Russian Vladimir Ladyzhensky and his Finnish rival, Timo Kaukonen, collapsed after suffering severe burns. Mr Ladyzhensky later died in hospital.
The event requires participants to withstand 110C (230F) for as long as possible. The men managed six minutes before judges noticed something amiss.

They simply kept it for too long. None of the two was refusing to give up and this led to disasterous outcome.

Kaukonen (40) was 4 times champion in former editions, collapsed first and couldn't win but he survived, while Ladyzhensky (60) finally won his first and last time before dying later at hospital due to severe burns

Basically the white was more-or-less extreme peeling, while the green (probably more or less black) is the flesh starting to die from the burns, kind of like what happens in hypothermia but on the opposite side of the heat spectrum, either that or it's the major arteries and veins dilated in an attempt to get as much heat off as possible.

I can't believe people would actually risk their lives to be a Sauna Champion, I guess well being couldn't overcome competitve pride here. :urg:

This contest is plain stupid, it's like playing russian roulette almost. This should probably be in current events though.
the contest is not the problem, the problem is to not stop and give up when you should... like those two stubborn insane guys. An accident like this never happened

Reminds me of the time that lady drank herself to death to win a wii.
And I'd argue that it's both the contest and the contestants that are stupid.

May he rest in peace.

At first I misread "sauna" as "salsa" and was very confused.

Thanks for the pics...

As I sit in a hot stuffy room with no air conditioning....

If you look closely (I don't know why you would want to do this), it looks like there are dilated veins on the legs. The pink patches in other areas look like the outer skin layers have peeled off. The black/green lines seem to mark the line between the burned outer skin and the inner layers, and you can distinctly see the difference in color between the pink and the brown. It looks like third degree burns.

I've seen skin grafting surgery where the patient survived with worse surface level burns, but I think the problem here is that it's a steam room and the poor guy got "cooked" from the inside out.

I can't believe people would actually risk their lives to be a Sauna Champion, I guess well being couldn't overcome competitve pride here. :urg:
For some reason, now I think too of people who die playing video games.

And now I go to open a window. brb.

Yeah. I think the contest is definitely a huge problem, paired with insecure hetero male machismo. The contest is literally "whoever can stand being cooked alive longest wins", so what would you expect to happen eventually? I mean christ, the starting temperature is 110 Celsius

Well, as I said, the competition is not the problem. You can die from many competitions, you simply gotta use the common sense and give up at the right time if you can't stand it anymore... F1 drivers can kill themselves too if they are not careful. If they did not want to use common sense, thats his own problem if he got injured or died...
110ºC is not that extreme for saunas as long as you dont stay too much in there... Some of those contestants have trained in 140ºC !!

Comparing this as a competitive activity to F1 racing is like comparing five finger fillet to a variant where your objective is to hit your fingers and see who can stand the blood loss and shock of dicing tendons for longer.

One is a dangerous activity that CAN be lethal, but in an ideal scenario with all competitors at peak ability, would not. The other is an activity that will kill you if you do it for a long enough period of time, regardless of your conditioning or training. Worlds apart.

Saying "he should have given up" makes no sense, because the objective of the competition is to outlast your opponent, who in this case was probably seconds or minutes from an equally unpleasant death. This was absolutely inevitable, and the "sport" is absolutely the issue.

No, just no. The objective is NOT to outlast the opponent... is to last as much as possible until you can't stand it anymore... bad luck if your opponent last longer... There is no big prize for the winner anyway... those two guys were ridiculously stubborn
Maybe a better comparison would be an underwater holding breath competition. Would you hold it until you drown?

which part you didnt understand?

This is men's finals 2009:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI_-sMBKZuwhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30BNoy27cKs

as you can see everything is ok here, people get off when they cant stand it any longer, thats how it should've been but instead those guys went crazy about winning and paid a big price for it.
Actually, no. The main problem was that the sauna used this year was more extreme and hotter than any previous one. This is the organizer's fault, not the contestants.

I knew about that... But should it make the conestants get off earlier? Instead, they were twice the time of 2009 (from 3:30 to nearly 7 minutes) That doesnt seem to make sense.

Edit: It seems the CHEATED as the contest organizers are suspecting. They (Ladyzhensky and Kaukonen) proably used some anti-heat cream or even some painkiller. Not good :/

Wait? A person died and another was fatally injured and you're worrying about whether or not they were cheating? nice.
Yeah, this.

I mean, I agree that the cheating was bad, but for health reasons because it involved painkillers. Pain is your friend. Pain tells you when to quit. Probably the combination of the drugs and the hotter sauna did them in.

But given the heat the contestants were subjected to, drugs or not, it's possible they weren't capable of thinking clearly anymore or making decisions. People who suffer heat stroke can become disoriented or have hallucinations. Maybe those guys would have quit earlier but were unable to do so because the heat was making them confused. The organizers should have stopped it sooner.

u got it wrong lol

El Nino explained it further

Painkillers are indeed a killing device for a contest like this

I was reading up on the rules for the contest. The judges/organizers require the contestants to give them a 'thumbs-up' signal every now and then to let them know that they (the contestant) are still in a proper state of mind. The guy who (later) died did not do that, which is what tipped them off that something was wrong.

Anyway, I agree with what Nixxxon's been saying.

Yes, the organizers used saunas that were hotter/extremer than in previous years. However, it is the contestant's responsibility to know when he or she has had enough. It's their responsibility to "tap out" when they've had enough, as it can be fatal otherwise (clearly). Also, whether or not the contestants used painkillers can help them figure out who was at fault. If the contestants were in fact using painkillers, it would shift the blame onto them as opposed to the organizers.

Ultimately, I think a contest like this is stupid to begin with, but the contestants knew what they were getting into. Irresponsible as it may be for the organizers to promote an event like this and use a more 'extreme' sauna, it is ultimately the contestant's responsibility to look out for their own safety and well-being.
