
5. New Monolith Soft IP
6. Retro IP

3rd Parties I think are likley are:

1. Castlevania
2. Rayman
3. Banjo and Kazooie
4. Kingdom Hearts

If it’s for the base roster then it’s really just Golden Sun, Rhythm Heaven, Whatever Retro IP, and Castlevania. Sheesh, not a lot left to be honest. Nintendo hasn’t really done much recently after Smash Bros launched, so I sort of expected this.

With a limited roster, I find Chibi-Robo to be unlikely. It would probably be pushed aside for Xenoblade, Pokemon, Rhythm Heaven, and Ballot choices. But if he does get in, that’s great, but I would’ve be salty because they could’ve picked someone from like Sin and Punishment or AW instead.

Though with DLC, I expect a lot more than just 5.

I hope that the ballot covers most of the new characters (seems to have so far) but I also hope there' some space for off the wall characters.

Things like the Stylist from Style Savvy or Nikki from Swapnote and others.

5. New Monolith Soft IP
When is that new Monolith IP releasing? In like, 2021 or something? Don't think Smash Ultimate DLC still exists then, but oh well.

Actually, for the base roster I would say for new series they will put Simon (Castlevania), Chorus Kids (Rhythm Heaven) and maybe Chibi-Robo / Isaac in as well. But more than that? Nope, I don't see it happening. Unfortunately, because I really like new series representation in Smash. I think it is weird that like 3/4 of the prediction rosters don't even have a Rhythm Heaven character on it.

I’m pretty sure they’ll space out the DLC and do it for the long run.

But if they still release DLC while that game comes out, I say it’s pretty likely.

The thing is, Nintendo hasn’t done much with their IPS throughout the past couple of years. With only Xenoblade and Pokémon actually having characters for newcomers. A lot of choices from the ballot are also from pre existing series like Geno and King K. Rool.

And with a limited roster, it sucks that Issac is probably the most likley new Nintendo franchise character from the ballot, and even he isn’t considered a strong possibility, with the only new Nintendo franchise to be considered likely to be added is Rhythm Heaven. Every other possible new franchise are really 3rd Parties, aka guests.

I want some other ones like Advance Wars and Sin and Punishment to be added to the list as well, but it sucks that they fail on both popularity and relevancy.

I figured I'd give my input on which stages are returning and which are not

Peach's Castle and Kongo Jungle: While I know even stages from the Wii U version are getting recreated, it would still seem pointless not to just port these stages over as they'd look identical anyway. Especially since Kongo Jungle Melee was renamed. But it leaves me wondering if Peach's Castle Melee will be renamed

Zebes: It's very similar to Brinstar. While also different enough that both can coexist. But I do kinda doubt it

Sector Z: Highly doubtful, while a bit bigger than Corneria, they're still essentially the same

Mushroom Kingdom (both): I think we're getting one or none. We do already have Mushroomy Kingdom too. And Mario Maker for SMB1 stuff. But I do think we'll get one. Both is possible but not likely in my books.

Rainbow Ride: I'm leaning towards no. Stages as dynamic and platform heavy as this seem be a thing of the past. Even Orbital Gate was more like different sections instead of constant movement. And 3D Land either always has plenty of place to land or it's not actually scrolling. We also do have a lot of Mario stages already

Yoshi's Island Melee: It was in the Wii U version, but those stages are getting updated too. So just porting could mean standing out more unlike the 64 stages. But it has been here since Melee so why not?

Fountain of Dreams: It's a megaton fan favourite for its beautiful visuals. It has no reason not to return honestly

Poke Floats: This one gets mixed love and hate. But I don't think it's returning, very dynamic like Rainbow Ride and you start on a giant Squirtle who is also playable.

Brinstar Depths: I'm leaning towards yes. We know the stage is getting a new remix. And it had a very memorable atmosphere and Kraid is pretty popular. Helps Metroid only has 3 stages back so far.

Mute City: Mute City is coming back, I have no doubt on that, question is which one. I actually think it will either be both or this one. Mute City is the most iconic F-Zero location. It should come back

Icicle Mountain: Vertically scolling stages seem gone and it wasn't exactly popular

Delphino Plaza: I hope it's back. We are getting a new remix so I think it has a good chance. But we do have a lot of Mario stages

Mario Bros: This stage was a mess. 8 player might improve it but this was one of the most unplayable stages ever made, but I could see it coming back. But I do lean towards no if they have to limit themselves.

Jungle Falls: See Icicle Mountain

Pirate Ship: The only unconfirmed Zelda stage. It's a stage to me that should return but Spirit Train does seem to have the toon games covered. Especially with it being in the background of Toon Links page on the site. So I'm actually thinking its not coming back which is a shame to me

Hanenbow: This and Miiverse are currently the only emblemed universe not in smash ultimate. I think that's probably how its going to be too.

Golden Plains: This is a tricky one. We know Golden effect is back, but it's affect has been changed to that of a Xerneas like powerup rather than completely stopping knockback. It's gimmick was initially designed to take advantage of 3DS but it be tweaked to work on other systems. I lean towards no though.

Rainbow Road: This stage should be back, Rainbow Road is probably the most iconic Mario Kart track out there and it sucks we just have two Mario Circuits right now, even with so many Mario stages, this just seems like something that should be back. I mean the Wii U version had 4 different Rainbow Road themes.

Paper Mario: I think we should have a stage from the Mario RPG series. But I think we're getting a new stage instead. Mario has always gotten more than one new stage. Even with all of its returning stages I still expect Mario to get multiple new stages too. On top of New Donk, I'm thinking a Bowser themed stage (me thinks World Bowser or generic castle) and a Mario RPG stage (Paper Jam would be brilliant if pulled from the entirety of both series)

Dream Land: This stage gave me the impression it was only there for the handheld aspect of the 3DS version. It'd have a cool gimmick if it wasn't limited to one franchise. I'm leaning towards no

Mute City: While I think Melee Mute City will take priority, I actually think we're getting every F-Zero stage just like Earthbound is. It's also unique in its layout among the F-Zero stages and stages as a whole.

Pac-Maze: Here's the thing, I actually think we're only getting one stage per third party franchise, and it's gimmick was very dependent on the 3DS.

Woolly World: No way it doesn't in my opinion. Woolly World was successful enough, got a bunch of tie in amiibo, a 3DS port and a sequel on the way. With its unique aesthetic, I can't see them leaving it out

Jungle Hijinx: I'm curious how this stage will function with more dynamic backgrounds but I don't think it's a big deal. It should return

Pyrosphere: Definitely don't see this happening, with Ridley FINALLY playable, I don't think they'll also have him as a boss, even if that was a clone

Orbital Gate Assault: They put a lot of effort into this stage, I don't see them not returning it. Plus it helps it might have actually been spotted on Meta Knights stage

Gamer: I don't see why this stage wouldn't be back. Unless the dynamic backgrounds would affect the mum too much. But Wario only has one stage so far. And this was an awesome stage.

Windy Hill Zone: Again, I think Third Party stages are stuck with one stage each, sort of equal them out in way. And Green Hill is THE sonic stage. Plus if we got another, I think it would be from Forces or Mania

Miiverse: nope

I've been seeing a lot of Simon/Chorus Men/Chibi-Robo talk on here, and I couldn't help but feel that those would be some of the most boring newcomers to add to Ultimate.

Seriously, just imagining them as the last few newcomers makes me somehow slightly less hyped for this game.
EDIT: I could accept Simon, but if the Vergeben thing was real, then some of the excitement will have been taken out of it for me.

Orbital Gate Assault: They put a lot of effort into this stage, I don't see them not returning it. Plus it helps it might have actually been spotted on Meta Knights stage
Wait.

Where did we maybe see Orbital Gate Assualt?

I can't find it.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. In contrast to how you feel, I'd love to see Chorus Kids, but Geno feels like a very uninteresting addition.

Chibi-Robo takes the janitor job and makes it fun. You don't just do that by luck.
