Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I thought it would be a cool thing to have some of the unlock methods be the same ones that were used in the previous games...

....but then I remembered Mewtwo and I was like "you know what, never mind".
I doubt Sakurai would do anything like that this time around, when he said that the conditions for unlocking everyone were going to be streamlined.

Oh gosh, please don't make me go through some chores just to unlock Mewtwo and Toon Link again. It was bad enough that I had to grind through 700 vs matches in Melee and the SSE in Brawl for them respectively....

Not to mention having to grind through the event matches to get Ganondorf and Pichu in Melee. Also, Duck Hunt in the Wii U version and Ness in the original game.

Oh, I feel you, my man. As a Mewtwo fan, unlocking him in Melee, while rewarding, was a long and tedious process. Toon Link would definitely have something else outside the SSE since we don't know if a story mode is confirmed for the game.

I think we'd have to wait for every mode to be confirmed.

Oh **** I just realized something. What if we get MGR songs like Rules of Nature?
I'd love "It Has To Be This Way".

Either way, I'm glad to have Encounter back.
Hopefully we get Snake Eater back in. Because this iteration of Smash even existing really does make me feel like I'm still in a dream.

The worst part was that Toon Link, Jigglypuff and Wolf didn't even play any roles in that mode, so why they forced you to go through that mode just to unlock them is beyond me. But yeah, he should hopefully get a better method to unlock this time.

Oh my, I feel you. I mean, Smash 4 had made unlocking characters easier, but unlocking in Melee and Brawl was still a chore.

I wonder what Sakurai meant by unlocking the fighting in a 'steady' manner. He probably means that the fighters will unlock a bit faster than in most Smash games. All I can say is I heard a rumor that there will be two new modes, one of which will be the main way to unlock fighters. But having at least two new modes each new Smash game does makes sense...

I hope that new mode is the Story Mode or at least the Adventure Mode.

Turn your GameCube on. Start a stock match against a second player. Leave the controls alone for a day. Unlock Mewtwo. -.-

While I heard about that method at the time, the way it was worded in various websites at the time didn't make much sense to me. Was I supposed to play a single match for 20 hours, or where the number of matches tallied up until that amount of time to unlock Mewtwo? So I just stuck to playing 700 vs matches of Kirby suiciding instead.

Plus I didn't had a second controller at the time to keep everyone standing still for that long...

Should I bother buying a gamecube controller? Why is it so good for Smash?
Yes. Because the layout of the controller and the grooves in the control stick make life worth living.

I also play Blazblue with the Switch Pro and that control stick is WAYYY too responsive. You could probably get away with the joycons but if you gave the gamecube controller a few days I guarentee you'll love it more than those.

We've been over this already. One of the guys at the treehouse said there would still be a few more characterS revealed anyway. The 66 could mean we only get one more character. It also could mean absolutely nothing so...I'm gonna ignore it for a month and see what happens personally.

My theory is that Sakurai may have used a smokescreen, as in he might have led us to believe one thing, when in actuality he meant another. So, in other words, he might have led most users to assume 66 is the total fighters in Smash Ultimate, when in actuality there might be more fighters than 66.

We might expect more than 66, up to 70-75. The common theory right now is that Simon Belmont will take the 66th slot. I haven't looked enough into research, but I believe having him in 66th slot is a reference to something about Castlevania.

Guys, it's 68 fighters if you count Pokemon Trainer as 3.

It's 66 if you count them as 1.

Not that hard.
It's not really simple as you might think. For who knows, Sakurai might have used a smokescreen (see above).
I think we should take him with a grain of salt for now.

I wonder if “66” on the Smash website means there are 66 slots so far.

“Pokémon Trainer counts as one; number includes Echo Fighters”

I’m assuming that means Mii Fighters don’t count as one and now have their own slots.

Assuming there are 12 character slots per row... we might get about 72 slots in total. Sakurai did say not to expect too many newcomers in this game.

Could we possibly have only 9 newcomers? We have 3 so far... Inkling, Daisy, and Ridley. We could possibly get only 6 more newcomers.

How many months are there before Smash Ultimate comes out? 6 months!

July newcomer
August newcomer
September newcomer
October newcomer
November newcomer
December newcomer

Oh wait... I forgot about the Random slot. I guess it could be only 5 more newcomers. No December newcomer since the game comes out at the end of the first week anyway. Maybe we could have only 8 newcomers in total. Yeah, better to keep our expectations very, very low this time.
I made a post similar to this, i just thinj the mii fighters will be one slot and then leave space for 7 newcomers

Ridley is character 65, only in theory, since Echoes are not counted towards that number.

If you count Echoes, which that says it does, it gives you 68 characters, and that says it counts Pokemon Trainer as 1, so minus two you get 66.

Not that hard.

Feel free.

The website counts 65 characters not including Echo Fighters.
Besides, it would be odd to count the Pokemon Trainer as one, but not the Mii Fighters.
It flat out says it in black and white "Pokemon Trainer counts as one".

You can't select Charizard, Ivysaur or Squirtle when you pick Pokemon Trainer.

You can select Gunner, Fighter, or Swordmaster when picking Mii.

I think it makes sense.

Pokémon Trainer counts as one since you are transforming between Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard.

Mii Fighters don’t count as one since you don’t transform between Brawler, Swordfighter, and Gunner.

Hm...so if the three Mii Fighters count as separate characters...

...How would you feel if one of the newcomers we got was a new type of Mii Fighter?

It depends entirely on who else we get.

I wouldn't mind a Mii mage. But there are definitely some characters who should get in first.

I can't tell if this is a typo or not, and it's been bothering me all morning.
As other people have mentioned, it depends on how you count. 65 refers to the unique characters.

65 - 2 for PKMN Trailer + 3 for Echo Fighters = 66
It literally tells you this on the bottom

Oh give me s break. Complaining about the character select screen now?? You do know your going to memorize the characters positions after playing for some time regardless of how they're ordered.

I already understand your statement. I just think we should take Sakurai with a grain of salt. 66 might NOT be the final number yet. He said DON'T EXPECT too many, so we'll see newcomers but not as many as the earlier games.
He might have also done a smokescreen to lead us to believe 66 is the final number.

But, I'll consider your theory. Thanks for telling me.

Tsk...Your post got more likes and I did not get one...

It's not even about remembering the order, it's about it being aesthetically displeasing.
And I don't know about the others, but to me it's just a nitpick more than anything.
