They had no way of knowing that Xeno 2 would do better than Xeno X at the time. Nor could they even be sure Xeno 2 would be RELEASED by the time Smash was out.

Actually... it's possible, the base roster was decided in some moment in Mid 2016; when Xenoblade 2 was still unknown.

The reason a Xenoblade X character makes sense over a XB2 character has to do with development timing. Knowing what we know about when Smash Ultimate started development, X was fairly recent and iirc Monolith said they were even interested in porting X to the Switch. XBC2 didn't come out til after Ultimate started development.

As far as Ashley goes, her influence and popularity branches out farther than just Warioware games. She's all over advertisements in Japan for things not even related to Warioware. She is an insanely popular character in Japan.

Next, "earned representation" is a bull**** concept created by speculators. Sakurai cares more about making characters that are fun/interesting than accurately representing a franchise based on their sales. Why else would Fire Emblem have 6 characters and Kid Icarus get 3? Kid Icarus has had like 1 game in 20 years

Lastly, Waluigi isn't a Wario character. He's a Mario sports character. If you want to bring up the Smash Direct in 2014 as a piece of evidence that he is a Wario character, you can see that they changed his symbol to the Mario franchise in the full game.

Honestly, as much as I dislike Xenoblade X, it's far more likely to be reprsented than 2 if Sakurai wants to give Xeno more representation as Nintendo's new "flagship JRPG" or whatever.

It's got a decent amount of sales, a character with large moveset potential, a setting that would make for some easy stages, came out at just the right time, the stars align pretty well for this one.

Also there's no direct relation between how big is a franchise and how many characters it can have.

lol they gave themselves away with that "10 members of the press know the final roster". why would press members know the roster 6 months ahead of the game releasing? how would that help them? also it would be ridiculously easy for nintendo to hunt down the source of the leak if only 10 people know about it.

Lin has Monado hairpieces in X, Shulk is now a playable blade in XC2, and one of the villains of XC2 wields a Monado as well. I don't think there's a better icon yet for their series so far.

Xenoblade X was a fantastic game, but it didn't really have any characters that stuck with you. What it did have was one of the most fleshed out maps in the oversaturated genre of open world games, so yeah, I'm thinking it'll just be a stage.

i see people comparing ridely to waluigi. its just not the same. ridley fans have been crying since melee came out when he appears in the opening movie. imo waluigi fans seem to have an infated opinion of his worth to nintendo and that his legacy is larger than it is. Even now i see waluigi as more meme than character.

Well it's not like she has no character. I appreciate her strong leadership skills, tactical touch and how she puts herself in other people's shoes all the time. Also, I'm only like 2 hours into 2 but it's not like Rex and Pyrra aren't tropey as hell either, though I still would rather have the latter.

My question is: How do ten people know about it? That suggests a conference of some sort, something official. Unless the ten of them all got Bill drunk and tried to get him to spill the beans.

As someone who hasn't played X or 2, I'd have to say I kinda lean towards more Elma being in smash. Not counting actual likelihood, I just find myself preferring her design and fighting style. Not to say Rex and Pyra wouldn't be great in Smash, but Elma just has more going for her in my opinion.

I can see X getting a rep over XC2 depending on when Sakurai made his plan for the game, which was somewhere in 2016. Now XC2 was in development before that, but X was already out and he could have more to pull from there. Either way XC2 is getting a rep one way or another. Whether it's the base roster or DLC. Sakurai already mentioned loving XC2.
