Someone has been taking AP Stats. :smirk:
Welcome, brother!
Yeah, even though I'm in college now, AP Stats has scarred me for life. I'm always interested in how studies are carried out now and I question all setups.
And my political science class is feeding my addiction.

I think it's just server issues. It'll get fixed eventually.

They are but for some reason in Canada they're called Rockets.
Damn Canadians ruining our candy products.
I really dont get why they are named Rockets
Maybe they react with some common product that makes it spurt or something. Like Coke and Mentos.

Edit: Apparently Smarties and Coke can react:
I'll try and find a cooler video, but this is what I found first.
This video lies. It's not an explosion. Damn you, click bait!

Maybe this one, I guess?

maybe it's because you can crush them up and mix them with saltpeter to make model rocket fuel. You can do that will any other non decomposed sugar candy but it still kinda makes sense...
Actually why the **** are smarties called smarties in america? Smarties make just as little sense as Rockets

This whole Rockets/Smarties thing is like a slightly less convoluted version of the daddy long leg situation.

Like, depending on where you are in the world, daddy longlegs are one of three different animals.

Either these (harvestmen) :
These (cellar spiders) :
Or these (crane flies) :

Like seriously. The name was so popular people gave it to three completely unrelated arthropods.

This is th best I could find

"Smarties are not distributed in the United States, except by specialist importers. This is because the American rights to the brand belong to theSmarties Candy Company, which manufactures its own hard tablet sweet under the registered trademark name Smarties. (In Canada, these are sold using the brand name Rockets.)"

It's a sugar candy's name, no logic is needed.

Just like the inverse, which is the many names for the Puma.

I mean the mountain lion.

I mean the cougar.

I mean the swamp cat.

You know what I mean.

I see lots of Huntsmen Daddy Long-legs around here.

Granted they're among the countless species of spiders around here, but those one are pretty common compared to the rest.

Technically the Hunstman Daddy Longlegs is classified as an arachnid, yet NOT a spider, sharing a middle genus between spiders and scorpions.

Still creepy though.

I have a few questions. Did you choose this thread through random selection? Also, how would you be able to generalize the results of a sample conducted here to the worldwide gaming community? Did you randomly choose game community forums on the Internet and Smashboards happened to be one of them? Or if you're only conducting the survey only in Smashboards, wouldn't that only be generalized to the gaming community interested in Smash? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just curious about your survey. :)
No worries, I completely understand! I love these questions, since I love stats :). Firstly, no, I did not choose this thread through random selection. I had several constraints to posting to smashboards: Firstly, I could only post on Social threads. Secondly, I was advised by @Fox Is Openly Deceptive to not create a new thread, as it would clutter the boards. Thirdly, I wanted as wide a sample as possible. Luckily, the Social threads I posted to are frequented by people from various countries and cultures, so it was (theoretically) a very wide sample, with good generalizability.

For generalizing to the worldwide gaming community; this study is (hopefully, as this is my plan for thesis & doctoral dissertation) the first of several. Firstly, I plan on generalizing to just Smash/Nintendo/Fighting game fans. Then I want to broaden my next study to include Xbox fans. Then Sony, and PC gamer fans. Eventually, I will be able to conduct a meta-analysis using the data from my various studies to show generalizability to the worldwide gaming community.

As for randomly choosing gaming community forums; no, I will admit to a bias towards smashboards and reddit, since I frequent these sites, and know some of the culture and expectations within said communities. It is a limitation to my study, but all study's have limitations.

I hope I answered all of your questions sufficiently, and if not, please let me know where I can clarify! I appreciate your questions, so keep 'em coming :)

Thanks for the answer, but...
So, you're defining identifying as having compassion for?
I find trouble with that.
What if I'm an extremely compassionate person but don't identify with others at all, or visa versa?
Being / not being something doesn't mean one has to like / not like that thing in general.
Furthermore, would you classify a race (I suppose that's nation,) or a religion or a creed or a philosophy as a non-global or global element of community?
Hmmm... An interesting question. I'll be honest; I'm still trying to grasp the full extent of what defines global citizenship. My mentor is huge on it, so he wanted me to stick it in the survey as one of the three possible paths to take (it's randomized; the GC path is a "control" of sorts).

An extremely compassionate person that does not identify with others... Well, that would be a hell of an interesting case study, as I'm having trouble imagining such a person. How does one feel compassion for another without identifying in some way, shape, or form with them? Even with animals, people tend to anthropomorphize them so they can identify in some way to them.

As for if nations, religions, creeds, or philosophy identify as global elements of communities, I will admit that I have no idea. I'll talk to my mentor about it tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully have an answer for you by the evening.

Upon further inspection and introspection of that question, it seems like that would be a sociologists question, which is the complete opposite of my field. Hopefully, my mentor has a deep enough background in that type of research to answer your question, but seeing as we are interested in individual's mindsets regarding the groups they're in, I'm not sure if I'll have an answer for you tomorrow or not :/. I apologize. I'll do some research on it this week, and try to have an answer for you next week, if my mentor doesn't have one for me tomorrow.

Argh, I double posted! Please don't ban me mods! I was hoping someone would post whilst I was typing :/

First of all, thank you for answering my questions. I really appreciate it.
You answered them pretty well. I only have two now that I thought of after writing that post.
What will you do to compensate for the bias that comes from only certain people volunteering to take the survey?
Also, isn't your survey missing a significant portion of the gaming community since you have to be at least 18 to take the survey? What will you do to account for that?
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! :)

Ah, another very good set of questions! Good stuff.

Bias from volunteering is very difficult to work around. I'm trying to convince my mentor to add the survey to the pool of freshmen that are required to take at least 2 surveys per semester to get extra credit in their intro to psych courses. However, as a couple of old psychologists once said: "With careful and prolonged planning, we may reduce or eliminate many potential sources of bias, but seldom will we be able to eliminate all of them. Accept bias as inevitable and then endeavor to recognize and report all exceptions that do slip thought the cracks." Good and Hardin (2006) Common Errors in Statistics (and How to Avoid Them), p. 113. Considering this, it is easy to see that some bias will happen, no matter how many precautions I try to take. Be that as it may, I'm open to suggestions on how I can further eliminate volunteer bias.

As for the 18+ requirement; yes, it is missing a huge portion of the population. However, if we were to attempt to gather a significant enough portion of that part of the gaming community population, we would have to go to schools, get permission slips signed by parents, get permission from teachers to take some of their class time, and have the students take the survey in person. Aint nobody got time for that. Considering the sign up age for smashboards and reddit, however, I'm guessing we'll get a decent portion of that population covered :p.
