The first gen may be the game most represented, but there's a reason for that, since it's the most iconic and is where the series started, as buggy and linear as it was back then.

And also, most of the pokemon represented in Smash Bros may have started in one gen, but have appeared in others, like Jigglypuff and Pikachu both appearing in all 4th gen games, Mewtwo being a legendary pokemon again in Gen 4, the remakes of Red and Green in Gen 3, and of course using pokemon from the current gen at the time like Lucario and Pichu, who were both also featured in more recent gens as well. Also, Mewtwo is the only actual pokemon in itself to be displayed as having villain-esque qualities, such as the cold heart and violent disposition. Am I saying it's a real villain? No, not at all, but non-human villain wise, it's the only pokemon that has a chance of making said role aside from a pokemon like Darkrai or Giratina.
I'm not in favor of removing Pikachu or Jigglypuff, but I do think having Pokemon Trainer and Mewtwo in generation 1 form would be a step backward for the series. The series could also just add another rep from generation 5 and 6, and I would be fine with that. It would not be acknowledge the contributions of generation V (or what will be generation VI's) contributions to the series, to Nintendo, and to gaming. I am fine with one generation sort of representing two (like Lucario represent III and IV) because they come from that same saga in Nintendo's history that Brawl was based.

There are people whose first pokemon was black and white or diamond and pearl, so it would nice for that to be taken into consideration. For them the starters like Oshawott or Grotle is iconic to them.

Additionally, Sakurai has said he goes to the Pokemon Company in making consideration for characters. I can't imagine with all that they work on that they will recommend three returners and a returning veteran who could use a new form but the decide against it for some reason.

So people....

How would you like it if our final Pokemon roster was...

Pikachu
Pokemon Trainer (Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard)
Lucario
Jigglypuff
Mewtwo/Newtwo

Would you guys be satisfied with that?
To be honest... no. I would much prefer we got Meowth over Pokemon Trainer. That is my prerogative. However, Pokemon Trainer should NOT return. It is very simple. He takes the time to create 3 characters. I would actually argue that he takes the time to create 4 characters with all of the necessary balancing that goes into creating him. I would much rather have 3 separate characters to please more fans than one glorified character that only appeals to Gen 1. If PKMN Trainer actually did what he was supposed to do and covered a generic trainer across multiple generations my opinion would vary slightly. However, he is a living fallacy. If he were to have Bayleef and Mudkip instead I think he would be a worthy contender. They pushed Bayleef in the anime FAR more than they every pushed Ivysaur and Mudkip is an internet meme. This would represent Gen 1-3 instead of just Gen 1. That isn't the main issue though. He is challenging to develop. You must create 4 character models and have 4 different sound/voice pieces. You must balance 3 characters in one (to make sure he is coherent). You must balance each individual character to the rest of the roster (Squirtle to the rest, Ivysaur to the rest, and Charizard to the rest). You have to balance him as a whole to the rest of the roster (PKMN trainer to the rest). It was great that they managed to pull it off before. I think a newcomer like Zororark or Meowth would be way better and easier to develop, or make Charizard a stand alone character considering he is the most popular Pokemon. Ivy and Squirtle can always make cameos as Pokeballs. That is my opinion.

I feel like there should be a stronger generation V or VI rep, and I can see Pokemon Trainer getting a new look and another starter combination, probably using the same type of make up. I've suggested Oshawott, Servine, and Emboar before, as I think they are my favorite generation of starters besides Gen 1.

I'm not sure if it will get five reps, but if any series does it would be Pokemon or Mario.

A new Sakurai interview, guys!

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/03/creating-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u-and-3ds?page=1

On page 2, he says "No characters have been cut so far." :awesome: :colorful:
What especially makes me think he's referring to past veterans is this article here. He mentions how not everyone from the previous games will return but that they will try to include as many as they possibly can.

The gist? He will try to add as many as possible, but some will have to be cut due to time restraints. I think this means that he will try to include everyone from the past game (not just Brawl) but that characters like Pichu and Young Link are the lowest priority. I would be unsurprised if whoever is cut returns as DLC anyway.

Wow, IGN, I know you're a horrible website that doesn't care for Nitnendo, but actually TRY to keep up. Seriously, nothing from that article was something I didn't already know.
In IGN's defense, the article appears to be an interview taken at E3, as Rich mentions the same Pac-Man suggestion he does in this article, way back at E3: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06...ters-receive-no-priority-for-super-smash-bros

To me, what concerns me is that it sounds like this game is still early in development. So I think we won't get it until late 2014, and even then it might slip into early 2015. I hope I'm wrong though.

I wouldn't say it's that early in development, but rather the statement that making the characters themselves comes before the overall balancing and tweaking, which seems to be the last parts to completing the game to Sakurai's team. The game has been in development for over a year, and considering Sakurai has the biggest team behind him yet this current Smash Bros, I'm sure things are coming along smoothly. But it does seem like characters such as Ice Climbers are a little tricky to work on the 3DS. Oh well, the only characters I'd be legitimately disappointed at not seeing are Ridley and any form of Mewtwo, other than that, bring Sonic back and you've got me sold. Oh, I'd say bring Luigi back too, but that's a no-brainer.

I still like to see the Pokemon Trainer as Red, considering he shares the exact same design. In that perspective, being included makes much more sense given that Red was not only the first playable character of the Pokemon games, but the only recurrent one to be either fought or played as in 5 generations in a row. In my opinion, the only thing they should change about Pokemon Trainer is his name, or at the very least, recognize him as Red rather than a nameless trainer.

I personally want Wolf to make a comeback. I think he might be in the biggest amount of danger though. With this weird Krystal love and Falco's Melee status. I also want Mewtwo to return and Zelda to be redesigned to her SS design. Other than that I wouldn't mind Little Mac or Black Shadow.

Given the backlash would be incredibly bad if Charizard was removed, I highly doubt they'd put in a new Pokemon Trainer. We don't need another Mewtwo incident. And it's not about repping current gens, it's about repping the franchise as a whole, which is why the pokemon that appear in the first gen are best suited for that, because they've been in almost every generation to date. We're confirmed to get Pikachu and Jigglypuff in Gen 6, Mewtwo is obviously in, probably as a secret post-game legendary, and Zoroark can rep the 5th Gen as it is the most popular non-legendary 5th Gen pokemon.

Yeah. Charizard can be a stand alone character though. They would just need to redesign him a little.

Toon Link, Ike and Lucario may all suffer from being replaced but coming back as future DLC, but characters like Pokemon Trainer and Ice Climbers may be problematic to program thanks to the use of multiple characters/difficult model editiing.

Without a doubt, the Pokemon Trainer is the veteran that would take the most effort to return, and since they're stressed for time as it is, it's unknown what his fate will be, and since the Ice Climbers are having issues on the 3DS version, which means the Ice Climbers are partially confirmed, both characters may not make it. As for Wolf...Fox and Falco are obviously first priority, but since he's a character that would have to be made from the ground up like everyone else as Sakurai stated everything is made from scratch, they may go and make Krystal instead since she's more unique than Wolf is. It's all questionable, but I will definitely say that nobody from the original 20 are going to get cut from this game.

That seems to be the interviewer's perspective, and I'm inclined to agree. Perhaps Sakurai's just being very unspecific purposefully, but every answer seems very conceptual and what they are thinking about, rather than what they have done. Which would make sense in terms of the comments like: "no characters had been cut so far" because it just isnt that far along yet. They haven't finalized the roster either, and are still determining how all the characters fit together.

I don't think Sakurai would do that. Although he's an important character to the franchise popularity-wise, Sakurai wouldn't give one starter recognition over another in the same group, hence why he didn't just make Charizard his own character in Brawl. I'm pretty sure if Sakurai cared only about a Pokemon's popularity, Charizard would've been his own character in Brawl and not accompanied by Squirtle, Ivysaur and Red.

I don't know. I am just saying that if any cuts were to be made PKMN Trainer would most likely be at the top of that list. If he didn't want to make Charizard a stand-alone character I guess Charizard would be removed. PKMN Trainer isn't worth the development time. :p

To Sakurai, it's not a case of who gets cut, it's "I've got this list of characters and the priority they take in coming back, and I will include as many from this list as I can, but I can confirm I won't be able to bring them all back". That's how I see it working. He's not thinking about right now, but rather the future and how he plans to continue building up this title. What I'd like to say is that Sakurai is very optimistic. And no, their roster may not be finalized before only a month or so before launch, I mean...remember Sonic's late inclusion in Brawl?

All I can say is...I hope that rumor of Takamaru being revealed by a Namco employee is true. We've had a bunch of different sword styles in Smash Bros, but nobody has been a Samurai...but he can use fire attacks as well, so I guess Roy isn't that important anymore. :p
Where'd you find this?

I personally liked the Pokemon trainer as a character, but the concept and idea was weird in itself. Not saying it was bad, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai went back to stand-alone pokemon battling only like in Smash 64 and Melee. But hey, maybe he'll be designed as a DLC character, who knows right? And who knows, maybe Sakurai knew he was a tricky character to design and made him priority as one of the first characters designed for the new game? I mean, I heard explicit rumors that Mario has never been the very first character designed for any Super Smash Bros game although being the obvious mainstay.

That old Haliburton leak from January?
As in, the one that claimed there would be a Smash Direct on the 31st of January and there wasn't?

Faker than fake at this point. Not that Takamaru can't be in Smash 4; just that the "rumor" is a load of crock.

It's not where I found it, but where I heard it from. There was an article on a gaming site, not sure which, but the author of the article claimed he had a "private discussion" with a Namco employee discussing the inclusion of Takamaru. I think the article was taken down, but I'm sure the rumor is definitely floating around the internet. And even if it's just a rumor, with his resurgence in popularity and being overall known as a character, Takamaru's chances of being this game's classic rep are pretty high.

If anything, this shows that Sakurai has no intentions of being replaced. If Lucario, Ike and Toon Link go, it'll be due to time constraints, not because of being "replaced".

Takamaru is one of the only retro characters that anyone has expressed any interest in having. So his chances are pretty high. :awesome:

The game still sold really well and was enjoyed by many. Cutting characters always involves backlash, but a developer has to be above that in order to create the best game. I think cutting Mewtwo was the right decision for what we got from the pokemon reps in Brawl.

I just think we just disagree with the whole generational rep thing, because it's not just about pokemon being available in those games, but recognizing the pokemon within those game as comparable generation 1. Saying current generations aren't properly suited to rep the franchise as a whole is the problem. We already have pikachu and jigglypuff, so they would not need to represent the original part of the series. Ike can rep the FE franchise as a whole, and Lucas can rep the Mother franchise as a whole, so why can't Oshawott or Emboar? Ike and Lucas don't appear in every game in the series. I don't see how Oshawott, Servine, and Emboar wouldn't be repping the franchise properly

Pokemon by its nature is a generational franchise. Pikachu and Jigglypuff still appear in the games, but there others who play a larger role in the newer games. Representing the different aspects of Pokemon and how it's changed is the best way to represent the franchise as a whole.

Well that's partially true...if you don't count Little Mac as a classic character though. Although I rather classify the classic character as one who hasn't been seen in a while, ALA Ice Climbers and Pit. And seriously, Samurai style in Smash Bros? Awesome! I mean, a hell of a lot more awesome than Namco pushing for Mitsurugi, that's for sure.

Mitsurugi is kind of my favorite Soul Calibur character... so it is hard to agree with you. However, you are correct. :c

I wasn't really counting Little Mac because of the Punch Out title on Wii. But yeah. I guess he would also be among the only two retro characters that ever see a request. Unless someone is making a retro request just to make a retro request. :p

There really aren't a lot of retro options in high demand, but that's probably why the characters are retro. Because they haven't been in the public eye for so long and havent had a recent game release. Limiting their popularity.

I can see Lip based on Sakurai's positive comments way back when. Balloon Fighter got his one move taken by the Villager. Mach Rider also. And maybe Sukapon if Sakurai has changed his mind. But not all of these, just naming off options.

The one thing that really throws me with predictions is when Sakurai mentioned wanting to bring back retro characters for this Smash.

People actually loved the Pokemon Trainer, mainly because of Charizard, but they loved him none-the-less. And yes, the Mewtwo incident was cutting Mewtwo, one of the most loved pokemon of all-time, in turn for something new. While I don't mind Lucario's inclusion, people complained and complained and COMPLAINED about Mewtwo's removal.

And as for the generation representation...all I can say is is that Sakurai has clearly shown that he isn't that interested in repping very single generation of the franchise and would have done so at an earlier point if it were important to him, AKA no 3rd Gen rep in Brawl. He seems to care about the Pokemon that have an impact on people, like the huge mascot pokemon Pikachu and Jigglypuff, the wildly popular Mewtwo and Charizard, but of course giving his respect to the currently popular pokemon like Lucario and possibly, soon to be, Zoroark. Also, Ike was more of a rep of the American FE games than the series as a whole, and Lucas was there to rep the latest Mother title. Not to mention it works differently with Pokemon than those franchises, as Pokemon is always changing, but the pokemon represented always seem to stay around and are included in the games. I mean, if they gave Jigglypuff some fairy type moves, that'd be just as much repping the 6th gen as the actual Jigglypuff repping the 1st gen.

Mitsurugi is kind of my favorite Soul Calibur character... so it is hard to agree with you. However, you are correct. :c

The only other retro character I can think of that makes sense for Smash Bros is Sukapon, which would be giving major respect to Nintendo's first successful 2D fighting game. So yes, including Takamaru, Little Mac AND Sukapon as classical characters seems pretty good to me. As for my favorite Soul Calibur character...Nightmare FTW.

I think Sakurai is sensible enough to realise Takamaru is far more requested than Mitsurugi. For one he understands it's a Nintendo game and that the fans would be angry if Mitsurugi got a spot over Takamaru and recent interviews have shown Namco receive no preferential treatment.

The topic of Mitsurugi was more of a figure of speech using another Samurai character compared to Takamaru.

I was talking about PKMN Trainer's current ranking in smash polls. They complained, but they still got the game. So it's a lot of noise ultimately. I don't think the developers won't cut someone or not be able to finish them in time because of backlash. They seem to have a lot of artistic integrity to do what they want.

Well it always come down to what Sakurai wants in the end. But the Fire Emblem series does have the generational sense as Pokemon. It's cast is always changing, and all of the main characters haven't been the focus in more than two games (Marth being an exception due to his remakes). I'm not saying each generation needs to be represented, as I've said Lucario represented the Pokemon of that Nintendo era (GC, GBA, and early DS), like how Ike represented FE7 through 10, but those characters (Lucas included) are still also representing their franchise as a whole because they are on equal footing with Pikachu, Marth, and Ness respectively.

The starters of Pokemon trainer are only able to be caught via Pal Park or Trade in generation IV and just Pal Park generation V, like other pokemon, so there's nothing special about them. And isn't the point of Pokemon to catch them all? So necessarily previous generations will have to be caught somehow. It's not exclusive to generation 1 pokemon. All previous generation pokemon are available to be caught or gotten in some form by the newer generations.

Only two Pokemon have stayed since the original Smash, and they are also the only two to make it in Brawl. Just like Marth has stayed, Pikachu and Jigglypuff can stay and the other characters can change if necessary.

Well, in all honesty, you can get the starters as a gift in the 4th Gen, but you get the general consensus of what I mean. And actually, as I said before, Mewtwo was planned for every single game in the franchise, so in some way...he's a perfect attendee in some way/shape/or form. And I'm just saying, if Sakurai really wanted to rep every gen, he would've done it already, that's all.

Holy crap this thread moves fast.

All I have to say is that having no personality doesn't hurt anybody. That isn't even one of Sakurai's requirements. It just doesn't matter, and there is no way to prove it matters.

As Golden said several pages ago, most arguments against Ridley are silly at best. Just think about this. If Ridley was allowed a chance to throw down with his life long nemesis Samus, but only if he was shrunk a wee bit, don't you think he would take that opportunity? Or would his feelings be hurt because he would seem "less intimidating"?

Oh wait, he doesn't have feelings because he's a fictional character. He's a blood thirsty space pirate commander who won't let anything get in his way. Not to mention, we don't really have a "blood thirsty mindless beast" character archetype anyway for all of you haters saying that that would be abrasive towards his chances :awesome:

Hate to double post, but:

According to this interview, no character has been cut so far. This is good news to hear :).

Well let's see now...

He obviously wouldn't care as long as he can try and kill Samus. Hell, I think he'd take the challenge even if he was made half of her size. Why? He's Ridley, and he definitely likes a challenge.
