First Nintendo Character, First Miyamoto Character.
Okay I can't tell if you seriously pay attention to what people have said in this topic or you just don't do the research. Sheriff is NOT the first Nintendo character.
The first Nintendo game is a horseback arcade cabinet game called
EVR Race, making the cast of horseback riders the first actual Nintendo characters.
So no, he is not the first Nintendo character.
Incredibly insignificant?
Yes, you read that correctly. Please tell me what makes him significant enough to be compared to Nintendo All-Stars?
Did I say they were? No, I said he'd be a good surprise retro character that wasn't NES.
No you didn't, but you're suggesting that Sheriff would be the character that did the same thing Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B. has done. Being a completely unexpected character. But that wouldn't be happening, as Wii Fit Trainer is already the character that does that.
Why? Then who is the first Nintendo character? Please stop saying he isn't.
I also never mentioned who the first character was because I assumed you were actually reading the topic. This comment proves otherwise.
Because we yet to have a character that solely represents the arcade. The other ones you keep mentioning simply had a few arcade games, but represent other parts of history such as the DK Country series or Super Mario series. I guess we didn't need an NES retro like Sakurai wanted because Mario is an NES retro.
You completely ignored what I asked there.
Why would the Arcade get a representative over actual Nintendo consoles like the SNES, GB, and VB?
Yes, I'm the only one who does that. I should be the only one criticized for it regardless of not intending it. You're all perfect and never do this. Here is how it works: When one person shoves his opinion into you're face, it's okay as long as people agree with the opinion. But, if people defend their opinion and don't give into yours it's considered being the bad guy.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Like DK being an ape and being called Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong's name comes from Miyamoto believing "donkey" meant "stupid". Sure there was inspiration, but it's not like King Kong's existence led to the creation of DK. Popeye actually DID lead to the creation of Mario, Pauline, and Donkey Kong.
But why you feel like you should continue this cartoon character debate I don't know. Nobody is supporting Popeye (at least seriously).
Debunked? Because Nintendo and Sakurai came out and issued a statement about how they don't give a **** about Sheriff and Sakurai never had any interest in this part of Nintendo history and doesn't want to revive him like he does with Smash Characters.
Debunked as in "He's not the first Nintendo character". I don't know if Sakurai cares about Arcade characters or not, all I know is that you keep supporting the Sheriff like he's this unsung hero and overly important video game character when he has nothing special at all other than being an arcade character, which would feel forced to me.
Not Obscure =/= Not as obscure as you described
Then instead of leaving me in the dark and making me guess what you mean, how about you try to enlighten me about how "not obscure" this arcade character is then.
Yes, Ariand! A Cartoon Character and a peice of paper make more sense to be in Smash than the first Nintendo Character. Even if Sheriff was the most worthless Nintendo Character ever on Virtual Boy it would make more sense than a cartoon character and a card game.
I think a cartoon character that lead to the creation of the biggest video gaming icon and a product that led to the creation of said company that creates the games we hold so dearly to ourselves is more important to said company then some arcade character that has been falsely given the title as "The First Nintendo Character".
Did I say it made him important today? No, stop assuming. I posted this because it proves he's not incredibly unimportant overall as you keep claiming.
No you didn't say that, but a line of text written in 2001 by a translator doesn't mean anything. Especially considering that none of the trophies were written by Sakurai himself, as there are many flaws found with their descriptions (Several Kirby ones can be found in Brawl's trophies as Melee's Mario trophies have incorrect information on them as well).
So using that to support the Sheriff wouldn't help you at all, because we don't know if Sakurai legitimately thinks that about the Sheriff and if he'd even still think of the character like that today.
All you've given me were mostly questions to my questions and incredibly vague answers (Oh, and you can't forget the sarcastic remarks too). So please try to answer my responses and give a direct counter argument instead of just saying: "I didn't mean it like that!" or "Your explanation is wrong!".
Oh, and Ariand/AEM....I told you so.
A shame too. I was hoping to be done with this topic because everybody doesn't want to talk about this.
I don't know guys, I think Noah's on to something.
Sheriff is a big part of Nintendo history, and is quite iconic in the sense.
If you don't want a generic sheriff, make him a sprite instead. Boom, he's unique.
Plus, if you want to bring up generic names, ROB was named Robot in Japan.
Define big.
Because it's nowhere near Ridley big.
