I don't give a flying piece of crap about "deserving." If we're going by merit, we wouldn't have Ike, we'd have Toad. We wouldn't have Marth, we'd have Bowser Jr. We wouldn't have Sheik, we'd have Waluigi.

What matters is having the best roster based on who would be the most fun, unique, and interesting to play based on how their movesets, platstyles, and skillsets work in regards to the roster (ie: not having two characters that do the same exact thing; yes, clones can not do that, and non-clones can do that).

All the characters minus Chrom and Toad could be unique, sure. But that's just 7 characters. I won't debate Mewtwo, K. Rool, Ridley, but Palutena is arguably less unique than Shulk potentially. Heck, I don't think it's a question actually that Shulk is more unique in the regards I listed than Roy and Dixie Kong. The same is true with Bowser Jr.

This is coming from a person who loves, loves, loves DKC2 and thinks Fire Emblem 6 was one of the best in the franchise and who has not even played Xenoblade Chronicles.

So if by "dserving" you mean stupid fanboy polls, you can wipe your butt with that list, because "deserves" to me is who adds to the gameplay.

Being important or a main character gets you considered; being better than the not picked characters in terms of gameplay potential gets you playable. That should be what you mean by "deserving," because gameplay trumps all.
Dude, chill. I did said in my original post that I could very well be wrong and then asked for an explanation on his abilities in another post. I'm not trying to attack you at all, I'm just trying to have a decent conversation, k? Let's try this again:

What is interesting bout him, exactly? I am legitimately asking. He just looks like a generic fantasy protagonist to the onlooker, so I'm curious about what he actually does.
EDIT: Ninjas are fun.

You don't want to antagonize a fan boy. They will reciprocate their misconstrued hatred. Like a Jigglypuff reading 50 Shades of Grey.

I sure hope not. I don't want her in this game.
Why would you not want one of the best dozen or so characters moveset-wise to return=???

Jiggz is unique, crazy, sticks out, easy to develop, cheap to develop, and most importantly is fun to play as and against at all levels.

Why wouldn't you want them to cut Jiggz and replace them with Mewtwo of all characters, who had an abysmal moveset in Melee=????

I dunno about you guys, but I'll take tried and true character over one with a wonky past in terms of how they played any day of the week, especially since Mewtwo was developed by easily the best smash bros development team ever (sorry Brawl development team, but Smash 64 and Melee are just vastly superior and more enjoyable games).

I agree with this 100%. Like a Jigglypuff approving America's budget.

Well Shulk was definitely 100% considered. That alone means he has a chance.
There was no statement from Sakurai saying he considered him. Only that he like tweeted something related to it.

And considering the pool of characters isn't strong.
What does that mean?

really, there's no reason not to add him
I can actually think of a few

especially given how amazing he could be to play as given his moveset, skillset, and playstyle potential, which in the end is what gets a character playable.
Lol no. Like Mario didn't get in because he's the mascot, he got in cuz of his moves. And Fox was added because of that awesome move set he didn't have.

 An argument between Baby Mario & Luigi and Waluigi is when you know Mario additions aren't worth giving the slightest **** about anymore, not that I have a problem with the latter being added at least.

Don't think I've seen you around before Xaltis. Nice to meet you... and I like the anime your avatar is from. And don't mind Morbid's Jigglypuff fandom/obsession.

I like the anime too. Lots of T&A or as Jigglypuff would call it Jiggly&Puff.

Waluigi > Baby Mario and Luigi. Unless Ice Climbers got cut or something.

To be fair, both Toad and Bowser Jr. are more deserving than either of those characters, so it's not like that argument actually shows anything about Mario newcomers.

I don't give a flying piece of crap about "deserving." If we're going by merit, we wouldn't have Ike,
You realize Ike was one of the only 3 Protagonists to get 2 games and was basically the second most popular protagonist. That's NOT deserving? What you give a crap about is not what Sakurai gives a crap about.

No, that actually isn't what matters. Sorry. Playing as the best and most important Nintendo characters is. Heck King K. Rool would be interesting to play as, but he's probably not getting in over Dixie.

"deserves" to me is who adds to the gameplay.
That's VERY rarely what matters to Sakurai, and when it does the character is still deserving in the other areas.

Being important or a main character gets you considered; being better than the not picked characters in terms of gameplay potential gets you playable.
Other way around.

That should be what you mean by "deserving," because gameplay trumps all.
Right, Vaati would be funner to gameplay than Toon Link so **** Toon Link, he's not deserving because he doesn't add as much to the gameplay. Gameplay certainly does NOT trump all. I don't care if Smash was the sharpest fighting game ever, I'm not ****ing buying it if it doesn't have all those great Nintendo characters.

Not what I said. I said I am positive Shulk is being considered. Then again, I think the smash development team considered at least 100-200 characters, if not up to 400 characters, and gradually took that number down. There's no way in those numbers they would consider Shulk. There's just no possible way.
What does that mean?
All the characters people really want to play for (ie: dying to play for) are already playable. The only big-ish name from the Brawl days who hasn't been playable yet are the Miis, Ridley, and K. Rool. That's it.
Lol no. Like Mario didn't get in because he's the mascot, he got in cuz of his moves. And Fox was added because of that awesome move set he didn't have.
Mario got in because he's a mascot who happens to have off the chart playstyle potential, which actually both go hand in hand. The same is kinda true with Fox (although he kinda fights like an Arwing).

Go down the list of top Nintendo characters, and you'll find that their uniqueness is a big reason why they are so popular.

That wasn't my complete roster. Hell it wasn't even a full wish list. But the way I see it, it'd be best. Now I feel like a horrible person for earnestly feeling that way and not trolling.

I didn't like Sonic in Brawl. For me, it came down to the lack of diversity in his special moves, then again how diverse could he be, y'know... then I saw a god forsaken mod of Yang in SFIV mixed with sonic and truth be told, THAT to me made more sense than the brawl moveset. And I personally don't want to see Melee clones returning for a third time, and still not becoming their own full character.

FLUDD is neat enough to try once, but stupid. I'm not even going to try and back that up. Rip me apart there, IDC.

I remember reading that Sakurai was in the crowd when the game was announced and that he hadn't known before that point. I also remember reading some where that he didn't like it when people asked him about a sequel as soon as a game he worked on was released, when we know is the trend over here. So I can't help but feel that even though he's putting his blood sweat and tears into this, there's at least one percent of him thinking "God d@mn it all" Back when brawl was in development, i thought he was all in, but think back... maybe that 1% was there too. After all, MK and tripping.

So say this is the last one. Let's just say. I would love to see more realistic characters pop up, more diverse movesets, characters who were once straight up clones completely redesigned. I mean, it'd GANONDORF! One time as I Falcon Clone I can understand, but twice? He's Nintendo Legendary! There was a time I thought they couldn't make a Zelda game without him [boy did they prove me wrong] That's what I would like, but bottom line, since they're working from scratch, is it so ridiculous to expect something new?

Make this franchise cousin to Kart and party, go ahead. The cousin who you learn as you grow older isn't as cool as you thought growing up. Add Waluigi and Toad. Add this Shulk guy everyone keeps talking about. Add Lloyd Irving, who I personally think Cless would whoop anyday of the week. And Palutena who is a GOD! King K. Rool and even Pokemon Trainer Brock who only brought an Onix and a Geodude who only knows Rock Polish, but please change it up for entry number four.

The upside to smash is that something has started. You've got that weird dude working on Air Dash Online. Sony attempted to step into the arena, and people are making Brawl Mods left and right. Aside from how I feel about this new Mugen, I'm glad people are giving it attention. I'd just like to see something different...

Unless they're holding out for separate Fire Emblem and Pokemon only Smashes with RPG elements each with their own unique system mechanics d@mn I talk too much

Vatti's eye form wouldn't function as a playable character. And his humanoid form is more or less more limited than Toon Link.

Again, being a popular and/or important character (in a big franchise) and/or main character in a Nintendo franchise will get you considered (Vatti isn't that, but Toon Link is), but standing out amongst the crowd gets you in. This often goes hand and hand with popularity, since people are drawn to the unique and/or memorable, not more of the same. Hence why the roster in Brawl was so diverse, as are our 3 confirmed Smash Wii U and 3DS newcomers.

I actually agree with this sentiment. Sakurai might like to pretend that the moveset matters, and it does, but only after the main/important roles are fulfilled. He is trying to make the game fun for a plethora of different people. While some characters might be more fun to play than others, it is more wise to choose the recognizable character. Let us not forget that ANY characters moveset can be completely invented and fun. It doesn't need to be generic. The moveset selection is very malleable. Like a Jigglypuff making clay bowls for its mother.

Right, Toon Link being small Link is a big reason why he's so popular. Because being smaller and faster Link is SOOOO unique.

........What? The eye form would be a Final Smash and how is his humanoid form more limited than Toon Link!?!?!?

That's actually not true. C. Falcon, Fox, and ROB did not have a unique, potential, stand out move set. They got in because they were deserving and then Sakurai GAVE them a move set that would stand out. Again, I also didn't see all those more unique Zelda characters get in over Toon Link

They're obviously not wanted enough if Baby Mario & Luigi and Waluigi are argued about at any point over them. :smirk:

The manga is better than the anime. Uncensored, and (being completely serious) has an actually decent plot.
The manga of a series is usually always better than the anime; that's nothing new. In concept High School's not as much my cup of tea as other series I would really go out of my way to read manga-wise like Rosario + Vampire or something, but was still a decent watch. Good to hear the manga version's story is more serious though at least.

Think of characters like medicine. People like medicine that tastes good.

However, just because chocolate tastes good doesn't suddenly make it medicine.

On the flip side, medicine that is bitter can get the job done, but it doesn't taste good.

So, companies make medicine that tastes good.

Now let me rephrase that with characters.

Think of characters like this. People like unique and enjoyable characters that truly do matter outside of Smash (whether by being a main character of a game/series, or by being a very major character in a major franchise).

However, just because a character is unique doesn't suddenly make them truly matter.

On the flip side, characters that truly do matter can get the job done, but that doesn't mean they are unique and enjoyable.

So, the smash bros development team makes a roster full of characters that are unique and enjoyable that also truly do matter outside of Smash.

I still think Paper Mario is the better choice. I mean it's like Zelda, you have the 3 Main Characters and the Child version of the main character. Where does this 5th person fit in? I think that because Mario has so many different forms and we got the Doctor one before, that Paper Mario makes the most sense. I mean if we didn't get Toad, why Bowser Jr? (also even though Bowser Jr being a semi-clone is outrageous it's likely how Sakurai would see him.)

Right, Toon Link being small Link is a big reason why he's so popular. Because being smaller and faster Link is SOOOO unique.
He's unique in how he plays. He's fun, fast, and he's got a crap ton of potential to be unique. All you gotta do is see gameplay footage of the Wind Waker to see that he could have some seriously unique sword fighting tricks up his sleeves.

Plus unlike Link, people can actually play with him and win against someone who isn't ridiculously less skilled than them!
........What? The eye form would be a Final Smash and how is his humanoid form more limited than Toon Link!?!?!?
Because the humanoid form doesn't use as many attacks. His moves are much more limited in the Minish Cap than Toon Link's are in the Wind Waker (and Phantom Hourglass, and I guess technically all other Links moves to an extent as well).

Also, notice my point: you don't even debate Vatti doesn't matter in the long run, because he doesn't. He hasn't appeared in about 8 or 9 years, and barely anyone cares, even though there hasn't been a Zelda game better than the Minish Cap since then (in my opinion at least).
That's actually not true. C. Falcon, Fox, and ROB did not have a unique, potential, stand out move set.
See: blank slate characters.

Captain Falcon is essentially a power ranger, Fox is basically an Arwing turned into a character, and ROB... is well... a campy outdated robot!

I'm more inclined to go with John here.

For this Smash game at least.

What you can bring to the table (and possibly popularity) seems to be what Sakurai is mainly looking at here when he chooses newcomers.

That or he's just going with series that make millions. :troll:

That is why I worry about Bowser Jr. Sakurai might just see him as an easy semi-clone. I doubt he would give him the paint brush. It is the same kind of thing with Krystal. I doubt she would get the staff if she made it into Smash 4. That isn't to say that they can't have original and fun movesets without their iconic weapons. I just don't think Sakurai would spend the time to make them unique. Like with Toon Link. I could be wrong though. Sora Ltd. did a good job with Wolf (minus the final smash). Then again, they probably worked extra hard to ensure that Wolf wasn't a clone because Falco was already a clone. It would be ridiculous to have two clones.

Right Fox's moves are limited, so he's not getting in.

That's my point, you are saying having a unique move set gets you in and that you "don't give a crap about being deserving"

Captain Falcon is essentially a power ranger, Fox is basically an Arwing turned into a character, and ROB... is well... a campy outdated robot!
But, they didn't start out this way. They got in for being iconic and then they got their move set.

So, the smash bros development team makes a roster full of characters that are unique and enjoyable that also truly do matter outside of Smash.
Yes, but having a unique move set from the start does not get you in. Being the deserving character does and then you get that unique and diverse move set.

Ice Climbers got into smash over several NES characters that were as popular or more because they had more move set potential
I will say Sakurai could probably give a move set to anything if he tried hard enough

But they were still deserving. The point I'm trying to make is that being deserving is important where as John is claiming it isn't.

This is something i'd always thought about but never asked anyone. Out of all of the characters in the game, who do you think has the blandest moveset? I personally think magic users and the earth bound kids have alot of originality. Samus and her little explosions are great little effects. Even Peach whose not really known for doing much had one of the most original and devastating movesets...

But I swear to god if Marth is not the most boring character. With the exemption of dancing blade which is rarely used, it's just 'i swipe my sword'. And it's not that dancing blade is bad. It's simply that... swinging that sword tip is usually the fastest strongest option. It's hassle free. And most of his attacks are precisely that, simply in a different direction.

Now Ike on the other hand, that guy had some diversity. A big sword, and he wielded it oddly by comparison but he got the job done. uptiltlol

I disagree, actually. Not always, but leaving more to the imagination tends to be more enticing to me.

Pointless censoring, on the other hand..

But, yeah if "X" is affiliated with XenoBlade I'd consider Shulk to be pretty dang likely.
Edited:

Well you can count that Xenoblade is now a important part of Nintendo history for many reasons.

1. Its the representation of the acquisition from Nintendo to get Monolith Soft as a 1º party or 2º party (I don´t remember which is). Why is this important?

Because not every day Nintendo buys a Big Studio, not even the companies like Capcom or even Konami does that. Is like buying a new house for a normal person.

2. The union between these two companies make one of the best games of the last generation (rated by many people and media as one of the best games from Wii and one of the best JRPGs that have existed). I've seen a lot of games in the past that were some of the best in their generation. And those series have still been continued.

You can say that now those games are considered part of the history of say companies, the same is happening with Xenoblade.

3. The first game to be conceived after Nintendo acquired Monolith Soft (correct me if I´m wrong). Why is this important?

Because is the celebration of getting a new house and is a success for both parties.

4. Main title and flagship of "Project Rainfall". Why is this important?

Because it was huge a project, where not only Nintendo decide to listen to the fans but because they found that these type of games are still requested from the West, without the fan demand probably the series will be smaller and "X" will not be one of the biggest flagships for WiiU but now with the success of "Project Rainfall" the series will get more publicity and be a game where the media and the general public will be waiting, probably a system seller too. All that for the success of the project.

5. Have a spiritual successor in "X" (the series will be continued). Who said the game was Xenoblade?

Is not a sequel of Xenoblade but a spiritual successor, like F-Zero to Mach Rider, Mega Man X to Mega Man, Dark Souls to Demon Souls, Prince of Persia (the new one) to Prince of Persia (the trilogy from the GameCube era).

6. Almost sold out in the North America region ($80 dollars for a copy, ouch!). So have a lot of Nintendo games.

Not really one of the highest acclaimed games from Wii is Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and they haven´t sold out the same can be said about The Last Story and Pandora´s Tower. Not many games can get this success in a short time like Xenoblade did.

7. Cult classic by now. So are a lot of Nintendo games.

But which games are left that have the success of Xenoblade and are not represented in the series as playable characters.

8. Will be a big series in the future, in the same level of Fire Emblem or even more (this is my speculation but seeing the massive fan demand and "X" in the process it seems that it will get bigger with time and future entries). If Xenoblade gets a sequel I'd agree with you, but "X" is not confirmed to be affiliated with Xenoblade.

Spiritual successor, not a sequel but a spiritual successor.

Like THEM? Hell No!
Have you played the game to give that answer or is only your personal opinion?

I am mostly judging him on his design. He is unattractive and ugly. Haha. I have never played the game, I didn't even know it existed until everyone and their mother started requesting Shulk. I usually enjoy your opinion. Do you think Shulk is a good character choice? If you do, I might change my opinion on him and give the dude a chance. Not everyone is gifted enough to have immaculate hair like Jigglypuff.

Maybe the design is not appealing for you, but don´t forget that looks is not everything and you need to get in the inside of things to get a much better opinion. For my personal opinion playing the game, I can tell you that I did enjoy of what I have play that is almost 1/3 of the game, I have spent at least 70 hrs on it and for now I can tell you that game design wise is very interesting I haven´t played many JRPG´s but this one has unique feel that not other game has, it has a system combo that a simple look it can be easy but with the progression of the story, the character development story wise and the grow of the abilities mixed with the scale difficulty of the enemies each time you progress to next area of the game, make it really complete and from being simple it becomes such a hugh thing, is the type of game where is easy to pick up but hard to master. Lets say the gameplay is more of a action/adventure with a mix of traditional RPG (turn based abilities), it seems odd but is a thing that you need to play to feel it.

In the regards of the characters they are really interesting some of them with unique traits and designs where each character is hard to forget, by the way not all of them are perfect so that makes a plus, with the progression of the story you will be able to costume not only the abilities, powers and attack patterns of your characters but many of the armors that you get in your adventure change the looks of the character (weapons, armor, pants, head pieces and shoes).

Story wise is not the best story of world but it has some twists that you don´t expect and even feel sadness, joy, hope and intrigue for the characters and how will they react to a given situation, even to the point of continuing the story to know more and what happens next with characters. I say the main story is not the most intricate puzzle ever (at least until 1/3 of the game of what I play) but lore wise is huge and side quests makes the game extremely massive to the point of forgetting the main quest for hours and hours and the best part is that every extra quest that you do, in some ways change the relationship of a character to another character or the main party (it has so much detail that is ridiculous what much effort Monolith Soft put on this, making it worthwhile complete every quest that you get a cross).

Music wise what I can say, one of the best that I have hear in a long time.

Bosses and enemies are so different in each area and every creature has different pattern that every battle you start with a new enemy will be unique, design wise some of them are wacky, others are massive, you have the big ones and the small ones, you have the uglies and the pretty ones, there are many, some of them count as secret bosses so is worth to explore each corner to found them (most of them have high difficulty so is better to leave them and come back later in the game with more abilities so the game has a very unique feel of progression that make it worth all the time that you have spend playing).

In other words the game has so many things going for it that even what I wrote in here can´t compare as to what is playing it, I haven´t make justice to game, seriously if by chance you have the option of playing try for a few hours, it has something that i can´t describe with words (maybe is the magic of the game).

Oh forgot about Shulk as a character, the thing with Shulk is that you spend so many hours with the character that at the end you get to feel sympathy for him and what he is doing to save and understand what is happening with his world, by the way he is not the simple hero that is a idiot and rush at every opportunity against a enemy (well sometimes) but with the progression of the story you see how the character grows and start learning that every action you make it will get consequence, so at least changes in many ways and feels that at least the character make progress.

I'm not Morbid, but I'll answer, too.

In my opinion, there are simply more deserving characters to be (re)added from other series (Mewtwo, King K. Rool, Ridley, Dixie Kong, Palutena, Toad, Bowser Jr., Chrom, Roy) that take priority over Shulk. I could very well be wrong in my point of view, but that's what I think.

Well I´m not against those characters to enter the roster for the new Smash, but if Sakurai is thinking to add new series to inject some new blood to Smash, I think Shulk is one of the best options because what it represents, the potential moveset / gameplay, his character and his game will be big (stages, items, assisst trophies, music and many more things). And adding reps that already have their series represented is not as beneficial as adding a new franchise as whole, lets take Snake as example, adding him did give Brawl a different feeling and give a unique and distinct view of the game for many people, not only that it give a great gameplay with his moveset, add a level that many people like, his music was awesome and the relation with each character give him so much personality and the other characters too (the info that receive from each character make laugh a lot XD). So if you count this, adding a new series to smash gives it more points and add much more to the game than adding another rep from the series that we have already (they only add a new gameplay).

Finally I finished to answer, sorry for the late response but english is not my first language and it took me a lot of time to put in order all my ideas.

I dunno, not any hate really on JigglyPuff, just kinda tired of her. Unless her rest is the same as in Melee then I will be okay with her being in Smash 4 cause it'll be cool~

And nice to meet you Ridely Prime

The other ones can maybe be argued, but Shulk is in no way comparable to Mario.

Also the question if he's an All-star will will be personal opinion even if he'd played it.

Alright, I'm making a Roster that will be based on the ideas of everyone in this thread, and we'll try to make the most realistic roster. We'll do debates and whatnot, but right now, how big should the Roster be? And how many characters of each series should each have? (Like Mario should have 5, Mother should have 2, etc.)

I read shulk left and right and i find it odd everyone wants she hulk in brawl 2. than i do a little research and sign super heavy. I dunno what it is, but something inside me for years has kept me from having anything to do with JRPG's outside of the ones i grew up with. maybe it's 2d over 3d, maybe it's the sankakucomplex over there, but... the way things are marketed on that side of the pond, and the focus points that some products hit don't match up personally for me. don't get me wrong, theres sadly a ton of stuff over here i don't get behind either, but moreso over there, save for fighters, and a small junk of them at that. i feel happier nowadays playing indie and pc games, or working on building a stupid pointless collection that games with level 9999 and maid outfits and...

TLDR Shulk is short for She Hulk, Me and Japan stopped flirting years ago; it wasn't love, it was infatuation.

I didn´t say Shulk is in the league of Mario (hell no one is), but as a series that has a bright future in Nintendo, a series that put a mark in a console, a series that was a huge success in East and in the West, a series that proves that with a huge demand a company will listen to their costumers and will bring it without knowing how will it go but getting one of the biggest surprises and massive success from a market that literal was not even considered by it, I think the series deserve a spot.

And the character would bring so many elements to the game, moveset, gameplay, music, items, stages and many more things that will add something unique to an already great game.

I make the question because most of the people that don´t consider Shulk as a playable character is because they don´t know the game and haven´t play it, the game is really great, once you play it you start getting why it receive so many praises from the critics and people in general, it has a unique charm and magic.

Many things makes Shulk and Xenoblade Chronicles deserve a spot in Smash and I think I will prefer seeing him make it to the roster than another rep that has already a another character representing his series (don´t get me wrong, I would love to see Ridley in Smash he is my most wanted character that it began in the times of Smash Bros 64, but if I need to choose between him and Shulk, I will choose Shulk for what it can bring to the Smash Universe and what he represents, that is "Hope" in a market that was already lost in a eyes of company that didn´t even think in bringing this gem to the west and now thinks that it deserves a second chance in getting this types of games again).

Mario: 4 or 5
Yoshi: 1
DK: 3 or 4
Wario: 1 or 2
Zelda: 4 or 5
Pokemon: 5
Kirby: 3
Star Fox: 3
Kid Icarus: 1 or 2
Metroid: 2 or 3
F-Zero: 2
Mother: 2
Fire Emblem: 3 or 4
Pikmin: 1
Animal Crossing: 1
Retro: 4 or 5 (Ice Climbers, G&W, R.O.B, and a newcomer or two)
Misc series: 2 or 3 (Isaac, Shulk, others?)
Wii Fit: 1
Third Party: 3 (Sonic, Snake, Megaman)

It's a bit too much, but I think it's at least...somewhat realistic.
