Here's something that I barely ever see discussion about that could definitely play a big role in Ultimate with the majority of the roster and probably stages being unlockable: Event Matches. I feel like it's gonna be inevitable that a few characters and stages will be unlockable via Events since Sakurai said he planned on doing more interesting methods for unlocking characters.

Here's 2 old ideas I had, with a pretty good template for Event Match ideas:

Title: Let's Get it On!
Description: Everyone's celebrating the anniversary of Mario rescuing Pauline from Donkey Kong all those years ago, but a certain someone wasn't invited. Stop this party crasher from ruining the festivities!
Goal: K.O. Donkey Kong
Character: Mario (1 Stock)
Enemies: Donkey Kong (Giant, 1 Stock)
Stage: New Donk City (Festival form)
Unlockable: 8-Bit Donkey Kong Trophy

Title: Metallic Madness
Description: There's robots everywhere! Destroy them all quickly before the future is changed!
Goal: K.O. all enemies before stage changes to Future form 2 minutes into the match
Character: Sonic (2 Stock)
Enemies: R.O.B. x50 (1 Stock each, same properties as Mii Fighting Team from 100 Man Smash)
Stage: Stardust Speedway (Present form, then Future form at 2 minutes)
Unlockable: Metallic Madness CD

Here's a new idea I came up with that we're probably gonna see in Events:
Title: The Trio of Triforce Heroes
Description: At long last, the power of the Goddesses is within reach... The only thing standing in your way, though, is not 1 or 2, but 3 Links! Shall Power finally triumph over Courage?
Goal: K.O. Link, Toon Link, and Young Link
Character: Ganondorf (2 Stocks)
Enemies: Link, Toon Link, and Young Link (1 Stock each)
Stage: Temple
Unlockable: Young Link (Must defeat in 1 v. 1 match as Ganondorf)

Basicly 73-75 base roster characters may be a little safer bet than we think

I’m now in a weird place about this ‘less’ newcomers thing. On one hand I don’t think 10 newcomers would be a crazy number, but at the same time I have trouble coming up with close to that many fighters with the importance of Ridley and Inkling. My estimates have been on the much lower side just for the perceived entry bar that’s been set, but maybe he’ll surprise us still.

As much as I'd like Simon, if I had to put money on a third party newcomer, it'd be Rayman. Ubisoft and Nintendo are on better terms now than they were four years ago but we still got a Rayman trophy then.

I'd love if they brought in Rayman he definitely one of the characters I want as a third party rep. But if I had to chose other third parties to chose from, my money would be on Shantae as the third party newcomer considering the deep history she has with Nintendo she would make a good representative of a third party newcomer. Also, Sakurai is always trying to break limits, and since we know Disney and Nomura wouldn't mind it, Sora coming to Smash would definitely bring that WOW factor so his chances are looking good too.

Although it's a bit of a stretch they could pick Amaterasu from Okami and although it appears across all platforms at the time, it also appeared on the Gamecube AND the Wii. She also has a good chance considering that Okami is pretty popular (despite its questionable sale margins), and a good amount of people voted for Amaterasu on the ballot.

Plus she fights very well in her game, and in MvC3, plus she has unique and various weapons she can use, she has different reflectors, beads, and blades to chose from to attack with as well as a Celestial hairbrush that doubles as her tail (she does use ink with it but they wouldn't have to implement it like the they do for the Inklings instead she could create structures, and obstacles with her ink). With all of that coming up with a moveset wouldn't be too difficult.

Her game is also considered a cult classic that's being released for the Switch on August 9, which gives it chance to coincide with a Nintendo Direct and another character reveal for Smash. Imagine Nintendo announcing Okami HD is now on sale then they have "One more thing" (*Uncle reference*) to announce before they go and she appears in a character reveal as the newcomer for the month paying great homage to an old yet always welcomed title.

Amaterasu It's just enough out of left field that not many would expect her, but relevant and popular enough that a most players would give her a warm reception so I wouldn't count her out just yet

I just love how much Sakurai is giving to everyone in the fanbase, enough for the competitive and the casual sides. Sure, there will be people that still start complaining (Especially with the Sonic fans complaining about GHZ being a returning stage, and the people saying Sakurai doesn't care about them because a character is an assist), but I found those people to be more of a minimum compared to other Smash games

K. Rool comes to mind immediately...

KIng K. Rool definitely, and, honestly, the other would be Geno. Those are the only two that were on, or at least close to Ridley's level, and I feel they both got in on the base roster, I'd be totally fine if we got nothing else.

This is some major news for me as a speculator. Doing a process of elimination will be harder for me now.

To be fair with you, Smash 4 only had Villager in it's "main trailer" then Megaman in the end and Wii fit Trainer.

In comparison, people forget the Inkling, so, so far we have Inklings, Ridley and Daisy.

I hope he reveals who they are soon.

Vergeben is honestly still on thin ice with me. I don't know in what world he would have know Ridley and Snake, but not Daisy or how he would know Simon so far in advance. I've already decided the returning veteran thing was a miscommunication.

And him being wrong on Castlevania games is also a red flag. All of the points against Vergeben before we're regarding his spotty track record and how he rarely gets everything 100%, I'm just glad Ridley made it through.

I'm not arguing we won't get anything, I never even hinted at that. There will definitely be a handful of new character along the way, but I don't think we're getting the 75-ish characters in total like people were speculating earlier in the thread.

I'm going with my initial assumption that we're getting ten newcomers altogether, including Echoes.

I'm also sticking to my guns and saying that Zelda will finally get a unique newcomer, not an Echo. As of right now, Zelda has three semi-clones (Ganondorf, Young Link, Toon Link). That means the Zelda series now has more clone characters than FE. More Zelda reps would be nice, but I'm sick of clone characters. I think Sakurai should be wary of adding Impa or Toon Zelda as a clone.

On the topic of the Castlevania game, apparently, Konami showed something behind closed doors yesterday, according to Gamekult.

It's actually pretty normal for Sakurai to like mechs at his age...

I personally like mechs as well because of XCX, but I'm not that fond to it.

I goddamn knew all the people who were predicting five more newcomers or less were lowballing to hell and back.
Now it's just a matter of whether Echo Fighters count towards that number...

Just wanted to take a moment to say: "If you want a smaller competitive stagelist, stick to Smash 4!"

I, and my friend group, are soooo sick of day long Battlefield/Smashville sessions. Make 12 legal stages at a minimum in my opinion. I don't care if we have to completely adjust how we strike stages.

The competitive stages in 4 have gotten so bland and boring to look at that I can't wait to play on a hazardless Pokemon Stadium for a change.

Doesn't say whether or not this includes Echoes or not.
In addition, according to resetera it seems likely the new castlevania game was shown behind closed doors yesterday, which seems to grant a bit more legitimacy to what he's saying:
