Yeah, people aren't voting for these characters to be in Smash, but I'll frame it in a Smash speculation context anyway. This poll had over 32,000 voters, so regardless, it's data worth taking into account.

Biggest Winners:

Waluigi: Nothing new, but his popularity is actually proven.

Shy Guy/Dry Bones/generic enemies in general: Shy Guy and Dry Bones did absurdly well, placing 8th and 12th respectively, and generic enemies are littering the poll. It seems like Sakurai might've made the wrong choice with Piranha Plant, although the point of Piranha Plant was how random it was anyway.

Funky Kong: Absolutely crushed Dixie Kong, albeit the context of this being a Mario poll makes that more dubious. He was the second most popular DK character only behind DK himself.

Toad: Toad is more popular than a significant amount of people would expect, especially with the vote split with his alternate versions. He was considered a rival in Smash speculation of the past of Bowser Jr., and he narrowly managed to defeat him even with vote split bogging him down.

King Boo: A high placing at 14th. He is often paired together as a secondary villain with Kamek, but he beat him very handily. With Luigi's Mansion getting a more significant push, maybe he could do something?

Vivian: The most popular Mario RPG character, narrowly beating out Fawful. Paper Mario is left behind in the dust. Could this be an alternative to having an alternate version of Paper Mario?

Fawful: The second most popular Mario RPG character and easily defeating Geno. With another Mario and Luigi game on the horizon, does a dormant Fawful fanbase have opportunity to swoop in?

Dimentio: Still a great showing beating Geno and being Mario RPG character #3, though he'd really have to beat one of Vivian or Fawful, preferably both, to fully take off.

Biggest Losers:

Geno: Needs more votes when he's supposed to be so popular - he was only the fifth most popular character from a Mario RPG.

Paper Mario: The sixth most popular Paper Mario character, behind Koops, Bow, Mr. L, Goombella, Dimentio, and Vivian. It's not even a matter of vote split either, there's a clear favorite to contest his title with Vivian...

Captain Toad: People regularly suggest Captain Toad to make Toad more unique, but he has roughly 5x less votes than regular Toad. For that matter, he's also behind Toadsworth and Toadette. Perhaps it's worth reconsidering whether to campaign for Captain Toad over generic Toad?

Dixie Kong: Funky Kong has a massive influx of votes over her, which you can credit to this being a Mario character poll specifically, but what's more notable is she also lost to Cranky Kong. You can say that Cranky is possibly more of a Mario character than her because of the Mario movie if that matters? Still, a disappointing result for her.

Wendy: Not Smash speculation related, but I had to highlight Wendy being so far behind her brothers despite the massive advantage of being the only female Koopaling. She even lost to Koopa Kid.

If Mario mooks in Smash becomes a new trend, I stand by the inclusion of Shy Guy.

Geno underperforming recently has been shocking to some people, especially after the Mario RPG remake.

Funky Kong over Dixie Kong is something I can see happening, with not much occurring with the DK series since Tropical Freeze.

King Boo is certainly in the running for being a future Assist Trophy.

I've been lurking a few of these polls myself and there are a few points that surprised me, with others not being as shocking. Geno in particular seems to have pretty heavy negativity in his results, and I can't help but disagree with that vibe. If anything, I'm surprised he got as high as he did in both this and the post-ultimate poll.

This could just be confirmation bias, but a lot of the discussion I see around Geno these days has mostly been mixed, even after the remake. Places like Twitter or Reddit or YouTube usually have one positive post about the character counteracted by another post from someone else putting him down. It's not as overwhelmingly bad as it was back when his mii costume was revealed, but it looks to me like the character is still a "sensitive" subject for people at best. Especially in Smash-centric communities.

With that in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of his more vocal fans just...aren't bothering to interact with these polls in the first place. There are a few streamers and video-makers I follow that pushed hard for Geno support way back and most of them haven't made a video mentioning him (or Smash) in months. Meanwhile I've seen a lot of content creators against him that have recently both pumped out plenty of videos on Smash and brought Geno up all by themselves just to keep making fun of him. To me, it seems like a lot of people on his side just aren't very encouraged to make it known these days.

Again, this could just be confirmation bias. I haven't been keeping count over every time he's mentioned across the internet, just sharing what I've seen. I'd be curious to hear if other people have wildly different experiences on what they've seen from others talking about him, especially recently. I always felt like I was in another dimension when I've seen people talking about how widespread his fanbase is, mostly from how much bigger the pushback was in my eyes.

As for the Schaffrilas poll, he doesn't really feel like he's losing out very much IMO. The only real big upset I can see there is him losing to Count Bleck. Outside of that, he's way higher than any other SMRPG character, and he's beaten out a lot of more mainstream characters like Captain Toad and the Koopalings. The poll itself was made just back in June, too, so a lot of hype for the remake (and subsequently Geno himself) has cooled down a bit. I'm more shocked that Paper Mario didn't manage to beat him out considering how recent The Thousand-Year Door was.

Finding out peoples favorite Mario characters is so fun. A lot of it is based on characterization/designs since most characters don’t really have consistent writing (or any writing for that matter) so it’s a pretty personal thing. I mean everyone has their Mario Kart mains and a lot of it is based on how people grew up with Mario.

I think it’s been known for a long time that Luigi is more popular than Mario because of his underdog status but I was still surprised Mario didn’t crack the top 5.

As a kid I always preferred Mario even though basically all my friends liked and preferred Luigi. Maybe it’s because I was an older child. I do prefer DK and Wario now tho.
