In an ideal world I would get all my Falco practice playing PP, all my Fox practice playing Mango, all my Peach practice playing Armada, all my IC practice playing Wobbles, all my Puff practice playing Hungaybox, all my Shiek practice playing M2K, all my Marth practice playing Taj, all my Falcon practice playing Hax, all my Doc practice playing Shroomed, all my Ganon practice playing Kage, all my Pikachu practice playing Axe, all my Samus practice playing HugS, all my DK practice playing Strong Bad, all my Link practice playing GERM, all my Young Link practice playing Armada twice as much, who needs Roy practice, all my Luigi practice playing Ka Master, all my Mario practice playing Mango again, all my Zelda practice playing Lake, all my Yoshi practice playing Vectorman, no one plays G&W **** him, Ness too, all my Mewtwo practice playing before Taj again, all my Bowser practice playing against Gimpyfish in the time machine in my kitchen cabinet, all my Kirby practice playing Hack, all my Pichu practice playing Nicknyte, but I can't do that because my basement doesn't accommodate twenty healthy people for more than six days, and I don't have enough money to hire kidnappers.
Anyone else find this post ignorant as ****? You talk as if Roy, Ness, G&W are useless. I'll have you know in this game we call Melee no character is useless. If you play someone who knows what he is doing and has dedicated his time to a character, regardless of what character, he/she can be a deadly force.

I happen to know a Ness player who can go head to head with many players (Gringo). Another friend of mine seconds Roy and also does very well him, often beating me (SpiderSense).

Not long ago people thought Mewtwo was useless and then along came taj and showed us what he could do. People also highly doubted Pikachu's potential untill Axe showed us all what he could do.

tl;dr-It's not about the character, it's about the player.

Roy is a gimmick character, Marth outclasses him competitively.
I'm sure your Ness friend can go head-to-head with many high-tier players. As long as those players suck more than him at the game and/or their characters.

No one's saying it's not about the player. That is common sense. If I space perfectly I will win with any character in the game. However, if I don't space perfectly only 1% of the time, then the character match-up starts to matter. If I space perfectly 50% of the time, character choice matters a lot.

When you try to glorify low tiers like this, you make the ridiculous mistake of assuming hideous skill differentials; as long as the low tier player is playing well, the character doesn't matter. You forget that the other player should be playing well. Character does matter. Your arguments are stale and fallacious.
