When was the last stage revealed? Two weeks ago?

Also... does this mean a new character for this stage? >:D

Lark used to be the face of Club Nintendo magazine back in the day.

Suddenly this thread goes silent. Oh well... can't wait for all the speculation tomorrow.

Off topic, but here's a basic idea for a Startropics stage:

You fight in the sea by C Island and Coralcola. There's swimmible ocean water all around and the Sub C as a platform. The family of dolphins from Chapter 2 swim by in the background every so often, and the little dolphin will occasionally rescue a character who is drowning in the water.

I don't know how long it will be before that ring stage is confirmed to be from Punch-Out!!! or a Smash original stage, but I'm hoping it's from Punch-Out!!!

----

Man... if it had been Crescent Island from Pilotwings 64.... I would have suffered a heart attack right here right now.
(As that would have meant that it was essentially a StarTropics stage).

Anyway, love your idea.
C-Island is definitely the place to make a StarTropics stage.
I would love to see the giant serpent in the background too. :3

I hope they improve water physics so that water battles are more fun.

I think if Meowth was in SSB, nobody would care unless it's the same one from Team Rocket. I don't think Sakurai is going to pull characters from the actual Anime.

If Meowth is popular outside the Anime, I've clearly been living under a rock.
It doesn't matter why Meowth is popular... it doesn't matter how Meowth became popular... popularity is popularity... and Meowth is popular. I see a lot of people still suggesting Meowth for Smash even to this day... even if it's only occasionally... like right now... because they actually would like to see Meowth playable in Smash someday... silent majority, I guess? It is just that Mewtwo overshadows Meowth... and a lot of people expect a new flavor of the month... so they keep debating over which flavor.

BTW... Meowth originated as a video game character... the anime only gave Meowth a personality and identity... without the anime, Meowth is just one of hundreds of Pokémon devoid of personality and identity except for the nature that came with it and the name you gave it... and this applies to Pikachu as well.

Smash isn't canon anyway... so Meowth in Smash could talk and is with Team Rocket... but unlike the Meowth in the anime, the Meowth in Smash can actually fight and is able to use Pay Day like the other Meowths in the games.

Alright, question time.

Has anyone wondered if Nester, from Howard and Nester, is a bit more likely now? As the TRUE WTF character for SSB4?
Because at least Wii Fit Trainer comes from a successful Wii franchise, but Mr.G&W was a handheld, and ROB was a peripheral...
Nester's WTFness would be the fact that he was Nintendo Power's mascot.

.... and the Pilotwings stage would represent him sort of well, since he want by the alias Lark in Pilotwings 64.

Also... Nester also had a bowling game. Could share a certain special with Villager.

Shinhed... this is a SNES Pilotwings stage... not the N64 Pilotwings stage... there can only be one choice.... Pilotwings Instructor for Smash! :troll:

I like Espio's roster because it has Toad, Duck Hunt Dog, Meowth, Little Mac, and Pac-Man. :)

Seriously, I thought we were done with the whole thing where people seem to forget that the anime largely affects a Pokemon's popularity. Come on people. You can't try and separate a Pokemon's popularity into game VS anime. Sakurai picks Pokemon due to popularity, which for the most part, comes from anime/movie appearances.

I'd rather have Captain N than Nester. I think they'd serve essentially the same function as a WTF choice.

That said, either would be inspired.

OK, so my brother used to watch Pokemon all the time, it was never my thing, I've never seen the show. But you seem to know your Meowth, so can you answer my question, the question that's been burning inside me for all these years?

Why can Meowth speak English when all the other Pokemon can't?

It was explained in one of the episodes of the anime. Back before Meowth was part of team rocket, he was just an plain old meowth, who was in love with another Meowth. He learned to speak English to impress her but it failed, and he soon ran away, soon being found by Team Rocket.

Yeah he/her has great moveset potential, if Mii got in though it would probably be due to the personalization factor more than anything else.
I'm sure Sakurai would love to give fans the ability to make themselves a potential smasher.
But if Miis did get in everyone would choose Mii, look at Mario Kart 7. Unless the Mii is a certain Mii.

Still up Peach's dress.
I'm one of those weirdos that would prefer Meowth over a flavour of the week Pokemon if I'm honest. He's still relevant and known by more people than Zoroark and Genesect.

Eevee IS well known and is relevant but only because it evolves into everything. I guess Blue used one in Yellow too? But if we're going that far back then Team Rocket are also technically in it.

How would Eevee battle exactly? All the suggestions I've seen so far have been based off it's evolutions, which if we're going by strict in game canon as I've seen suggested would mean Eevee would be limited to Tackle and a few other basic moves with maybe Shadow Ball and Dig, the first of which Mewtwo will probably be bringing back with him.

I don't expect Team Rocket's cat to be in the game, but I'd like to say that if Meowth is being brought down because all his influence is coming from the anime, I feel Eevee's evolution moveset should be done also as it's clearly based off Red's Eevee from the manga.
Pokemon evolve for life, they are not Digimon.

It could be just a stage, like Pictochat, or that electroplankton one.
Yup. People really need to stop putting any kind of stock into the idea that franchises and their characters are linked to stages so closely. That idea was abolished with Brawl, and is only going to become even less relevant in SSB4 with the fact that stages are seperated into 3DS and Wii U stages based on whether they were on a home or portable console. Pilotwings wasn't on a handheld, Ice Climbers was a home console game, Gyromite was a home console game, Wii Fit Trainer can't really get a fitting portable stage, Pokemon has primarily stuck to handhelds and Mother is separated in that Mother 3 was handheld exclusive and Earthbound was a home console game. Plus, we've already seen both the Punch-Out stage which couldn't possibly have a handheld counterpart, and the Nintendogs stage which logically wouldn't have a home console counterpart.

Basically... Sakurai does what he wants. The stages are an indicator of how much he liked that locale, not anything character-based. The stages are different per console but the characters are not, so trying to look for any kind of character-based meaning in the stages is just redundant.

Ps if ROB does get a home stage this time either a gyromites stage or stack up stage ROB will be confirmed again just like that

I'm loving the idea of a fly-around map for Pilot-wings. Starting of on the run way before taking off and seeing the whole map beneath you. I've never played the original SNES game and maybe some of you who have will have a better idea than me but perhaps you could swap aircraft between laps of the island? Not that I know what the different craft are.

Who knows? Maybe they will sneak a preview of a character in there just to surprise us. I'm still maintaining the belief that we're getting a character either this week, or beginning of next week.

That's the thing, I'm not saying 100% confirmation.

I'm not clinging to any belief. If Brawl had 50% stages with characters, nad 50% stages without characters, THEN I wouldn't mention it.

But I'm saying it's a possibility because there's still 3 Stages vs 27 (not counting FD or BF).
One which was an unrepresented DS Chat thing (no characters there), the other one was from a music making game (no characters there). And finally Smashville which NOW has a character.

Doubtful, considering the direct is focusing on titles being released during fall. It would be really random if we focused on Super Smash Bros., even for a brief second. It's like the equivalent of having a documentary on dolphins and suddenly flipping to talking about toucans.

You got mode 7 in my smash bros!

Like everyone else it just seems like a stage without a rep, or possibly it could be a stage that flows through a ton of classic games all at once.

Eh, it might seem a bit out of place amongst the holiday lineup, yeah. But it could also be a great chance to get some more hype going. Since the Directs come on a roughly monthly basis (apparently?), setting a precedent now for showing off those exciting newcomer vids (or just plain gameplay vids for vet announcements) would be a clever way to attract more attention to the other stuff being promoted during the presentations. If people are expecting character reveals, then they're more likely to watch and potentially get interested in the other games coming soon. Could explain the lack of fanfare surrounding the new Smash site, which is a little weird after the crazy amount of hype they generated via the Dojo.

But if Miis did get in everyone would choose Mii, look at Mario Kart 7. Unless the Mii is a certain Mii.

Super Smash Bros. is NOT Mario Kart. In Mario Kart, there is only a slight difference between characters---so slight that a novice probably wouldn't even notice. However, the nature of Smash is different: characters are EVERYTHING! Outside of a few clones, they all play differently. People select characters not only because of the characters themselves, but how they play. One would have to enjoy how Miis play to select them all the time, as is done in Mario Kart.
Still no Wuhu Island though, which is surprising me.

Wuhu Island is still very possible. For one thing, it's not only linked to Pilotwings... it is also linked to Wii Sports and Wii Fit. It can coexist on the Wii U version if it were a Wii Sports stage. Also, it may be the Pilotwings stage on the 3DS. I'd still be surprised and upset if it didn't appear

I agree. No objections here.

Again, since it seems I was ignored.

The three stages without characters:

Hannenbow, from Electroplankton. (This game has no characaters)
Pictochat, from Nintendo DS menus. (This mode has no characters)
Smashville, from Animal Crossing. (In Brawl it didn't have a character, probably planned, but Sakurai changed his mind)

Pilotwings: This game HAS characters in the Snes, and the more popular ones are on the N64 version. The PilotWings Resort characters don't count because those are Miis, and this is a Wii U stage, from the Snes era. Wuhu Island is both a Wii U and 3DS stage.

If Animal Crosser didn't make it to Brawl because he was "too peaceful", and that idea has already been scrapped for SSB4, then I don't understand why people think this is impossible.

Only reason AGAINST this, from my POV, is that it's not Sakurai's way to announce stages before characters, especially if it concerns unrepresented IPs. So Punch Out first, and now Pilotwings makes me suspicious.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to link stage speculation to character speculation with anything resembling certainty. I personally really don't think it means that we'd get a character, mostly because doing so would remove the entire point of pilot wings, as you'd be making them not a pilot and stealing their wings.

Yes yes, Captain Falcon's a racer, but this seems a lot more of an egregious change from the original characters.

Closest thing to a Pilotwings character we will get is Mii.

And I really like the idea of a stage going through a bunch of retro classics.

Again, since it seems I was ignored.

Another reason against this is that a Pilotwings character would be a WTF retro, that doesn't fit the bill of the other WTF retros that have been added. Just saying, like Mr. Game & Watch, a generic character from Nintendo's early handhelds. R.O.B a peripheral system attachment that wasn't even a video game character, which saved the console gaming industry in a way as I've learned? I just don't see a Pilotwings WTF retro happening. It wouldn't be truly WTF. For reasons stated this is why I don't shoot down the idea of Harry the teleroboxer, because he was from the VB, a terrible blemish on nintendo's history, but still there none the less.

Edit: I definantly get your point though and know that it is possible.

You know what will be funny if the boxer ring that is considered being a Punch Out! stage, when is revealed will be a stage for Harry from Teleroboxer, would be one of the trollest moves from Sakurai. I´m not saying it will 100% true, but still be funny and will laugh until I drop on the floor.

Here's the thing... You're either retro, or you're a WTF character (that MAY be retro as well)

Retro characters:
Melee: Ice Climbers
Brawl: Pit

WTF characters:
Melee: Mr.Game & Watch
Brawl: ROB
SSB4: (MAYBE) Wii Fit Trainer.

A Pilotwings character might be more suited in plain Retro Characters additions.

Are we really discussing the possibility of a Pilotwings character? I give up...

Aww. Don't give up, Mac! We've only just started. :D

I do hope people realise that this has been the MOST interesting topic to talk about for me since the E3 reveals, so forgive me if I get a LITTLE carried away. :D

I will say this every game of Smash Bros has two things in common in their roster, it has one classic character and one retro WTF character:

Smash Bros 64
Classic: Captain Falcon
Classic WTF: Ness

Smash Bros Melee
Classic: Ice Climbers
Classic WTF: Mr. Game & Watch

Smash Bros Brawl
Classic: Pit
Classic WTF: R.O.B.

Smash Bros 4
Classic: Takamaru, Dog (Duck Hunt), Little Mac (more to come).
Classic WTF: Sheriff, Harry, (I´m out of ideas).

I've not visited this thread in a week, and wow, this thread has moved a lot.

I'm seeing a lot of reporting of DivineDeity's posts from this thread. I don't want to hand out an infraction on the very day I become a mod, so Mr. DivineDeity, do see this post as a warning.
