Joke characters should not be intentionally bad.

No one should put effort into designing fully functional fighting game character only for that character to be made useless on purpose, it is a waste of time effort and money that could have been put towards a character that would actually add something to the game in the long run.

Definitely not talking about TvC Roll. Definitely MvC2.

But joke characters appeal to a different group (who I find myself a part of) and speaking strictly for balance you should only have one character in any game. The idea of playing Marvel 2 with a garbage tier character who is a little girl entertains me. And it doesn't alienate a group unless you count some small number of Megaman fanboys who could theoretically be mad that the character was included but not any good.

Tiers are going to happen no matter what the designers do, they don't need to go out of their way to make a bad character when someone will have to be on the bottom anyways. If you like to play low tier then you have nothing to worry about.

Arcsys has had many joke characters and outside of the thing with Tager until recently they have not intentionally made bad characters.

May, Bridget, Robo-Ky, Bang, Tao, Platinum. Sure some of them were not good characters at times but it wasn't on purpose because there would be nothing to gain from it.

It you think anyone who worked on Skullgirls would want any of these characters with over a thousand of hand drawn frame to be bad so that only a small minority will end up playing them then...

Maybe it was easier in the past where most joke charcters are little more than palette swaps of another character and I wouldn't know if creating a character would have been easier then, but I don't think such a design philosophy would fly today in a modern fighting game.

You're not going to change my stance on joke characters by thrusting your opinion at me. What you stand a chance of accomplishing is convincing me that intentionally affecting the tier list in order to make it more fun for more people is a bad thing.

Wait... are people really saying grapplers shouldn't be super good just because they don't like dealing with them?

I had to ask just to make sure. After reading the Marvel thread in the LH (where I thought people were being sarcastic on a lot of posts at first), I don't trust the intelligence of a lot of posters anymore.

Most people do not pick a bad character because they are bad, an intentionally bad character would probably repel more people who would have liked to play that character than it would bring in people that like terrible characters.

And like I said earlier, someone has to be on the bottom, so those that like the self-imposed challenge of a bad character will get their wish anyways.

I'm having a hard time finding a character I can really mesh with in this game. I like Cerebela, but she's a bit too slow for my tastes. Valentine has the speed and mobility I want, but her damage seems to be on the low side.

I guess my ideal character would be a Baiken-like character. Maybe we'll get something like that in the future.

Why? How does that alienate players when there is an entire rest of the cast for them to play?

:054:
That's irrelevant. I like playing funny characters, not just bad characters. I also like playing good characters. Again, I'm going back to the question I just posed. Why?

Valentine can definitely still hurt you. Go to Youtube and check out some of the stuff that's already been discovered.

I must be fighting the wrong Peacocks because they are showing me that the best strategy against them with Ms. Fortune is to out zone them...

That can't be right. :054:

Or out zone then rush down once I get a hit, but I'm killing people with nothing but sneezes.

I think I may try teaming Fortune/Peacock, could be fun.

Now I just need to unlock Cirno Peacock.

Anyone want to play me today? I don't have a lot of combos down yet but I'll figure them out.

I'll play you tonight, Minato. It should be fun, seeing as how I haven't played a decent opponent yet.

Loving Valentine. She may become my favorite FG character of all time. Having trouble confirming into restands and such, but eh. Guess it's just something I gotta work on.

GGs Minato.

Did you leave or did I get kicked out? I left for a minute after that match.

I have new respect for people that play zoners, that is hard.

GGs Rutger. First time facing Peacock and that was interesting. Had some trouble getting in safely without taking too long.
I keep wanting to do frame traps in this game with normals but I don't know how to effectively yet.

Edit: I have to go eat dinner anyways. But it'll end the lobby if a person doesn't select an option after the timer's up.
And yeah, zoners are hard. People always complain about them but it's not easy as it looks playing them.

This will be interesting, I've never put any effort into a zoner. Peacock looks fun.

I had a lot of trouble punishing you, and when I did I would mess up my combo. :(

This game amazes me, after being disappointed with how the team mechanic worked in the MvC game I have played I give a two character team a shot for a little bit and I already love it.

It doesn't feel like a chore in this like it did to me in the MvC games, and custom assists make so much sense.

It's a little sad knowing I will not be playing this game as much once GG and P4A come out, but it's done a damn good job of showing me that I should never drop it.

Holy ****, but Peacock is impossible to track down with my movespeed. I finally found one that wasn't horrible and that was not fun.

I had the same damn problem. D:

I feel for you, man. Peacock is a ****ing pain in the *** to fight against when she's played to a tee.

I don't quite get how I'm supposed to play her with Parasoul. Double has trouble keeping up, but can just step through her bull****, so it's not too bad.

Parasoul's Egret Dive helps mitigate the garbage, but does nothing to help me actually get in. If I correctly read what Peacock will do, I can get a Napalm Shot in, but I'm just not winning the projectile war. Egret Charge is about the best I can do to force her to stop for a couple seconds. Once I do get in, I have a lot more trouble staying on top of her than I do with Double. It's the only MU I feel more comfortable with Double in, and it's still a *****.

Iunno. I guess I just need more exposure to it and the only place I'm getting it is with randoms who are, more often than not, terrible.

So, I tried playing a few more matches online with Filia, trying to get a better feel for her today... It only reinforced my idea that she NEEDS someone to help her get in on characters with large hitboxes/projectiles. I played this Ms. Fortune who was using j.HK every time she jumped, while her head was busy keeping me from doing anything to try and retaliate... It just seems like Filia has no good hitboxes in neutral game. Her aerials seem to lose to a lot of characters who have huge hitboxes in the air... I seriously don't think that she can fight in the air against anyone who is approaching her from the air. She doesn't seem to have any options against aerial approaches. I thought of using her s.HP, but the hitbox is too vertical to be useful as an anti-air, and her DP is just... Her DP. I know it can be cancelled out into Fenrir Drive, but the connecting frames for it are so soon, that if you activate Fenrir Drive after they block Filia's DP, then you're going to be punished.

My main point is, is that characters with large hitboxes have an EASY time getting in on Filia from the air; she doesn't have any kind of hitbox on the ground that is a practical move for an anti-air, and her aerial hitboxes are so small, that she's going to get swatted out of the air by anyone with huge hitboxes if she tries to fight air-to-air with them. Since she doesn't seem to have any practical options for dealing with people in the air while on the ground, this means that it's VERY hard to approach someone who is staying in the air while throwing their hitboxes out. I've tried all I can think of, and the only move that has any sort of success is Filia's DP... But it just sets the pace of the match back to neutral position since she can't follow up on it, other than using super, but that is super risky.

Since I can't find anything within Filia's moveset that can practically deal with people in the air, I'm convinced now that she needs someone else to cover her from people who are approaching from the air. I'm considering Valentine for a teammate, but she doesn't seem to have any move that is practical for anti-air options either. I'm also considering Cerebella as a teammate, since she does have a command grab that catches people in the air, but then the problem of getting in on a zoner comes up. Although I have heard people say that Cerebella has an easy time getting in... I don't think that's true XD. My other option is Ms. Fortune, since her s.HP has a nice big hitbox that can catch someone coming in from the air.

Another thing I want to comment on is how small Filia's hitboxes are in neutral game on the ground. Her longest hitbox on the ground is her s.MP, but, by comparison to other characters hitboxes, it is very very small. Her other hitbox of s.HP is a good move, but it's so risky that if they block it, Filia's gonna eat damage. The fact that her hitboxes are so small makes her problem of getting in even harder, because her hitboxes don't even seem to hold a candle to some other characters hitboxes in the cast.

Sorry for my very long rant X__X. I'm just hoping to theory craft her and maybe find a solutions to Filia's overall problem of getting in on a person who has large hitboxes. I'm pretty sure the only solution is to find an assist that will either cover Filia from people approaching from the air, or someone that will be able to keep opponents at bay long enough for her to get close to them. The only thing now is to find that sort of character.

Also, to all you Filia mains out there, good luck in the game, and I hope to play some matches with you guys XD. That goes for everyone else to! I'm up for a game of Skullgirls anytime ^__^.

EDIT: Also wow, I missed an argument regarding Cerebella? Darn it, why do I always have to miss the drama XD?

Nah, you're right, Fillia loses air-to-air fights a lot if she isn't in the air first (and even then she can still lose) I tried Valentine set to her command grab, which was, pretty fun, but I switched it for a low for a better mixup game

Filia seems great to me so far. The only problem I'm having is I don't know optimized/good combos so my damage output is pretty weak for now. I'm using parasoul's napalm pillar (invincible AA) as my assist. Filia has great mixups when your opponent is scared to hit a button.

Well, you see, that's where the problem is. Once Filia gets in, life is pretty groovy and you can pull off some pretty sweet mix ups for her. It's nice to have an air dash that is a psuedo triangle dash, and I agree that Filia has great pressure when she's up close.

But that's the thing, she has to be UP CLOSE. One of Filia's major problems is getting that close because her hitboxes are so small. Ringlet spike is a nice way to kind of deter your opponent from moving around to much, but Filia has trouble closing the distance from a full screen Ringlet Spike, especially if the opponent techs.

That's where part of the problem is: Filia trying to get in with small hitboxes. It is not an easy task by herself, which is why I feel she needs a partner in order to go anywhere.

Also, thanks for reminding me that Parasoul has an AA DP ^__^. I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

I honestly believe that at this point that any character can be played solo, the damage and health bonus are great, you just need a little patience.

However, if you chose Ms. Fortune then I would suggest one of her 623K attacks for an AA.

I've only played a little bit with it but Peacock's 236HK(George at the Air Show, the airplane projectile that flies in an arc) has really helped me get in with Ms. Fortune, it might do the same for Filia.

Went to the arcade again yesterday, and got absolutely bodied by a Peacock/Double/Painwheel team.

I still don't really know who I want to play in this game yet. Hmm... I'll have to mess around with it a bit more.

Here's the code for the tenth palette.

PS3: Down R1 Up L1 Square X
360: Down RB Up LB Y B

You input it in local versus at the controller select screen with player 1.
