They knew about this kind of "air dodge"(I don't have a better name to call it before it is known as wavedashing) trick but I think they never thought it would be a huge part of competitive melee we all know of today known as wavedashing.
But Ridley is in the game. As a stage hazard.
What's wrong with liking Dark Pit?

One of my friends used to be like this. He saw shielding as a "weak strategy." We used to play Smash 64 on emulators at our school's PCs back in the day, and he would even set shield to any key (yes key, we played Smash on a keyboard(Yes, A Keyboard, there were four players sharing a single keyboard, those were the days)).
Speaking of Snake I have some things to vent with him as well.

I remember when everyone though lil mac was Op, now people think he's an easy character to fight since he can die so early.

Because in almost every way Smash 4 is a better game, and I'm not sure why everyone just keeps crawling back to Melee and think it's better
Because people *gasp* prefer the gameplay of Melee. It's not hard to grasp the concept of people preferring a game for it's gameplay.
There's a difference between preference and something being objectively better in roster count, graphics, number of players, number of stages, number of modes, number of unlockables, etc.
It makes sense, but then they shouldn't get made at Smash 4 for not being like it. The only difference in gameplay is probably the speed. I know Melee is faster, but it was originally slowed because they didn't like that people were being to competetive. So they made a compromise and made Smash 4 in between Melee and Brawl for speed. I think Smash 4 appeals to more which makes it better. Melee being slightly faster doesn't mean it's a better game, however they can prefer it if they want.
Having more content =/= being an objectively better game. Or else Sonic '06 would be better than all of the Genesis Sonic games.
No, there are much more differences in gameplay than speed. The skill ceiling in Melee is much higher and the game had a much better balance between offense and defense. Smash 4's speed being in between Melee and Brawl is debatable, though the majority finds it to be closer to Brawl. Again, people don't prefer Melee only because it's "slightly faster". They prefer it for it's higher skill ceiling and balanced offensive and defensive gameplay.
Hence why I said "better in number of X." 49 characters > 26 characters. 46 stages > 29 stages. HD > not HD. 8 players > 4 players. Et cetera, et cetera.

I actually like Melee a bit more than SSB4, but I wouldn't say I'd get mad at SSB4 for not being Melee. It's a very good game itself even though I prefer Melee's gameplay, stages and single player content more. So er, way to generalize things.

I'm pretty sure the reason Melee was rated T was because the rating "E10" didn't exist at the time.
