We already have Pokémon Trainer Red who happens to have all three starters... this wasn't possible without trading... and the only way it's possible without trading is only in Pokémon Yellow... and it was based off the anime.

I think Sakurai can get around the no-anime rule if the characters are already owned by Nintendo.

Red owns all of them in his in-game appearance to show no favor over one starter in particular. That's a very loose argument that really doesn't support your cause. As much as I'd love to see Team Rocket in Smash, another PT is highly unnecessary, and would give pokemon 13 playable characters total. (if we assume Mewtwo and Lucario are back)

Honestly, and I'm not trying to start a fight here, I am VERY disappointed in having PILOTWINGS being represented in the Smashverse, because not only do we get an awkward 8-bit stage with strange clippings, an unusual layout, and the overall I-don't-get-it factor, but now Sakurai has almost but confirmed we are going to WASTE a character slot on a PilotWings character... This SUCKS, seriously...

A stage doesn't equal a character confirmation, though. Look at Hanenbow, Smashville and Pictochat in Brawl.

Yes, apparently it's confirmed that we're going to get a character from Pilotwings because stages always correlate to characters. This explains why we got a character from Electroplankton, Animal Crossing, and Pictochat in Brawl.

Misty's Melee trophy... it is based on the anime design, not the Red/Blue/Yellow design.

Zero One's Melee trophy... it clearly mentioned a character who originated in the anime (Todd) even though the vehicle itself originated in the video game (Pokémon Snap).

Smashville was in Brawl without Villager... SSB4 added Villager to go with new Animal Crossing stage.

Pilotwings stage is in SSB4 without Pilotwings character... so it means SSB5 will have a new Pilotwings stage with a Pilotwings character.

How do people not understand that stages do not equal characters? Now moreso than ever given that they're separating stages between handheld and console, because some characters simply do not have games on a handheld and some characters don't have games on main consoles. Wii Fit Trainer being a shining example - she's obviously getting a Wii Fit stage on home console, but will there be a Wii Fit stage on handheld? No, probably not. Basically, since characters are the same between consoles but the stages are different, the stages probably will not reflect the inclusion of characters.

...Or are you all suggesting that the inclusion of the Nintendog character is imminent? God help us all. -.-

The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo is most likely coming back.
The original protagonist Pokémon Trainer Red is probably coming back.
We are most likely getting a new flavor of the month.
The Smash staple Jigglypuff is probably coming back.

Never heard of Akamaru, just went for Amaterasu because it was the closest parallel that came up to mind when thinking about a hypothetical Nintendogs character. Blame Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

This is of course implying that Pilotwings isn't important to Nintendo's history.
Which it sort of is, considering that there was a time where the Pilotwings franchise had a launch title for new Nintendo consoles with the SNES and N64. A Gamecube one was announced and completed, but never published.
We also have the 3DS one that was released at launch for the 3DS but focusing more on Miis and Wuhu Island rather than on the original content.

That being said I'm completely okay with the franchise getting a stage, it seems warranted enough for me.
I'm just baffled that we saw this before Wuhu Island.

Pilotwings more than deserves a simple stage, a character is more arguable though. Ofc just because we got a stage hardly means an accompanying character is inevitable, anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't been paying attention to past stages.

Probably because Akamaru is from Naruto, which is not exactly seen in a positive light by most members of this forum.

King K. Rool: VERY popular, check out the polls, most popular DK rep, villain, who doesn't have him in their roster? Pretty self explanatory.
Tingle: I like him better then Impa, or Ghirahim, etc, probably the most likely Zelda rep.
Ridley: See King K. Rool except he's a Metroid rep. Pretty self explanatory.
Palutena: Who else for Kid Icarus? Very Popular, female. Pretty self explanatory.
Takamaru: One of the most potential/likely retro characters, pretty self explanatory.
Little Mac: See Takamaru.
Isaac: Pretty self explanatory. See Takamaru.
Newtwo: 6th Gen rep, VERY VERY popular, even before Newtwo, Theres nothing Mewtwo has that Newtwo doesn't,Pretty self explanatory.

Basically, it happened more so in Japan. Isaac's popularity is much less than it was pre-Brawl in Japan, while Starfy is the second most popular "new series" character in Japan behind Shulk, according to ChronoBound. Elsewhere, however, Isaac is much more requested.
