If it were my choice, I wouldn't even add someone from Fire Emblem. No character will ever make the entire fanbase happy, there will always be one side against another side.
That being said, I find a FE rep to be inevitable, and I think the inclusion of Roy in Melee (and to a much lesser extent Ike in Brawl) shows that Sakurai leans towards the most recent lords.
So that being said I expect Chrom to be playable. I don't want anymore discussion. And if you try to argue with me, I won't respond, k?

I just put him there as a placeholder Fire Emblem rep, I don't even know what to think anymore.

If you want to go risky for a unique FE newcomer, you better pick Anna or Robin.

I'd pick Avatar/Robin. Represents not only Awakening but current and likely future FE, vast potential to be different from Marth and Ike, and unorthodox enough that Sakurai would choose it.

I agree with Louie G, Fire Emblem is such a controversial topic that a place holder is best to avoid arguments. The only ones you could really put on their without a big debate is Marth and Ike.

One of the first FE characters Westerners saw, has phire, has popularity from Smash Bros...

For all intents and purposes though he is a japanese exclusive lord from a 2002 handheld game. And you can call Marth all you want, but he's been in 4-5 Fire Emblem games as recently as FE12. Hell, with Ike, Marth, and Chrom, that covers the last five Fire Emblems for the last eight years. Ike is already kind of questionable. Random one-time lords from older games than that just come off as unnecessary.

EDIT: I've been cool with Kamek since pre-Brawl. If they decide to do it, why not.

I'm tempted to see if I can think of a roster that makes nobody happy.

Cut Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff. They are irrelevant.
Replace Mario with Dr. Mario (Mario was a clone anyway).
Since the year of Luigi is over, Luigi is irrelevant and should not be added.
Mr. Saturn will be the lone MOTHER rep.
The Zelda series is gone, and Hyrule Warriors is the new big series. Only Link stays. And Tingle is added to to relevance in his spin-off series.
Add Owain as the lone Fire Emblem rep.
Cut Meta Knight. He was cheap anyway.
Cut Lucario and don't bring Mewtwo back. Add Snubbull instead, as he represents the Fairy type.
All retros are pointless, and detract from requested characters. Cut 'em.
Add all 3 Mii weights as separate characters. They are Nintendo's mascots after all.
Sonic is a Sega character and does not belong in a Smash Bros game.
And that is a roster everyone hates.
