Exclusive: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?

We've just received some exclusive news and specs on the Wii 2 via Logic-Sunrise.com) (though a Nintendo of France marketing employee). The leaked specs denote the Wii 2 will get a Blu-ray drive (mainly to stop piracy), but will also support 1080P for games as well as movies. The new system is due out during the third quarter of next year and there will be the option to trade in old Wii's!

Please note the above image is just for illustration purposes.

More details below (translated from French):

This is a nice exclusive we have here at MaxConsole courtesy of Artik from www.Logic-sunrise.com on the Wii 2. The actual information is said to have been leaked from an internal source of the marketing Nintendo France Service. Unlucky for them, this kind of information should stay internal, but that's not our philosophy.

- The Wii2 system will feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy.
- 1080P and lower resolutions will be supported, for blu-ray movies and games.
- The release date is scheduled for third quarter of 2010.
- The release will be worldwide and on the same day for all countries.
- A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2.

Moreover, Nintendo wants to make a worlwide annoucement, only one month before release date. Huge publicity and Viral Marketing will be utilized to create the Buzz. Official pictures are not yet available, and more specs will be released in due course.

Why do we believe it at all ?

* Artik from Logic-Sunrise.com has regularly provided news to MaxConsole and has a lot of 'insider' contacts.

* Nintendo has suggested that it's time they embraced high definition technology for the Wii and Blu-ray has firmly established itself. So a Wii 2 with Blu-ray support does make sense.

This to me just seems.... unlikely. The Wii itself is still selling well after all this time. Plus, next year, we have Super Mario Galaxy 2 and hopefully Zelda Wii coming out. With its two biggest series releasing games on the Wii, and the Wii Motion+ having been out for less than a year, I just can't see them putting out a surprise new console a year from now.

Nintendo of France employee leaks the information? I suppose that's more believable than if it was a NoA employee (those liars..). But alas, this news is fairly old as various "insider sources" have hinted towards a "High-Def Wii" over the past year or so. Guess we'll have to wait for E3 for true confirmation because Nintendo most likely won't unveil it before then.

Wii 2 + Zelda Wii (meaning it could be in 1080p) = best move Nintendo could pull.

I'm still doubting the validity of this however.

It could be a trade-in, or something like the X-Box 360 Elite - a better version of the regular system. If it's a completely new system, I'll actually be pretty mad; I figured I'd get more time before having to shell out hundreds more to stay on top of gaming market.

Well, if they could continue developing games that could be played in both 1080p (Wii 2) and 480p (Wii), then the Wii 2 would be for those who wanted it. I'm sure most casual players who don't care about the best possible gaming experience would stick with the Wii, while people like myself who want to see Link and Ganon going at it in top notch quality would buy the Wii 2 without a doubt.

This scheme business of trading in your current wii for a new one seems very un-nintendo. What would they even do with so many wiis?

But honestly, I think it's an interesting idea. It sounds kind of like the current dsi model - a slightly upgraded, fully backwards-compatible console that generates buzz and doesn't hamper sales of the ds lite.

edit: if it is real, zelda will almost certainly be its launch game. Just like the TP was a GC/Wii game this can be a wii/super wii game and probably does the best job of promotion.

Wow, I have been extremly skeptical of this, but if they pulled a move like you are talking about where the games could be played in either HD format or standard format, that would make sense and would be much more down a Nintendo manner of thinking, similar to the DSi, upping the specs but allowing the game to play both with and without the DSi extra power.

DISCLAIMER: This post is made with the assumption that this is, in fact, 100% true. I'm still skeptical about it, I'm just discussing the ramifications of this possibility.

I would say it seems un-Nintendo to add on Blu-Ray capabilities and go all HD, but then again, nothing seems like what Nintendo used to be anymore.

To be perfectly honest, if this is just an upgraded Wii with HD graphics, I'm not going to get it. I don't really want to spend that much money on a system that brings nothing new to the table but graphics and movie-playing.

I hate to say it, but it seems like Nintendo is doing more and more of the things I always respected them for not doing. Even excluding their new direction regarding their audience, they're adding all of the extra non-game crap. The DSi has music, photos, apps (as opposed to games), and took out the GBA backwards compatibility.

Now we have a new console whose big features are a Blu-Ray player (not just a movie-playing device, but an HD movie-playing device) and HD graphics, when they always gained my respect by not focusing so much on graphics. Either it's a totally new console with very little new features brought to the table, or it's a small console that's released entirely for Blu-Ray and HD capabilities.

Don't forget the upgrade to the already non-game-focusing DSi which features a larger screen and...oh wait, that's it. (The longer battery life already existed on DS, they just got rid of it and then brought it back.)

.../extreme pessimism about Nintendo

If I see updated graphics and backwards compatible I'll buy this.
I'm guessing yes to both, along with an SD slot so you can transfer data across consoles (so I'm transferring my wii game data to my SD card, then deleting my old wii memory (after double checking), sending in the wii, getting the wii 2, and profit)

Now nobody can claim that Nintendo is behind on graphics.

Firius we don't even know how much of a new system this is.
This could very well come with a few major things

Controllers with Motion Plus aka what the system was suppose to do in the first place
A real hard drive
among many other things.

Assuming this is real, then you can't make the assumption that this is all the new system is about. When a sequal is announced, do we automatically assume that the information is all we will recieve when it is released? No, we expect the information to only be a tiny tease. When the wii was announced, we only knew it would be 2 times more powerful than the gamecube and would be able to run old games based on a DLC based service. That was it. Look at how far it ended up being from that original stretch of information, regardless of your opinion of the wii.

What is the difference between the Gamecube versus the N64 other than Graphics and a non-****ty controller and the switch over to disc? What was the difference from Nintendo to Super Nintendo other than better graphics?

The change to Blueray is a huge one, because everything with do in video games is limited to one thing, memory. Not neciessarly save memory, but ability to store all types of data be they temp files in the system itself or be they files in the disc. How good your graphics are, how smooth your game runs, how well executed everything is is limited to the memory. Other than human error, we are limited by memory, other wise we would have had the graphics we have today on the N64, the only thing holding us back was memory. As we saw from the jump from N64 to Gamecube, memory makes a huge difference in gameplay design execution, just compare Golden Eye to Metroid Prime. From the graphics to the physics to soundtrack, everything was improved simply by memory (and of course Rareware being an amazing company).

The one month release date is odd, as I'm sure you are going to point out, but that isn't to say that this isn't a whole new system. It is not called Wii HD or Wii Blue Ray, which would suggest an upgrade more, but it is called Wii 2. Both of these, the name and the idea of releasing it so quickly after unveil, they are likely to change, as no one is more apt to delay something than Nintendo, lest we forget OoT. Though because of the success of the Wii, just like the first system the Nintendo, I doubt they will change the name for marketing purposes and it will probably included the name Wii somewhere in the title.

Now, a quick look at consol generation gaps.

1985- Nintendo Entertainment System
1990- Super Nintendo
1996- Nintendo 64
2001- Gamecube

So we have a 5-4 year gap between consoles. Then its not a stretch to imagine that we might have a console revealed next year at the least. I'd find it rather amazing if it does come out next year as well with new games, as it is possible that the new Zelda is made for this game, as despite Nintendo insisting it will come out next year they have showed us nothing more than concept art.

As for your claim of Nintendo doing what they useually don't do. That's not true at all. You are looking at the past with tinted glasses my friend. How many stupid updates did the Gameboy receive before getting a full update? And as I have stated before, this appears to be a new system, not a rehash.

this is not going to be a ''proper'' new console.

Nintendo aren't stupid enough to cannibalize one of the best selling consoles of time. If this rumour is true, it's going to be an upgrade like DSi to the DS.

I doubt the console will be a WII. If any thing Nintendo will add a new "Gimmick" to make this a entirely new console. If I remember Nintendo was doing something with holographic storage. I can see the next console, the WII or what ever they will name the new console using this.

Yeah, no hypothetical topics. While this has some credibility in terms of sources, it's still rumored, and until it's official, no topics on it.
