Shantae, the Half Genie Protector of Scuttle Town! (A Switch To A New WayForward)

So a bit of an update on Shantae's popularity in Japan.

I've been keeping an eye on the Physical special edition of HGH on Amazon JP.
I wanted to make sure my original data gathering wasn't a fluke due to the chaotic nature of Amazon ranking.

She has been holding strong around the 50th ranking on the switch ranking.
The lowest I saw was 66th, and the highest I saw was 43.

Well, I was a little hesitant to double dip on this game at all, so when it went on a decent sale, I figured that was the perfect compromise.

I think I was being a little too harsh on the DLC for HGH. It's fine, and the other characters are fun to use. The main issue I have with HGH in general is just that I don't like the choice to go with a linear level design + lots of backtracking, and I think that was coloring my feelings on the DLC.



Marcus Sellers has a pretty mixed record from what I understand. Heavy third party representation certainly bodes well though, assuming this one's legit. If they are ramping up on third parties, at least one indie rep seems quite likely, and two seems pretty plausible. If you combine this with the assumption that they are relying on the Smash Ballot data to make decisions, then things are looking really good.




What are your guys' most wanted characters, aside from Shantae?

For me it is definitely King K. Rool. I like villains and big heavy characters, so he is right up my alley. Plus I have a lot of nostalgia for DK64, and to a lesser extent the classic DKC games. Beyond that I don't have any characters I am dying for. I would like to have Wolf back, and Shovel Knight would be cool too, so long as he doesn't take Shantae's spot.



EDIT: I just checked out that Nintendo Life top 10 most wanted characters video. I'm glad Shantae made his list, but I had to chuckle when he said that like Diddy Kong prior to Smash, she doesn't have that many moves to work with yet. I guess he needs to get a little further in Pirate's Curse, or try the original out. I seriously challenge anyone to name a potential newcomer who has as many moves to work with in their games as Shantae does.

King K. Rool is a definite must-have imo, like if you don't at least respect him then what the hell are you doing lol. Geno too (mainly because I think he deserves a chance in the spotlight and could definitely have a comeback in any Mario & Luigi games). Let's not forget the man, the LEGEND, Waluigi.
oh yeah, and Kunio too. much like Shantae he's been deeply rooted with Nintendo for a long, long while. since the NES days!

What are your guys' most wanted characters, aside from Shantae?

If we are talking first party, Its K.Rool followed closely by Waluigi,

But overall after Shantae is Proto Man, because hes my favorite Mega Man character. Clone of Mega or alt, ill take either.
And another Indie character i love, Gunvolt, I know we have a lot of animesque characters, but at least hes not a swordsman, and you can assault your enemies with Jpop.

and I would be happy with Shovel Knight.

I was actually thinking about that the other day. Anna is the only Fire Emblem character I would be excited for anymore. I love the Fire Emblem games, but the series is overrepresented, and the characters just don't hold their relevance very well. Anna is the one exception to that. She is much more the face of Fire Emblem in my mind than Marth ever could be. If she had made it into Melee instead of him, everyone would just take that for granted as obvious now. I seriously doubt they will ever consider her, unfortunately. We will probably just keep getting the latest protag for whatever FE game is next on the horizon.

He only had one signicant appearance in any game, and that was as a side character from one not very well known game more than 20 years ago. Is there a reason people want Geno so much, rather than Mallow, or one of Mario's partners from Paper Mario or Thousand Year Door? Or even characters like Birdo, or Tatanga, or Wart? What makes Geno stand out?

Ivr played it many times on my SNES and its because Geno has a cool design and a bunch of moves in the game people like and his role in the game while side characterish is a nice connection to the plot.

My memory's pretty hazy about all the details of why others want him in, but for me it's mainly because of his cool and unique design, alongside the fact that he starred in one of the damn best SNES games of all time (but hey that's just my opinion). Of course that can be applied to literally any other character that you just said, but I think what makes Geno stand out from the rest is his "cool and classic" feature to most. This lil' dude was a big hit in the Brawl days, and I think there was some talk of Nintendo wanting to include him in but Square Enix going "nah fam."
Personally though, I'd love him in as a rep of the Mario RPG series. He was in the very first one (and I personally think he deserves to be in more), though I definitely wouldn't argue if Mallow got in either.

Personally, I'd want someone from the mainline SMT series before we got a Playstation-exclusive rep in. I'd love to say Demi-fiend from SMT III, but it'd more than likely be Flynn, Natashi, Aleph, or the SMT I Hero since they're in Nintendo consoles. I think Xavier could do a damn good voice for most of 'em. Even more likely would be Jack Frost, since he's Atlus's mascot. Definitely wouldn't mind the Wright-er of wrongs (no? okay) in, though, even if it just a copy of his MvC move set. Then we could finally file a case against Wario for scamming everyone with his microgames.

For me it's Paper Mario, Dark Samus and Rayman. I've enjoyed the Paper Mario series and I would really like it if it got more representation. Plus I think Paper Mario has pretty good moveset potential. And Metroid needs another character, and personally I think Dark Samus would be a pretty good addition. (Well, besides you-know-who.) And I think Rayman would be a great addition as well. Plus since he has a trophy in Smash 4 I feel like he has a good chance this time around.

Yeah that would be a really strong sign. A similar but less dramatic one might be if WayForward announced that a big new Switch-exclusive Shantae game was in the works.

In terms of strictly Smash-related stuff, here are some other things I can think of that would be big positives:

WayForward's logo or involvement with anything officially Smash-related would basically be confirmation.

If we got a reliable leak that there will be multiple indie characters on the roster, that would be extremely positive. I think it's very unlikely Shantae wouldn't be one of them.

The most believable positive development I can think of would be Sakurai saying in an interview or tweet or something that he took heavy inspiration from the Smash Ballot votes, and has multiple surprising third party characters ready as a result.
