How is your learning going?I feel like a complete noob; absolutely none of my Windows knowledge is usable in Linux.
But huh, I also feel like a technician now.

Well, first off I had to learn how to compile apps from the tar.gz (.deb files are useful though), and installing Dolphin is hard. Especially because of the large number of other stuff I had to install before it.How is your learning going?
Ican help you if you want

'Hope you feel better soon!Hi. I am still kind of sad after last night. More things happened between my mum and dad. I am playing Project M right now. I need to install the new update for SMM soon.
I had figured out that much already. I'll have to look more into ppa's, I guess.......actually you WILL find this VERY frustrating but don't worry I have been there before: you are doing it the hardest way unecessarly.
See, you could compile programs, however, this is very hard because
There's others way to install dolphin, just go on the website and get a download.....actually, this is NORMALLY what you should do, but mint has a little quirk: it is based on Ubuntu 14.04 (until next year) which doesn't have the dependencies it should have in the repositories which is why that if you try to install a dev version via the official dolphin website, it will say that it can't solve dependencies. idk if the stable release works, but let me recommend to use the dev version and here's how you do it: you install a ppa.
- you have to install the dependencies (the thing with a -dev at the end) and this is very annoying because if you miss one thing, it's bad
- it's long
- you only get the version you compiled
- uninstalling is way less convenient
- IT JUST SUCKS MAN! It's tedious for soemthing simple
Ever heard of what a ppa is? It's REALLY good, it's basically a personal package archive, just view it as a specific and separate repositories that synaptic will look for when it searches for pakcages and the best thing about them is if they are maintained (which the dolphin one are), they can receive update and your update manager WILL pick them so it's just like you would make windows update......better
Anyway, to add a ppa, go to the start menu of cinnamon -> administration and then you open software source which needs root access so jsut enter your root pass and then on the left, go to ppa and click add a ppa.
Now, paste this text:
ppa:dolphin-emu/gcc-for-dolphin
then click ok then add another one and this time, paste this text:
ppa:dolphin-emu/ppa
Click ok then click update cache.
Now, your ppa are there Just go to synaptic, do a search for dolphin and basically just check for install dolphin-emu-master. This is the lattest build from git and from my experience, it's VERY frequently updated.
update manager will pick updates on it
no need to compile, everything is done for you which is why I love so much the ppa system.
Now, you might be asking how the heck coudl I know that?
a simple google search for dolphin ppa gave me this link:
https://launchpad.net/~dolphin-emu/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
And it tells how to add it (it's the second ppa I pasted). However, if you read the notice on the top, it says that for ubuntu 14.04 users, you should add another ppa which is the first one I gave. This applies to you because mint is based on ubuntu 14.04 and it does uses its repositories.
I have some ppa like this for example, obs, it's a streaming software, it gets updated with the ppa and even the site of obs tells you to do this for best convenience. Ubuntu is why this is possible which is really why i reccommended mint in the first place: you egt the good of ubuntu, but with a MUCH better default UI.
However, ppa do have a downside: you should not take every ppa possible. ppa makes changes to your system by installing stuff and some for example graphics drivers (I do use one for having an updated mesa) you just need to know what you are getting into. Just assure the ppa you install are comming from trusted sources, the one I gave is from the dolphin team so there should be no worry that it might break your stuff, but pls, be careful
Did that helped you? cause you really need to know the awsomeness of ppa, i never had to
compile ANYTHING because of them
Good to know.EDIT: actually, let me explain what a deb is.
ubuntu being based on debian, this is why they are named .deb. The file itself is.....kinda unusual, all it does is it tells your package manager what to do to install something. Downloading a .deb is very conveneint because it's like an installer, it resolves EVERY sungle dependencies for you and will track them. So view the dependencies as the dll of windows, Windows will only tell you when you miss them, but the package system is smarter on linux, it basically knows where you need a dependency and EVEN if you don't need them anymore. ppa btw has deb so installing a deb is almost the same as installing one from a ppa, but the ppa has more features like having updates, a .deb will just install what it is supposed to be installing you see the difference?
btw, .tar is an archiving format and .gz is a compression format. .tar.gz is a combination of the 2
Or you could say...FINALLY!!
