Working with exotic animals can be pretty dangerous, especially with huge ones like a whale.

Poor lady, getting killed doing what she love..

It's a shame, but hardly surprising.

It's the same as, say, Sigfried and Roy working with tigers. It's amazing that they are able to train and work with such animals, but ultimately they are giant carnivores with killer instincts (as we've seen numerous times).

Just goes the prove / show that animals are stil unpredictable.

BTW you should probably post links in the OP for newcomers / people who don't know about Shamu.

Which one got mauled by the tiger?

The way it's described, the whale was being playful. Orcas often wrestle eachother/push each other around in the water. Only problem is that you don't want to play rough with something so much huger than you.

It should be a law that everyone has to die doing something they love or something job related. Like if you're a train driver, you get hit by a train. And if you're Bear Grylls you get grilled by a bear.

Everything would be much cooler that way.

I wonder if anyone put it on youtube yet? It seems like everything ends up there now.
The news was showing several videos of the show before the whale jumped out. I'm sure there are several videos of the actual submerging but I'm gonna pretend I have decency and only watch said footage if someone else looks for it.

Free Willy, man.

Isn't this Shamu's third kill. They need to kill the darn whale.
I don't think the whale chose to be there.

"Don't kill" isn't a rule Nature recognizes. Domesticated animals come from generations of ancestors that grew alongside humans, but animals from nature don't come pre-disposed to form those types of bonds.

They could try training her (?) to fend for herself and set her loose. Problem is that a lot of animals raised in captivity have trouble learning those survival skills. It's like they can't stay, and yet they can't go.

I'm torn on whether I think they should free the whale completely, or if they have to, keep it in a less stressful, human-involved part of the park.

I really hope they don't euthanize it.

Well he's been in captivity since he was 2 so I'm pretty sure if he was released he'd be ****'ed.
And they shouldn't kill him cuz he's a 12,000 pound killer. Its a miracle he's ONLY killed three people

Except your wrong.
Cuz killer whales roll in packs. Think of this "Shamu" as a new pimp that rolls into town trying to steal the current pimp's ho's. How do you think that will turn out? Oh and by the way the new pimp is middle aged and from the suburbs.

The point is they've already screwed up his life. Give him a tank and leave him alone before he kills more people.

What people don't realize is that Orcas are INCREDIBLY smart, social animals that are PREDATORS. You don't see people touching Lions, Bears, etc the way they do with the dolphin family now do you?

Also, this orca ISN'T Shamu. His name's Tillikum, and he is an aggressive whale who accidentally killed once while a trainer was in the water with him and the other whales, and the second time was some guy snuck into seaworld at night, fell/dived whatever into the enclosure and died of hypothermia. The whale, played with his body.

Besides, whether it was an accident or not, if I lived in the tank he does and was his size? I'd freakin flip out. He'd kept separate from the others due to his aggressive nature, but he's a SOCIAL animal so he must be going nuts from that. No trainer is allowed to technically interact with him in his enclosure so of course once one got close enough he wanted to play. Look at this, he's in the small one on the bottom right.

It's sad for everyone, whale especially. This only furthers the reasons why cetaceans should NOT be kept in captivity. Hopefully the woman's death will bring more light to this fact and we can stop bringing in new dolphins captive. All research points to this fact D:

They probably get a better life in captivity than the wild, so I disagree with you there.
Survival in the wild may be more difficult, but don't forget that orcas are apex predators. They're at the top of the food chain.

Moreover, it's probably not the best thing for it to live in a tiny enclosure (compare their Sea World homes to the ocean), especially without social interaction in a pod. Captives probably live longer, but do they live better? In this case, I would say it's not so clear.

So are we going for a killtacular or are we finally going to put down the beast?

No they don't, it's documented that captive orcas and dolphins live much shorter lives and have health problems up the hooplah. In the wild orcas lives for an average of 50 years, in captivity you're lucky if the current Shamu makes it to 30.

Also keep in mind most of these orcas were once WILD. They were captured and brought into the Sea Worlds and other parks that keep them. Imagine you get to live in a mansion with your family then are kidnapped, thrown into studio apartment with some other guys who've had the same thing happen.

Honestly it's a wonder why these whales don't kill MORE often. The only aggressive behaviors documented towards humans happened in captivity. Gotta wonder why >_>

EDIT: Just like to add that Keiko, the whale who starred in all the Free Willy movies, died at the age of 27 due to pneumonia a year after they released him. His immune system was not strong enough due to all the years in captivity.

Sea World's already announced they will not kill Tillikum. He may be one of the smartest creatures on the planet but he does not know the consequences of his actions, especially when isolated for so long.

the ocean is pretty big, Orca's don't kill other orca's for fun or because their not part of their gang, he'd probably be be fine in the ocean, maybe even join a super pod or something lol.

(sigh) Don't people know by now that you have a 50-50 chance of getting killed by a killer whale.
Again, it's a wild animal. Whales can't be domesticated, so their instincts can get the better of them.

This basically goes for most animals shown on attractions, but yeah, these kind of jobs (from what I can tell) don't have a high number of fatalities.

It sucks how people who train animals sometimes get attacked by the animals they love.
I remember seeing this one Asian guy who was training an gator or crock during a performance when he reached his arm in there the animal bit down and spun its DEATHROLL like the guys entire for arm was disconnected from his elbow

I really can't find myself feeling sorry for these people. I'm no animal rights freak by any means but I think anyone involved in the exploitation of these animals for human entertainment should be well-prepared to have it turn around on them at any point, especially a huge and fierce thing like an Orca.

Well come on now, you would be pretty sad if you mom arms broke because she was a zoo worker. And besides i kinda don't like how everyone blames the victim for this kind of crap.

"She was wearing a low cut shirt, so she wanted it!" we waste our time blaming the victim when we should be asking

"Why is that crazy mofo a rapist!?!??!" but it seems in our society we have desensitized ourselves with theft, sex, and death (which is some serious ****)

>.> look im not saying like she dieing wasn't a occupational risk but, you should feel a bit of remorse when you hear about death.

Well, I agree with you that it certainly is a sad thing to have happen. But LT has a point too. There's no reason for these animals to be in captivity except for human amusement. If that business didn't exist, maybe that worker could have found a job doing something less dangerous.

Wait, there was more than one Free Willy movie?
