This year marks the 8th San Japan, San Antonio's biggest once-a-year anime convention. With over 14,600 attendees last year, we expect this to be our biggest event to date. This year will include just about every smash bros game including Melee, Project Melee, Brawl, and WiiU. With this being the first year for Smash WiiU, we anticipate at least 100+ entrants that doesn't include anybody from the competitive scene. We hope to see as much of Texas traveling to this as possible!

San Japan: 8-Bit (2015) will be located at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center & San Antonio Grand Hyatt Hotel & Marriott Riverwalk hotel in downtown San Antonio, Texas. It will be happening on July 31st – August 2nd, 2015. The Convention Center is directly next door to the Grand Hyatt. The hotel is nearby the Rivercenter Mall. Inside the Rivercenter Mall is a large food court with a large variety of low-cost eateries (less than 5 minute walk from the convention). Everything is at the heart of famous River Walk with the famous Alamo a short walk from the hotel.

Badges
San Japan is a 3 day Anime Convention and requires a badge to attend. The prices for badges:

Pre-registration is an option. Badges can be purchased at:
http://www.san-japan.org/reg/info

I HIGHLY recommend purchasing online! Pre-Registration allows you to:

  • A chance to skip the Registration line at the convention. Pickup your badge from the Pre-Registration line (with a valid, government-issued, photo ID or barcoded Confirmation email or PayPal receipt), which generally moves faster than the regular on-site Registration line.
  • Showing initiativeto get your badge taken care of now so you’re not fumbling with money when it comes time to get your badge or spending a long time in lines and less time actually enjoying the convention.
  • The ability to pick up your badge on Thursday night so you can enjoy the convention from the very beginning on Friday morning when it all starts. Can’t make it until Friday or Saturday? Rest assured, your convention badge will be there.
  • Receive a pre-printed badge showing your support. Let everyone know that you supported San Japan before this year’s convention even began.
  • Receive a guaranteed confirmation that you’ll be at San Japan. You will receive a custom receipt via e-mail letting you know that you have a badge waiting for you.

Smash

There will be no online registration to enter any smash game. HOWEVER, Those planning on entering can pre-register on Friday in the gameroom. This saves you the trouble of registering right before the tourney begins and there's a mass wall of players registering at the same time. That way you can enjoy the rest of your con experience without worrying about it.

Super Smash Bros Brawl

General Rules
  • Game Settings: 3 Stocks, 8 Minute Time Limit, Best of 3 Games. Finals are Best of 5.
  • Items are disabled.
  • Meta Knight’s infinite dimensional cape tactic is banned.
  • All other chain grabs and infinites are legal
  • There is a 35 Ledge Grab Limit for all characters. If a game goes to time and one player is over the Ledge Grab Limit, they automatically lose the game. If both players exceed their Ledge Grab Limit, then this rule is ignored.
  • The act of stalling is banned and constitutes intentionally making the game unplayable. Examples include becoming invisible, continuing infinites, chain grabs, or uninterrupted moves past 300%, and reaching a position that your opponent can never reach you.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
  • Pause option is disabled in the game menu. If left on, accidental pausing mid match forfeits a stock.
  • You may not choose the last stage you have won on during a set, unless agreed by both players.
  • If time runs outs and ledge grabs do not determine a winner, the tie is determined by most stocks, and then if still tied, by percentage.
  • If the match ends with both players dying at the same time coincidentally, or if time ran out with both players at equal percent, a one stock three minute rematch will be played on the same stage. For this tie-breaker match, a Ledge Grab Limit of 15 is used for all characters.
  • If a match is ended via suicide move, the initiator of the move wins.
  • Coaching is not allowed during a match

Doubles Rules
  • Team Attack enabled
  • Sharing stocks is allowed
  • If time runs out and a player is over the ledge grab limit, that team loses if no one on the opposite team is over the limit
  • If time runs out and ledge grabs do not determine a winner, the match is decided by the team with most stocks, and if still tied, by the team with lower total percent
  • If a player is using Pokemon Trainer, Lucario or Sonic, either team may request team colors to be changed to make it easier to tell the difference

  • The players play the first match of the set
  • Winning player of the preceding match bans a stage from the full list of stages, both Neutral and Counter-Pick. This ban is only chosen one and lasts for the entire set.

We need as many setups as we can possibly get!!!! CRT's and gamecubes/wii's for Brawl/PM/Melee as well as TV's and WiiU's for Smash4. Gamecube adapters are extremely important too. This event is going to get a ton of entrants for every game due to interest from con people. I cannot stress how important a setup is for San Japan.

I am in talks with San Japan staff about some sort compensation to those who can.

Probably already addressed but...

Will the new DLC be legal for the Smash Wii U tournament?

The Smash4 ruleset has been updated with the new DLC. Main changes are

  • Dreamland is now a Starter/Neutral
  • Lylat Cruise is now a Counterpick
  • Battlefield/Miiverse adapt the same scenario as FD/Omegas; banning one = also banning the other.

can you host brawl doubles?
Unfortunately I don't think it's possible. We're converting those setups to Project M as soon as Brawl Singles are over and having brawl doubles would prolong PM too long.

Brawl starts way too early for me to make it, wack. Unless I pull no sleep after work and Houston meets me at the venue.

Hey, me and a friend are going to enter Sm4sh Wii U doubles, but we'd like to point out that the day before doubles (July 31st) is patch day for the game. Will you have some offline Wii Us at the ready in case the patch ends up being a balance patch as well?

Nike, Slush, and I are volunteering and providing set ups and will be going to the venue tomorrow. We'll most likely not be going back to update our games on Friday, so most likely our 2~3 won't be patched.
Otherwise I'd suggested to my group to update ours if we got hotel wi-fi.

If we get our own room I might bring my laptop so I can check smashboards to see if the patch is a balance patch and such.
Otherwise, if it isn't then all that it brings outside of silly mii costumes is the peach's castle and hyrule castle stage. Which we'd need a week or two of discussing if we add either one of em or both to our ban list or not banned list.

Real talk (for Smash 4)- 10-player round robin pools on a single setup is the wrong way to go. It took 4.5 hours for my/jbandrew's pool to finish, which was a major pain when everyone was wanting to go walk around and enjoy the con. In the future, wouldn't it make more sense to do the pools in waves? IE- have the first four pools come and use 4 setups apiece, then the next four, etc.? Either that or just do bracket pools like EVO. Just my thoughts for future tourneys. Looking forward to bracket tomorrow!!

If people provided more set ups, sure. We don't exactly have the time to be doing waves cause Sunday is when everyone leaves and the gameroom closes at like 6. Which is why the 48 man bracket starts 9:30 today. What difference does it make having the pools being in waves. Even if one pool finishes faster, that's only 4 current pools playing (4 tvs for each one) and still would take forever cause 16 pools, only 4 going on right now.

We planned all day to be Pools anyways, if con monsters paid and didn't expect to be siting down all day playing smash, then they're free to leave. Makes pools faster for us, mine had 1 person that never showed up, 1 left after a single match, and 2 more after 4 or 5 matches.
So most people in my pool got a free 8-0 and went from 10 people to 6, dunno why the pool took 4+ hours. Before I left, K prime KJ and I's pools ended and set ups were open you guys or other pools still going could've easily used. I was in front of your pool and said Jband can use it after I was finished, if he didn't use it and the rest of yall didn't notice the empty set up that's all on you guys.

Otherwise we tried our best. We took peoples wii u's, Nike sucked many ***** to get peoples TVs Wii u's etc. Thursday, and we also took their set ups to update it FOR them at our hotel rooms since Nintendo was SO KIND TO RELEASE A PATCH UPDATE BEFORE THE WEEKEND STARTED Thursday/Friday night.
We were the ones on our feet and doing everything the past 3 days. We tried.

We don't have bottomless wallets sadly where we could've bought a trillion wii u's. 8 of the TVs is Nike that he saved 1k for last year to buy the flatscreens for us the community without him getting a penny from us, and the wii u's was at least 8 or 9 from SA smashers while I believe the rest was Fish house and the other SJ group that's not part of the smash part of the game room, so they helped out too.

tl;dr, we tried our best be glad we had 16. If you wanted it to be faster than bring your own set up and risk it being stolen just like us so we could've had 17 grand spanking set ups instead :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Waves would just allow for people to show up for specific 1-2 hour blocks instead of having to be there for the full 4+ hours. I will readily admit that I am not a TO, but from what I have seen, that's the way big tournaments tend to do it. I really appreciate all the effort that went into the tournament though, and I know from my experiences in Austin that it's not easy securing setups and running events even HALF the size of this one, so thanks a lot for making it a fun overall experience!

Waves would be fine, but the problem is that this is at a convention where a big chunk of the players are from the convention. They expect to start playing exactly at 3PM and not suddenly find out that they actually have to wait 2 hours to compete. Keep the con-goers somewhat satisfied keeps the convention officials we volunteer under happy. Otherwise other cases, yes, waves for big pools may be the way to go.

Granted that we had to bump the pool from 8 players to 10 due to the lack of safety nets. We capped 128 at the end of Friday. It would be wiser if we set a soft cap of 64 or such so that players that were only attending Saturday would get a chance to sign up as well for the final 128 cap. With Houston not arriving til Saturday put that big strain on Nike, and reluctantly made the decision to raise the cap to 160 and was willing to take the fall for it if things go sour.

I took the role as pool leader for K Prime's pool because he was still in Doubles. My group was really chill with each other and was cooperative. Even though we had 1 no show, and 2 drop outs, we just kept the games going and finished in 3.5 hours. However I did hear one pool had a bad case of multiple time outs. Now that put a sour taste in a 10-man pool.

San Japan is slowly giving us more and more control over the Smash section of the game room, so there's a lot more ways we can improve. Hopefully it'll be a lot more smoother next time around, though for how things went over a few bad conditions, I'd say it went well. Maybe great, maybe not, but well.

Well good to actually meet the MassKirbycide. I lurk the Austin thread so I'm glad I did a double take when signing you up for the tourney. Maybe next time, friendlies.

Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback; I hadn't really considered the limitations that come with being part of the convention. I really appreciate all the work that went into making this run fairly well! Bracket went smooth as butter this morning, so I'm a happy camper. Good tournament, hopefully I'll be able to get out to SA for another tourney sometime. I know we still have a really young scene, so it'll definitely help to get out and play with some of the big dogs in Texas.

Cheers y'all!

I had a great time at the tourney, and at San Japan of course. (I was the one cosplaying as Luffy from One Piece)
I was satisfied making it out of pools. Even though I only advanced one round in losers, it was still fun playing different people that know what they're doing with their characters. Thank you to all the volunteers and pool leaders and the people that brought setups! :4greninja:
