Roster Prediction Discussion Thread

Ike. There's a topic to discuss.

Specifically, would he even be a likely low priority veteran? I really doubt that. I mean, no one within his franchise except obviously Marth is more, or even as important to FE history as Ike is given that he is one of the only two protagonists to star in more than one game. Assuming there will be another FE character added, what possible reason would they have to be prioritized over Ike?

Ike doesn't really have much of an excuse like Roy. With Roy, he was a clone character who was included at the last minute. Could of been included, or pushed aside for something else. In that case it was the latter in favor of Ike, who for all intensive purposes is a much more solid and fleshed out character then Roy with a niche no other character emulates (heavy powerhouse swordsman) and having a stronger presence in Fire Emblem as a whole with a great amount of popularity to boot. To say Ike will simply get scrapped for no reason is asinine. Especially considering the likes of Chrom or Lucina wouldn't be able to form a foundation on their own.

Simply put, it should be something your actually interested to. The character, not goes around the character. If you never take interest in the character, then what is the point? There isn't a point, all you're doing to trying to win a shallow victory. It's better to be satisfied with something instead of simply settling with it. The greatest, strongest, and longest supports come from the character. If all you have is sales and relevance going for you, you'll quick fade away into obscurity if everything crumbles underneath your feet.

Hence why I'm so glad Toon Link is back and I'm more interested by the likes of K Rool, Ridley, Ceada and Rosalina as newcomers, its more of me just liking the actual character or their concepts and character designs. Now I just want Ike & Lucario to be confirmed so the whole relevance **** is never brought up again.

Hence why I'm so glad Toon Link is back and I'm more interested by the likes of K Rool, Ridley, Ceada and Rosalina as newcomers, its more of me just liking the actual character or their concepts and character designs. Now I just want Ike & Lucario to be confirmed so the whole relevance **** is never brought up again.

The relevance argument will never cease to exist unfortunately.

To be fair, when it comes to relevance, it does have a slight affect on a characters chances...but it's slight. Literally almost to the point that it's irrelevant, but it's still there.

That is exactly why it will always be a prevalent argument. It does matter to some degree.

Depends on how you look at it. Saying that "relevance" matters just a bit is fair enough, that is, unless you make a conscious exception for Pokemon and Fire Emblem characters. In that case, not only does "relevance" have no visible impact on past rosters based on precedent, but examples exist that contradict its impact, period. Hell, the presence of retro characters as an archetype, period, immediately invalidates the notion that Smash exists first and foremost as a promotional vessel for whatever Nintendo is serving up as its latest flavor-of-the-month.

That, and the few significant character appearances in new games are significant because they flesh out the importance or uniqueness of the character (Palutena is a great example of this), not just because they're "new." Conversely, guys like Geno are never going to get into Smash, but that's not because they're "not relevant," but because they're unimportant one-shots who exist in single games. Unimportant one-shots who exist in single new games are hardly any better off at all.

You can't make everyone happy. At least one thing that may keep Lucario around is its mega evolution, but there's also Mega Mewtwo Y to keep in mind as well.

Sounds like great criteria for a dream roster. Is this a dig at the people who would rather retire immeasurable and horribly flimsy talking points like relevance and reps in favor of more concrete criteria like character importance or previous recognition by Sakurai? Or slightly-less-concrete-but-still-easily-observable-and-quantifiable criteria like character popularity?

Why not just make the Box of Fire Emblem: Awakening playable? You're getting all the rep, rep, repping you can ask for, the box couldn't possibly be "a mix between" two existing characters, and it upsets off fans of both Chrom and Roy, which is a key component of any good compromise.

Yeah it is something they probably do take into consideration, and its not the end all be all, but its not like it wont be one of the many factors they they possibly use. I dont see why so many people take it to heart if they see others jumping to conclusions with it though, people can and will believe what they want, its not always with a firm basis behind it but if they want to believe that whos it hurting if you dont listen to them anyway? I find it funny that some get furious when someone suggests the newest character out there, I certainly dont give a damn if they want to dream. The only time its crossing the line is when anime characters get brought in the mix lol

There are plenty of people who like chrom. But when it comes to debating, simply saying "I like chrom" is a terrible argument.

This is why so many people look for other supporting reasons for why chrom should be added because arguing with people who have a enormous grudge against him isn't going to be settled with "I like the character".
