I was approached about being the leader of the backroom (setting up projects, organization, handling applications etc.), but I turned it down. Modding takes a lot of time as is, and with school constraints, I don't think I'd be able to be a very effective organizational leader for the BR. I will help mod it though (assuming I can get in :p).

don't think any single person should be leader, it's just asking for trouble

make a joint-leadership team of 2-3 people, each doing something specific

^^ It could work if it was the right guy. Although A$ was about the only guy I'd consider right, so lol, yeah, 2-3 peeps would be better.

What exactly is the problem with letting everyone see the backroom discussion (but only the members can post)?

I mean, i guess it could be that people would make threads to argue backroom discussion on main page, but do we honestly have a big enough community for that to be a problem? and even if so can't the mods deal with it or, better yet, post a strict rule against it?
THIS, if things go badly with everyone being able to view the backroom then change it. However, I definitely think we should let it be viewable to everyone until there is a problem, instead of assuming there will be one.

JV isn't assuming.

He has seen the problem in the past, recognizes it, and is trying to ensure it doesn't happen again.

As to what EXACTLY this is... remains a mystery

but we're all dumb and the only way we'll accept something is if we experience it to fail

can we pleeeease take that attitude it'll satisfy more people and im sure we'll stomach whatever problems that come around

Honestly it's not like it's up to me anyways...and after talking to Kabal and debating the issue i kinda feel it wouldn't be TO BAD to have an open BR.

This ALL DEPENDS on JVs reasoning though. He may have justification in this that WE ALL dont know

Here is most of the PM he sent me (reposted with permission, and I edited out a few parts). Hopefully it will give an idea to what he has in mind:

A well run backroom is a lot of work. Arranging projects, initiatives, handling applications, governing rules, and so on. Understandably the 64 metagame is far enough along where the things to talk about for it wont be as demanding as say brawl, but there will be things still on top of a lot things I just mentioned. So to be a good leader will be demanding. It will take some strong organization skills.

So with that said for your community to really benefit it needs really dedicated leader/s. The good news is if selected you get to be a driving force for good in your community and really provide value back, its a cool position to be in.

So if your still interested its pretty simple. Just pm me back with why you think you would be good for this role and your skype name (if you dont have one please sign up). Ill try to get in touch with you from there and talk a bit about the room/leadership/etc and hear out any ideas or initial thoughts you have. Leadership team will be made from there. Initially i think 2-3 members would be best.

Thanks for being a key part of your community and brining the pain with Pika or Kirby 64 style,
JV

Actually how much power has the backroom members? If all the backroom members choose a rule, and no one else in the 64 community like it. Does it still stand?

unless he is talking about tourney rules...in that case it's still mostly up to the tourney host but they would be wise to follow updated rules. (as they where updated for a reason)

Rules established by a backroom are always RECOMMENDATIONS for tourney hosts to follow. Tourney hosts can ban high tier characters if they want. They can limit the tournament to only one stage if they want. They can have mega time FFAs on Mushroom Kingdom with all items on very high if they want. Nobody is forcing tourney hosts to do anything, since everybody has their own unique opinion of an ideal ruleset.

Wtf that was the entire point of my post, TOURNAMENTS don't have to follow these rules, either.

Think you missunderstood me. Ballin said i dont need to follow rules and then surri and you said unless he is talking about tourneys. Then it can be good to follow BR rules. But like you said you dont have to. And I was asking for what you two said. If that make any sense.

I feel... like once instituted, the backroom is gonna go and change a bunch of things just for the sake of it.

Then it'll die down, and things will most likely change back to the way they've been and we'll all be happy.

Or it will create some of the most important and influential discussions smash64 has ever seen.

Who knows until we try, right?

the fact that we can't really (*maybe* the match-up thread, which is backroom material anyway) and the fact that we didn't have a backroom sort of coincide, and even if it was just pure luck that none of that occurred, it's not as if a backroom will suddenly stop any good discussion

in fact, you should be showing your own scenario has merit, and isn't just conjecture (hell, if it was anecdote i'd be okay with it)

Why do we need a backroom for such discussions, when the tier list and the match-up chart went perfectly fine?
