Brawl was sorta inconsistent with which version of each character it used. The Zelda characters were obviously designed to resemble Twilight Princess and the Star Fox characters resembled a cross between Command and Assault, but Samus resembled her old Super Metroid incarnation instead of her Metroid Prime form, and Pit was switched to a completely new art style.
I'd really like to just see the visual designers choose the characters style that best suits the game; I always thought Link looked rather out-of-place in Brawl, and should have used a different style.
