I honestly have to disagree with Nate on that one. Yes, there can't be courage without fear, the problem is the fear that she feels is not established well in the game, nor the series itself. Tell me, if no one here read the manga (that was never officially translated, mind you), would we have known about their past? The games don't delve into it, and most of them just jump into the battle without any context, even in the games that had cutscenes (Prime, Prime 3, ZM and to a lesser extent, Fusion) none of them touched on the subject. So none of us would've known if it really affected her without the manga, even with the manga in mind, that still leaves a hole as that's four games she's challenged him without incident before Other M. No fear was shown, nothing was established beforehand to show that she had it and was fighting it. This becomes a major problem because Other M tries to show us that she fears him, but can still challenge him, but the scene doesn't set it up at all. We don't get a flashback (of all the places they choose not to do it, here's where they did it) and we barely get context, so most are just left scratching their head, wondering what the hell is going on. Plus, while she does kick Ridley's ass in the battle, she doesn't finish him off, he just leaves and gets offed by another boss, so she doesn't really get her chance at redemption or to show how much she's grown from that moment of weakness. No matter how I look at that scene, it's a place where the game horribly conveys what it wants for the character.
And looking at that scene, that's the major problem with the story in the game. It tries to set up the characters and story, but it does it too much through "Show, don't Tell" and fails to really elaborate on the characters. The biggest example I think that shows this is Adam, we're told he's a nice father figure, we don't see much of that, in fact, some of his scenes makes you think otherwise (yeah, shoot her in the back when a Metroid is nearby, that is safe). This is a character that we're supposed to grow attached to, and yet by the end of the game, a lot of people didn't care for him and most actually grew to dislike him. There was a major problem in conveying their characters, and while I do understand the attempt, I do think that the execution was very lacking.
