Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'm of the opinion that all leaks are fake until proven otherwise unless it's mentions Boshi lol, but I've been wondering. What will it take for any of you to actually believe a leak? What's are the boundaries that keep you from believing one?
For me to 100% put backing into a leak and fully trust it, I need video footage of at least one entirely new newcomer fighting a veteran we've seen played at E3/CEO before, so we can compare and tell if this really is the game or if it's just some elaborate fabrication. Although, I will believe things with faaaaarrr less evidence than that purely off of gut feel, because I'm not THAT hard to fool, but objectively I think the above is what we need to really trust one.

Here's an edited roster of 74, which I think is going to stay my roster for a while. It features 8 unique newcomers and 7 echo fighters, which is probably more than we are going to actually get...oh, well.

Newcomers:
  • Ashley & Red Cast A Spell! (Wario) - Ashley and Red are by far the most popular Wario characters, and the two have a set of skills that, unlike some of the other reoccurring Wario cast, could transfer very well into a moveset. Ashley & Red as characters could be based around Ashley casting spells to change the attributes of their opponents, such as making heavier opponents lighter so they're easier to defeat, or making a faster character slower so they're easier to trap. This could be balanced through making the effects of these spells somewhat inconsistent (much like in canon) and only lasting for a short period of time. The fact that Ashley's assist trophy is gone makes me think that she will likely join the battle as a playable fighter.
  • Geno Whirls Into Battle! (Mario) - I spoke about Geno on my last post, so I'll just skip to the moveset discussion. Geno is a character based around timing in Super Mario RPG, and I think this could definitely transfer to Smash by making his moves stronger and having additional effects if you follow up your combos in a rhythm. Basically, Geno is a moveset-wide version of Marth's dancing blade, and I think he could be a character who rewards players who are extremely familiar with the game, as he is extremely difficult to master.
  • King K. Rool Krushes the Kompetition! (Donkey Kong) - K. Rool's moveset potential is literally endless, as his popularity for all intents and purposes, but his main gimmick of being a heavyweight based on projectiles and trapping rather than brute force already creates a very fascinating idea of a character. Rather than relying on his brute strength (which he does have and will use if he has to, make no mistake), K. Rool should rely on his blunderbuss and other weapons to make the battlefield an utter living hell for every opponent he faces, and not be afraid to use dirty tricks such as playing dead.
  • Elma Makes It Double! (Xenoblade) - Also already spoken about Elma, and I think she is the most likely new inclusion out of everyone here. Her dual pistols and blades could make for a very interesting technical character who is focused on changing weapons for a dedicated situation (like starting with the pistols to get an opponent that is far away, and using the blades to finish them off when they're up close).
  • Lip Puzzles the Opposition! (Panel de Pon) - A change in retro pick from the previous roster of mine, Lip ended up beating out Mach Rider because we've seen the re-designed Lip's Stick flowers, but not the stick. I think this is because Lip is joining the roster as a playable fighter, and I have a rather cool moveset idea for her. Lip would be the game's lightest character and be easy to defeat, but wield Lip's Stick as her weapon, which, like other games, gradually damaged opponents once flowers are placed on their head, but unlike its other Smash appearances, returns the sapped health to Lip once she attacks again. This causes Lip to be a character who benefits most from being at lower percentages, a stark contrast to the power boost gained by heavyweight characters due to rage at high percentages. Plus, we haven't really had a healing character yet, and Lip could be a great character to use this idea with.
  • Ridley Hits the Big Time! (Metroid) - Confirmed.
  • Inkling Brings the Paint! (Splatoon) - Confirmed.
  • Never Fear, Simon Belmont Is Here! (CastleVania) - Basically confirmed, and could use his whip to make a fun ranged moveset based on grappling opponents and using the iconic weapons from the CastleVania games. Simon could be an utter terror to air fighters due to his sheer range, but perhaps this could be balanced out by somewhat limiting his KO potential? A heavyweight based on whittling opponents down could be another interesting take on the weight, much like K. Rool above him.
  • Honorable Mentions: Bandana Dee, Lycanroc, Mach Rider, F-Type, Chorus Men
Echoes:
  • :ultpeach: -> :ultdaisy: - Confirmed.
  • :ultdiddy: -> Dixie Kong - As said on the previous post, the fact that Diddy's tail attacks seem to be gone is suspect as all hell. While I think Dixie should and could be a unique fighter, an echo of Diddy is likely.
  • :ultsamus: - > Dark Samus - Samus' costume and the assist trophy are gone; something's fishy. Dark Samus I would say is the most likely echo, as she has multiple things leading to her inclusion and is literally just a pallet swap.
  • :ultpit: -> :ultdarkpit: - Confirmed.
  • :ultmarth: -> :ultlucina: - Confirmed.
  • :ultinkling: -> Octoling - This one I was kind of iffy on, and ended up bouncing between Octoling and Chrom for a while. However, the squids won out simply because of how popular they are without having a pre-defined role, and Splatoon could definitely get two reps if one of them is a clone.
  • :ultsonic: -> Shadow - Explained this on the previous post, nothing new to say except for the fact that his Assist Trophy is gone is suspect, especially because he's been one for two games in a row.
  • Honorable Mentions: :ultsheik: -> Impa, :ultike: -> Chrom
I think this roster is the winner

We talk too much about characters and stages and whatnot, so I wanna ask: What small, quality-of-life changes do you wanna see in Smash Ultimate?

Personally, if Stage Builder comes back, I want the ability to assign more than one song to a stage.

Agreed on Stage Builder.

I want Bonuses back. Just without it giving you a Trophy for getting every bonus. Sure, record each one you get for fun.

Let us choose/record what attack/s the computers use in training mode so people can finally figure out how to counterplay some things, such as learning how to SDI Bayonetta's Witch Twist combos instead of having to use a human to teach them everything when they might not have any Bayonetta main friends who'll help them out and practice it.

Someone mentioned a pretty nifty idea: What if like how Snake had his Codecs and Pit had Palutena's Guidance-

Little Mac had Doc Louis giving advice a la Punch-Out intermission round cards.
There will be Something new, we know that much.
Melee had the Starfox chatter on Corneria, Brawl had the Codecs and Sm4sh had Paltena's guidance.
Doc Louis pointers seem a fair possiblity so I could see that, or something similar like pre-fight commentary on Moray Towers by the Squid Sisters and/or On The Hook.

The ability to select which kind of assist trophies I want to use.

For example, if I have a Mother-themed match, I only want Starman and Jeff coming out of those things.

I got a soft spot for those old bonuses. Single player modes have always felt a little hollow without them, you know?

Do we know why they were left out in Brawl and 4? Could there have been some kind of technical or logistical issue that we haven't considered?

Who knows. I mean, they slightly existed in Brawl as it gave some end match stats, but 4 had nothing of the sort. It could be just something that took too long to make work well. It's another full mode and has many stats to program, due to how they work. Not simply number of KO's, but how many points for each one. Could be simply "not enough time". 4's own RNG system during Classic might've been the effective replacement for it. I wonder if the actual new versions of "Achievements" Brawl introduced was meant to replace the idea?

But yeah, nothing is known on that. At least, that I've heard of.

Okay, so this one's takes some splainin'

I want to be able to save which stages are always BF'ed, which ones are always Omega'd, and which ones have their stage hazards off, while keeping the rest as they are. This way I never have to toggle these things on and off per stage selection, or worry that we cannot use Random in case a stage I would have wanted to only do Omega gets chosen as is. Just give us a screen listing all the stages, and we can perma-toggle these things on these stages and save their changes individually.

For instance, I want New Pork City to be toggled to permanently BF, while knowing that Magicant is always "Stage Hazards OFF", while also always having all the Sonic Stages Omega'd, and anytime they get chosen, they are always set like that.

I also want to be able to set all my characters to a color/alt of my choosing, so when I go to Pit, he's already on "Yellow", or if I go to Greninja, its always on "Black" Greninja.

I would like the option to set how frequently each individual item will appear. You know, instead of setting them all on High or Low, I could set Beam Swords on High and Poke Balls on Low.

Another "leak." The "leak to end all" leaks apparently.
http://boards.4chan.org/v/thread/423318271
I have a friend on the Bandai development team who provided me with some information regarding new playable characters. As many of you with development experience will understand, he's working under contract and signed a non-disclosure agreement, so he could get in legitimate trouble if I shared his name (or mine, and they trace the leak to him). It's irrelevant whether or not you believe this; makes no difference to me. He claims it's true and that these will be gradually revealed via official announcements, intentional leaks (apparently that's a thing), and of course fully proven upon release.

There will be 9 new playable fighters (including Ridley and Inkling). Simon Belmont, King K Rool, Geno, and Skull Kid were chosen based on the sm4sh dlc poll results. Also, there will be a new playable pokemon, and 2 more characters still under development which he personally doesn't know who they are yet (or won't tell me anyway).

Also, there will be echo fighters for the following characters: Sonic, Ike, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Mario, Samus, Sheik, Inkling, Little Mac, and Captain Falcon. That's 13, counting Peach, Lucina, and Dark Pit, which were already confirmed. Echo fighters always come from the same universe as the original fighter, and have the same moveset as the original, but with some different properties, effects, animations, range, and power/speed balance. Obviously they’re way easier to include than new fighters.

He claims there will be 2-3 more dlc characters and echos released a few months post-release, to sustain sales.
Fake, as per usual. 85 characters on the base roster is definitely pushing it, and while I totally advocate for more Echo Fighters, 13 of them? That's way too much.

I'm surprised Simon Belmont has blown up as much as he has in Smash Ultimate speculation. Vergeben was the only reason anyone as really talking about him seriously and despite the majority of the community dismissing him a while back Simon is still front and center in speculation with no new Castlevania game in sight.

Besides being able to change the default ruleset, I want customizable ruleset slots where we can make and save preconfigured rulesets and easily switch between them as we pleased

I want invidual character language like in BBCTB, so we can do stuff like having a japanese Marth and english Fox at the same time.

The smash 3DS feature where the last chosen character alt. becomes the default alt should be added to nametags.

Hey guys, my verifiable sources leaked the entire roster to me! So naturally, I put in a ton of effort to present it in the form of a cryptic picture puzzle! Each picture vaguely represents a newcomer.

"Why", you ask?

w-well, you see, uh

Guyz I totes have insider info. Plz beleaf me.

There's gonna be 89 echoes and 1 semi unique character, Luvdisc, who has some unique moves but has some that are taken from Snake. Also, the only DLC there'll be is the ability to turn every stage into Pac-Land. Actually, it's not even DLC, it'll be an update that happens atumutically and just turns every stage into pack-lund.

Sourry to boorst your bobbles, but this is the gospel truthe.

Here's a crazy idea I had for Classic/Adventure (& maybe All Star) mode trophy unlocks.

If they go back to the "Difficulty + Stock" Model, what if you can select up to Five different Fighters, these fighters become your stocks, and when you get to the end of the Mode, you get the Mode Trophies for all five characters (you can, of course, just pick five of the same character).

It would certainly streamline Trophy Unlocks for completionists.

Can someone inform me who was this Gematsu leaker and what significance did he play in the past?
Sal Romano from gaming site Gematsu jokingly said he guessed Mega Man, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Pac-Man, Miis, Chrom, a Gen 6 Pokemon and Palutena as someone told him those characters would be in Smash. All of these ended up being right except Chrom, who Sal's source told him would be playable and when Robin and Lucina's trailer popped up, he said "Enjoy my boy Shulk" Whether or not Sal's source had legit but outdated information or was always full of **** is hotly debated for some reason

So what are your top 3 tracks you want in Smash? And yes, from different franchises...

1. "Final Boss" from Yoshi's Island

2. "Mechonis Field" from Xenoblade Chronicles

3. "Last Day" from the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
1. Shellfie (Splatoon)

2. A song from DK64 (Like this one)

3. Chozo Laboratory (Samus Returns)

Honestly? I think it's impossible to keep count, only one we know for certain was one that called Ridley, Daisy, the title of the game, the release date and Bomberman as an Assist Trophy which we all deemed fake, personally, I called fake the moment I saw the name because Smash Ultimate is a dumb name imo

The Dark Matter Trilogy was directed by Shimomura rather than Sakurai and the two clearly had different views on how Kirby was to be handled, which is easy to see in the tone and style of the games compared to Sakurai's. The no-humans thing was made as one of the two rules for the anime (the other being that Kirby never talks) rather than the games. I doubt Sakurai cared about the character in particular, considering she was a boss in one of her two appearances and a support character in the other. The Dark Matter Trilogy and Sakurai's games were often within their own realms, such as Meta Knight never appearing in Shimomura's games and the Animal Friends never appearing (as more than cameos) in Sakurai's games or the anime. It's probably just a matter of preference than any kind of disdain for the character.

It's kind of like how Wario never appeared in main Mario games because he was made by Gunpei Yokoi rather than Miyamoto.

And this is why I stand by the belief that "Sakurai Bias" is just a petty assumption by fans disgruntled about their favorite characters not getting in: the developers don't flat out hate anything in particular in the franchise, it's just that they're either more accustomed to or capable of accessing resources from certain franchises over the other. This explains why Kid Icarus got so much attention: it was developed by the same studio and used a similar graphics engine for the 3DS game, so they took what they could and added tons of stuff. There's no favoritism, just convenience.
