Just practice more.

Go on platform, shield, and then press very softly down, not actually tilting so it won't spotdodge, but not as soft as to Shield-Angle.

I actually learnt it in twenty minutes and could do it in matches reliably after a couple of hours.

It's not impossible, and it's very useful.

this is just a really difficult technique in general, keep your practice up and you will get it.

Yes I wanna know that also is shield dropping the same for all characters? Does anything about shield dropping have to do with the size of the characters body/size of their sheild?

A lot of people REALLY think shield dropping is gonna like revolutionize the metagame further. I can't think of any applications when to use it.

....Can you buffer a shield drop....???????

If you do the controls while getting hit then you'll drop automatically after the shield stun. If that's what you mean by buffer...

As a rule, nothing in Melee can be buffered except actions after shield stun like jump/roll. There is no buffer window, because Melee checks to see that there is no other action occurring during the new frame of input before it will accept that input. If that's the way to word it. You can only try to perform strings of actions as close together as possible manually, in a reactionary way, not proactively buffer them to string together perfectly. Don't confuse this with IASA frames of course.

your on a platform, someone is attacking you from below. instead of avoiding and running away you shield drop and attack in between his/her attacks (marth for example)

Yeah but I main Marth :(
Shield dropping is amazing with marth. I can shield drop with about 90% consistency when I'm playing on par. The key is timing your attacks so they come out literally as soon as you drop. Fair and B are your strongest options because of their speed. Shield drop twords the edge of the platform on battlefield and realize you've just spaced a mid air B the same if not further then an fsmash. Nair single hits for resets or weird spacing works well too.

wait... this just made me feel stupid. so what is it when you crouch, then shield just before dropping through the platform? because that was WAY harder to learn. and i don't think it's even really useful. does that mean i just wasted a massive chunk of my life?

actions requiring smash inputs buffer for 3 frames. e.g. fastfall, dash, etc.
additionally jumps buffer for 20 frames during hitstun.

Found out about that earlier today on another board. Didn't think to buffer dashes though. Also didn't know the frame specifics. Thanks SB.

Is shield dropping the same timing for all characters?
Timing is irrelevant.

Character and shield size are irrelevant. Light shielding may seem to make it easier because when you press L/R lightly, you will tend to be more delicate and precise with your control stick motion.

It will definitely be huge in the metagame. I play a Marth all the time, and he has basically just stopped up tilting my shield when I'm on platforms because if he does I just shield drop into a dair and follow up with a combo. When you play someone who can shield drop consistently, you have to completely change the way you space attacks on their shield or else you get destroyed.

Yes.
Example of me buffering a shield drop in tourney

Yeah but I main Marth :(
My friend loves shield dropping into counter out of shield pressure... there is nothing more lame than that to a Falco trying to break your shield, so abuse the **** out of it. lol Shield drop uairs are great too if you just want to start a combo out of shield pressure on a plat.

Haha, thanks. Yes, you can angle a shield drop in any direction regardless of how you are facing. They go the same distance. I'm pretty sure if you are dashing to the right before a shield drop, you go further right than usual. I know for sure when you shield drop against your dash (to the left, if you're dashing right), it will send you straight down. Vice versa applies for the directions, obviously.

I love shield dropping. :3

I first found about shield dropping when I was in the Falco boards, as a way to switch Falco from defense to offense, where he's much better. I think that this can work for a lot of characters, however, and the majority of the community doesn't seem to know/appreciate/use it yet. There are times when I see people up on a platform getting *****, and I think, "Shield drop." I main Peach, and it's very useful for her, too (esp. against Marth).

The best thing is that it's not all that common yet.

Yeah, its difficulty has definitely kept it really underused, but I've started to see a few players apply it here and there. It will probably be a while before it's being used widespread, and even longer before it's being used as often as it should be. It's awkward to even study vids anymore because I keep expecting shield drops when I would do them, but they never come. lol
