Smash 64 Section and Structural Changes (And hopefully they make smiley faces)

Hey all, after letting the discussion rage on and giving everyone ample (perhaps too long) to weigh in on what changes they would like to see I wanted to run down the final result here. The what and why and all that good stuff. So without further ado the changes.

1. Smash 64 has moved away from general gaming and into a dual Melee and 64 section

Ultimately, Smash 64 is a part of the bigger smash community. Its a game many people still play, many smashers that have moved onto other versions got their start on, and is compelling and warrants to be put on similar visibility to the rest of the series.

Putting it in the same section as Melee does a few things. It gives 64 a home that directly associates it with other parts of the smash community, allows it to have other main page forums, and does it without taking up as much room as its own section would.

I know many of you wanted your own own section. But ultimately we are all part of the same community. By intertwining you with a large a vibrant part of the smash community (melee) it will hopefully encourage more people to check it out. Probably in an even better way than the having your own section but below Melee would. I like this is the near term. People will see you guys.

In the long term, as sections grow, as events grow, it might make sense for 64 to have its own section. If anything this stepping stone that will hopefully give everyone the motivation to continue to try to get people into smash 64, to get you to the point where the best and only option is its own section based on traffic and large demand. But for now I think the best fit and what will perhaps do the most good is the dual section we now have.

2. A Backroom will be created

It was interesting to see both sides present arguments and fall on each side of the debate. The last time I saw the poll it was something like 45 for, 35 against, including seeing 2 of each of the 4 mods on both side. That is pretty telling to the parity on this one.

But in end I have similar feelings to it as I do to other backrooms. If done properly it can do a tremendous amount of good, produce resources for the community at large, create discussion, and be a leader to a furthering community.

That said this is the most conditional backroom we are going to make on the boards, likely ever. It is being created with the sole intention of producing more than it will take away from the main discussion. The 64 community is just too niche to take the most important discussions and leave them to the chosen individuals in the backroom. I 100% expect to see every finalized character discussion, stage discussion, tier list logic, rule set revision, to have not only the end result but the very logic and key debates points highlighted and presented in here (General Discussion) for all to see, all to talk about. If this is done, the backroom will create more than it takes away discussion wise. And if it does not get done the backroom will be done away with. I am not having a room that hurts the 64 community at large by taking what could be a community discussion to a smaller group and not giving back.

This will be short coming (I still need to talk to some candidates to oversee the group and make sure they are on the same page with me on the group and willing and dedicated to it) and the application and selection process will be left up to the leadership team of your new Smash 64 backroom and posted there after. That said I am excited to see it, and if it is done right it will be great for the 64 community. The backroom leaders will also have a direct line to me for making any positive changes for sake of the smash 64 community.

3. A Video and Character Subforum have been added

With a lot of large threads devoted to videos and how important character discussion is and you guys wanting them they both made sense and were created. The character room is a bit of a work in progress and is going to take time to grow and populate as it should. My hope (and perhaps a backroom project) is to get guides for each character as stickies that can also serve as a main discussion topic for _______ character. As the forum grows so will we accommodate it. It gets to the point where there are great guides for the characters it will be given a main forum page, gets to the point there is so much discussion its in need of individual character subforums so will it have. For now lets start with this and let a grow without making too many places and spreading the community too thin.

4. The "Smash 64 Competitive Events" section has been added

Besides general discussion, having a main page section for events for people to take part in is one of the most important things to growing a community. People are going to see it, check it out. You now have that. I know its a bit of the change to have to go the main page for it (but as stated bookmarks work wonders) but it is great for u guys.

Also, to make things easier and clearer within the forum. "Online:" and "Console:" prefixs have been added to it.

While on the subject of prefixs it was mentioned adding the 64 to tournament listings. I actually liked the idea on first mention. But as I got thinking about it though I just realized there are just very very few sole 64 tournaments that got listed there. And especially with your own 64 tournament section main page section now it just does not make sense to have those prefixs within "Tournament Listings" currently. The best application there would be some of these tournaments that have 64 as a side event. Unfortunately the level of new colors that would be needed for the new options (brawl + 64, 64+ melee, 64+brawl+melee) would just leave the forum too complex. We are exploring some structural changes around here that might help things in the long term. But for now adding a color for 64 to the forum wouldnt do much and adding 4 would leave it too complex. I think in long term, if some other things we are working on dont pan out, adding some sort of Brawl, Melee, 64 and, perhaps depending on how the 64 competitive section takes shape, a64 make the most sense.

5. There will be a global announcement about this for all to hear

Hopefully this gets your community some attention and encourages some new people to check it out. If nothing else it another token of recognition of your community.

It will likely come around the end of the week as there as one important one I want to stay up top for a bit that I am going to run within the day and I want to get the backroom set first as well so it can be detailed in the announcement.

Thats all. Hopefully in end everyone is happy with the results. Thanks for your patience and being part of SWF.

I like the fact that you're not forgetting the idea of Smash 64 having it's own discussion and actually gave some thought into where we got placed. It also joys me to see that Smash 64 is starting to be looked out for with all the things we've got recently.

A Backroom trial run seems like a good idea; as people have said we won't know for sure how it will affect the community until we have tried it out. If it works great, if not we can always scrap it.

Global announcements and both sub-forums are also good new. Basically on every point I am ecstatic. A big thank you to you and whoever made all this happen =)

While I think most of of us still wanted our own section I understand your logic behind placing us with melee. And I agree that it might actually grow our community due to melee players seeing our forums.

We really appreciate all that you've done for us JV. It really felt like we were just being ignored for the past 4-5 years and all we wanted was to be recognized.

I think all the changes and additions will really help the ssb64 community in multiple different ways.

There are three mods, not four, so it was 2:1 for:against (I was the lone against) for the backroom.

Lots of good changes. Thanks to Surri-sama for helping out a lot with the organization of getting stuff done. I think if it weren't for him, it would've been a lot longer before we had any of these changes.

When I logged on to Smashboards today and scrolled down to the SSB64 it was gone I was like WTF scrolling up and down thinking I missed it or something until I seen SSB64 merged with Melee and then I smiled >>>>>>>> :) like that. This year will be SSB Golden Age(I hope) so STRIVE COMMUNITY STRIVE, and good lookin JV we've been waiting for something like this to happen for which it seemed like a LONG TIME.

wouldn't it be nice to have a "significant" year in smash64 ? :p

I think it's been a while since smash64 had one :o

I suppose I'll post this here as I don't know where exactly to suggest it, and not that I really really care, but ....

Anyway, now that 64 is out of the general hole, I think an animal crossing section should fill it. Idk how large or small the community would be but animal crossing is fun and is present in the smash series... maybe not but I thought it was a decent idea.

Well, it isn't all we hoped for, but the move to the melee section is all we can really ask for; you acknowledged us, you gave the issue thought, and you took care in balancing the needs and rights of our community with those of SWF as a whole; I think you did a bang-up job. Thank you JV, you're our hero.

As for the backroom... It sounds like it's not going to be open, and that was something that I thought everyone agreed on- that's a bummer. What's the rationale there?

I personally don't see how it'll help and I hope it'll be closed down- but the majority wanted it, so I guess I see why you made the decision you did. I'll just try to live with the inevitable problems it presents, and hope that they don't pick too badly.

Our BRoom will be VERY open with the public (as it says in the OP) and has to give very clear rational for ALL things done within the BR...which imo is a PERFECT set-up

He understands the risks very well as he pointed them out and distinguished why he thinks it can work regardless

It's up to us now, NOT to be stupid...got that folks? :p

Ergo it won't be "open" in the sense that I obviously meant. Ergo I would like an explanation for why this is so, because we all asked for a viewable-by-all BR at the very least. Read the post before responding. Thank you.

I don't mean to sound entitled or pissed off- I'm neither. But god, I hate the idea of not even being able to see what the BR members are saying. The only thing that makes this OK is the fact that there are no decisions to make, so (hopefully) nothing'll get decided that screws us over.

im happy with all the changes

backroom is a well designed concept, and we'll make it so even the haters will acknowledge it worked

now comes the inevitable ego wars about who makes it into the backroom

Great changes. Is it possible to access the data concerning how many persons visit the boards ? Just to see if there are fluctuations already noticeable.

People will be receive infractions...butts will be hurt...but the BR will serve it's purpose and not be a "failure" not if it's run properly, which it obviously can be if it's thought about.

Really, you can see it...we have like 24 people viewing right now....thats definitely higher then normal :p (at least from what i've seen of these boards...thats not "technical data" though lol )

There's no reason to talk about infractions so soon, I'm pretty sure people have more pride than to go all over the boards for ego wars... Oh wait.

That's not even one of the many reasons most people against the BR opposed it though.

I feel like all they did was slap 64 right next to Melee to make this game seem like it's worth anything.
Sadly it's a dying game.
Don't get me wrong I love it, but I just don't see it flourishing at ALL.

That kind of behavior leads to a game's death or expansion. If you kept trying to attract new people eventually it'd work, little by little.

Then you are already ignoring the increase of traffic we have had today. even if it COMPLETELY STOPPED right now (which i really dont think it will :p), we still would have at least done better then nothing, which is a step in the right direction.

Do you have any ideas that we could use in order to promote serious growth within the community and our Kaillera server? if so you should tell us :)

no I don't have any ideas cause it doesn't seem like new players want to give Smash 64 a chance. Or that Melee/Brawl players take 64 seriously.
It's all about Brawl right now, even though that's a pretty bad game (competitive wise).
And personally I don't take online play too seriously. It's fun and all, but the console version is what matters most. Online play is just to keep the old veterans from all over the U.S together cause they can't play on console because of the distance.

i do not expect someone who has no idea on the online scene to have a correct opinion on the state of this game, as far as i can recall, there are more players now than the last few years.
and nicely done only taking US into account, there are no other parts in this world.
i am sorry but the argument you have given just feels like someone very young would write.
and i truly mean no offense, just my gut reactions.
