Yes, like it or not, retro characters are different. They're icons from the past and they are the stars of those single or few games they appeared in.That's implying that adding K. Rool would make them lose money. And once again, no it does not affect his relevancy. Because it doesn't deal with recency.
Duck Hunt wasn't relevant. And don't give me the retro double standard stuff. People remember Duck Hunt. People remember K. Rool. Hell, I'm sure that since he's had less of a hiatus, more of the new generation would recognize him anyway.
Need something to promote? DK 64 on the VC. K. Rool doesn't need a new game to get in. Tell me exactly where that was said and maybe I'll give it another thought.
Donkey Kong is an on going franchise, one in which he hasn't appeared for a long time span. He has been replaced by one-shot characters, retro characters aside many Smash characters have recent appearances in the era the Smash game they were introduced.
The Captain has been in Smash since the beginning and is considered the mascot of his series. Heck he's much more recognized here than by F-Zero. And again, he's a veteran, not a hypothetical newcomer like K. Rool. And by your logic, should have gotten the boot a long time as there hasn't been an F-Zero game for a decade now (not counting the Nintendo Land attraction).
