I am certain he is... he's even playing mind games with the Ridley fans.
I don't think Sakurai is playing mindgames with the Ridley fanbase. If Ridley is a stage hazard, I genuinely think Sakurai believes stage hazard Ridley to be something "hype-able".

Well depends again- if the japanese release date for 3D World goes out from November (perhaps December?), then we could get two reveals in November. Or Sakurai breaks the mold AGAIN and makes 3 reveals in one month.
He might do that for October as well, so 6 or 5 (or possibly more if he decides to reveal more than one Pokemon rep) reveals in a total of 2 months seems a bit much, but it has been a while since we've gotten any newcomers.

Good afternoon all, it's good to see everyone so happy, especially since the huge surprise of Toon Link was already announced. I'm personally surprised it happened before Zelda and Ganondorf, but I think it's safe to assume now that we may definitely be getting unlockable characters announced along with the starter veterans. It's also interesting now that we officially know that just because a character is a background character in a stage, another version of said character is not impossible for being playable, which boosts my happiness for Ridley's possible inclusion sometime down the line. Anyways, congratulations to Toon Link fans.

Sakurai is playing mind games on us then. :p
Of course, that's his specialty. He's been doing it for like 20 years now.

A Link Between Worlds does not release until 2014 in Japan. Considering that Sakurai coincided the reveals of Olimar and Toon Link with the Japanese release dates for Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD, we may end up not even getting Zelda in November.
But Luigi's coincided with the NA release of Dream Team.

True, but it also coincided with a Nintendo Direct. Keep in mind that Luigi actually happened later that day.

I think since Q1 2014 is drier than the last quarter of 2013, it might be better to save Zelda for next year.

Still, we should still note that Mac's reveal seems quite heightened if the whole "Thursday Reveal"-thing is becoming some kind of a norm with release dates. I might be over-exaggarating but so far things kinda lean to this direction even if most have been by chance (though even if there's Peach who came out of nowhere but)
Wait.... characters are revealed on Thursdays?

Lemme see...

Olimar... July 12, 2013... Friday
Luigi... August 7, 2013... Wednesday
Peach... September 12, 2013... Thursday
Toon Link... September 26, 2013... Thursday

Nah... no patterns... it is just September.

Sakurai isn't dumb, he's practically the guy who runs Nintendo's most hypeable game, he knows how people react better than anyone else. He wouldn't be pumping Ridley up just to be a stage hazard, in that case he would simply have shown him right off the bat, likely with Luigi getting roasted and some kind of half-funny quote. He's not oblivious to what's going on.

I know- Mac's anniversary though is on Thursday too? So I wonder if that could give us some indication if we can look forward to it.

Well that would be strange. Why would a mere cameo generate hype?

Then again, it's Sakurai.
I don't think its to generate hype. Sakurai doesn't value hype as much he used to. Brawl's dojo hyped it up well but it also messed with people's expectations.

Sakurai likes surprises. He believes surprises are a part of gaming, and unlocking things is important to him. Hence, many Melee veterans became unlockable in Brawl despite being starters in Melee because he like that feeling of surprise.

As far as I know, there is a great disparity between Ridley's hype (and popularity) here and his hype (and popularity) in Japan, which is where Sakurai would receive the brunt of his feedback.

The main thing was there was a link to Dream Team on Luigi's Page.

Not that I dont like Toon Link or anything but his inclusion has me worried. The pics don't help either.

See I play as Link, and not that im against clones or anything, they just have problems. In Brawl, TL was always the better choice because he was better for survival. It made Link sort of pointless to play because he died so easily.

What im trying to say is, if you have a clone of a character who is VERY similar, like TL, one is going to be better than the other.

Take SF for example. Ryu and Ken are very similar but they manage to both be viable options. Imagine now, that Ken was slightly slower and less powerful. Would anyone want to play as Ken? Probably not. No one wants to be at a disadvantage like that coming out of the gate when they can pick a character who is the same, just stronger.

This is my problem with Link and TL. I know its early and TL might be different than Link in the game, but if its the same situation as on Brawl I will be upset. Link has been bad in all the games, but I still play as him despite all this. I just dont like the thought of being at a disadvantage because I picked a different version of the same character.

Anyone else share this viewpoint?
I kind of feel the same way to a degree, and with both of them looking unchanged so far we might end up with the same situation.

--
Im starting to worry that some of these characters wont be changed what so ever, i want new moves and tools to work with but if they keep sticking to things for traditions sake how are we supposed to get anything new for these returning characters? Im scared ganondorf is going to remain like he was once again too, hell even a visual change would help but im not even certain if we can get that at this point.

True, but it's not like there would be a shortage of other characters who don't have an upcoming game to promote that can be revealed next year. Personally I think if ALBW was releasing holiday season in both regions, Nintendo might prioritize the Japanese release above the NA one, but as Nintendo really likes to drive promotion home during the holidays, and it's questionable as to whether 3D World will get a corresponding character reveal, chances for a November Zelda unveil still look fairly promising.

Plus who's to say we won't get a Direct sometime in the next couple months?

Yeah, that makes sense to everyone, except Sakurai.

I actually would think its possible that Sakurai wanted to make Ridley playable, but Sakamoto was like "nope goes against my vision of Metroid (which is ****)", and Sakurai does pre-Brawl Villager turn on him.

3D World is by far the most major title being released for the Wii U so far in its life, if Sakurai does have a character ready to correspond with 3D World (Toad or Bowser Jr.), he will probably use it.

I agree, and since Peach has been revealed already I'd be surprised if he didn't have something else to coincide with its release, but either way, this month should show double reveals are not impossible, and if there'd be any time for it, it'd be in the month holiday marketing goes hardest. I still think my points are fairly sound. I mean, I could see Zelda being saved until next year, I just don't think that's the more likely option.

Being that Bowser, a two time veteran, and Pit have had moveset changes, I think we're going to be seeing more. Sticking to traditions is fine, and Sakurai is likely to do that with most of the characters, but he knows when a character needs an overhaul (such as Bowser). And Ganondorf is probably the character in need of the biggest overhaul.

I desperately hope it is Toad who will be confirmed as a playable newcomer for SSB4 when Super Mario 3D World comes out. I have been wanting to play as Toad since Melee.

I guess Toad is my Ridley. :p

October is going to be really interesting though. The Pokemon veterans (Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario) all have something about themselves that tie into Pokemon X/Y. Sonic has Sonic Lost Worlds being released. Mii has Wii Party U and Wii Sports Club being released.

Its going to be a packed month.

Not to mention we still have the Sword of Damacles that is a potential confirmation of stage hazard Ridley still hanging over our heads.

As far as I'm concerned, only Captain Falcon and Ness became unlockable in Brawl despite being starters in Melee, and they appeared in the original.

But yeah, I see your point.

We also potentially have Mac too. Punch-Out!! released first in North America in October 1987, not sure why everybody thinks the Japanese date would out prioritize the original release.

Because the FE13 fanboys are really fanatical in general. Just ask Habanero about it. There is like crazy cults for minor FE13 characters over at GameFAQs and 4chan.
Probably because Fire Emblem: Awakening is the first FE game many people have played, and the deceptive amount of people thinking being recent means everything. Too bad people are overblowing that mentality to ******** levels, which is in the end going to backfire hard.

The characters' priority from Brawl means nothing.

Here we have one of the very last additions in Brawl, now being one of the very first reveals in SSB4. You know what else that means? Folks like Jigglypuff and Wolf aren't hanging over the chopping block as much as some people here used to think. Sakurai's views of character priority do change from game to game, it seems, between the newcomer Villager and the now early Toon Link, meaning that being late in Brawl's files has no standing on who will get in at this point! Awesome!
Yeah that's totally something we can take away from this. It's a rather fitting announcement too considering the debate about Jigglypuff yesterday. Sakurai clearly must read SmashBoards :p.

I will say this certainly looks good for Toon Zelda.

True for those guys the change signifigant and welcomed, but for them it was also highlighted in some way by now, where with fox, and link no change has been shown (yet) and from everything weve seen they dont look any different what so ever. As a link main im disappointed that there is nothing to get excited about, hes just there with everything he had before.

It'll be a pokemon, either mewtwo for hype purposes, or it'll be jigglypuff :p

Oh and sonic is gonna be confirmed as well 10 days later :D

Edit: how many times do I have to say the game is not finalized? TL and link will be changed, i'll be shocked if they did absolutely nothing to their movesets upon the game's release.

Toon Zelda was planned for Brawl and is in the new The Wind Waker HD game. SHOO-IN AND MOST LIKELY NEWCOMER ALONGSIDE LITTLE MAC AND CHROM.

I really just want Pokémon Trainer to get all of those "The 3DS can't handle him" and "Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh/Unova/Kalos Trainer replacing him" ideas out of the window. Jigglypuff would also be nice.
