Smash: RPG Style?

Idk about you guys, but when my friend got bored of smashing (yes, it's possible), he came up with a new, fresh idea: RPG fights!

Basically, it's a 1 vs 1 match on Final Destination. Items off, stamina mode, no time. First player slot gets their turn first, second slot gets their turn second. Every turn, you can run up to your opponent and attack in any way you like. If your opponent fails to tech, you get another free hit at them. It basically just goes like that until one player reaches 0%.

what does this have to do with role-playing games

this sounds more similar to horrible turn-based strategy games

what happens if your opponent does a series of moves that is untechable?

like repeated drill shines back and forth across the stage

Yeah it's an interesting concept but you'd have to tweak the rules to really get it to work/be enjoyable. There's too many ways to abuse the system as is

maybe do it in stamina mode. Attacking player can approach anyway he likes, Defending player must stand still but may choose to do any one defensive manuever (roll, spotdodge, wavedash back etc).

attacking player can use up too 3 attack points AP something like a shine would be 1 at, while an aerial may be 2 AT, or a smash could be 3. so you could nair-shine if you wanted to.

defending player is allowed 3 DP, shielding would be 1 (but once it goes down you cant put it up the rest of your turn), something like roll or spotdodge might be 2.

players switch roles after every approach. stuff like rest would obv be 3 points but only allowed once per game. stuff like charged smashes, ganon utilt would suck cause they are pretty easy to react to and take up all your AP.
