Roster Prediction Discussion Thread

My concern with three Fire Emblem reps in the next Smash is this:

Out of possible newcomers, a few are sword characters. We have Takamaru, Shulk, Issacc, and to a much lesser extent Saki. These are sword characters that also bring a new series representation along with much more unique swordplay (potentially).

Fire Emblem characters, so far, have all been lords. They are from the same universe. The frontrunners are Roy and Chrom. Roy started off as a clone. Chrom is described as a perfect mix between Marth and Ike.

I think it would add more flavor to a universe about crazy specials and different worlds colliding, to pick one or two of the sword characters from not-yet-represented franchises.

Im in a similar boat. The reason I would like to see someone besides the Lords in Smash is the same reason I dont want someone like Ninten in smash. Its not they are or will be clones, but what we have seen from their similar characters is rather redundant at this point. For the case of Ninten, he will have PSI attacks, guaranteed, but we have Lucas and Ness to do that. While they do indeed play differently from eachother, id rather not have another character using the same concepts for moves.

If another Lord is added, hes gonna have a sword, its pretty hard to avoid that. Seeing as there is so much more to Fire Emblem than just the Lords, like magic, transformations, support mechanics, the list goes on. If someone like say, Robin is included, we will get something we havent seen from fire emblem: magic and tactics.

I know that they wont necessarily be clones, they could be unique characters, but they are drawing the same swordplay from the same universe. And if we are adding characters like Takamaru and Shulk, the swordplay is going to be quite redundant

I like the sword characters (I main Link) but when I know there is variety, and the potential isnt tapped into, thats what really irks me.

I mainly just want to see Robin I guess. Hes technically a villain in a sense. (Grima FS, anyone?)

Ridley is insta-main, not even giving a second thought about it if he's a character. Most wanted character since I first picked up a Metroid game, and my desire to play as him has only increased over the years.

Mega Man and K. Rool are possible alts, but besides them I don't see myself playing any other potential newcomers frequently, most of them fall into the "would be nice to play when picking Random" category.

Throw Ike in instead of Roy, or just cut Wolf or Lucas for him, and this would be a nigh perfect roster for me. I'd still be satisfied with it though.

I'm at a conflict with myself here. Although I agree that it would be nice to see a variety in the characters and the elements of the games they're from, like a magic Fire Emblem character or a fighting MOTHER character (would totally play as Duster), I also believe that it's MORE important to have the more iconic character. I also feel like this has been demonstrated with examples like Wolf over Krystal as a newcomer in Brawl.

Ultimately, I think that if the character themself is important, then that's good enough. At that point, you might as well take the time to do something unique with their moveset.

With Fire Emblem? Of course I like Chrom, but I also do like the Avatar idea. It has a lot of appeal; a MORE original character than what we've seen before, incorporating different elements of Fire Emblem into a character, being a recurring element of the franchise...but when it comes down to it, I personally would be just as happy with Chrom, because I like the character.

Grima FS would be scary. And awesome.

I kind of want his FS to be a Ignis Valflame or Grima's Truth where he launches a strong magic attack that does huge damage to foes in a large radius. As for the magic chioces, the former would refer to Arvis/Julius (the latter of which was similarly possessed by a dragon) while the latter would connect him to Grima.

Grima I feel should remain a background element if he appears.

I want Sakurai to take the time to change Ganondorf (three new specials, new smashes) and to design Mewtwo from scratch. They are the big villains/bosses from their series and should be represented as such.

I would accept this roster. I would be happy with this roster.

I myself agree that Mewtwo is a bigger priority than Lucario at this point. I WOULD miss Ike, and I would be very surprised if Roy and Chrom got in without Ike.

HOWEVER, I do like the consistency of the roster: with Lucario and Ike both cut, neither are left to dry as the only cut character, plus you maintain an equal number of Pokemon characters with Mario characters (something that I like), without adding what could be an unneccesary new Mario character.

I'd love to play on that, it's probably one of my favorite level from that game.

Speaking of stages, what do you think will be used for FE in the Wii U stage if they decide to use a specific game for reference (i.e. Mystery of the Emblem)?

My personal opinion is that only one Earthbound character needs to return. And Ness is the mascot for the series. But I am not sure on the likelihood of this, more of what I want.

I think it is OK to cut Ike if Shulk is going to fill his niche as strong swordsman with range on his blade. And then that would leave an opening in the FE series for Roy or Chrom.

Definitely. It looks like they're taking more time with Bowser in this way, so I have high hopes that Ganondorf and Mewtwo get similar treatment.

I would pick one of Chrom or Roy. I guarantee Roy wouldn't get in if Ike isn't in first.

Overall good roster. I personally don't like cuts, but if they have to happen then this is acceptable.

Theres a few characters that are acceptable to cut in my eyes, although I dont want anyone to leave, one time characters are necessary if they want to keep the roster fresh with each installment. Some of those characters are:

-Lucario or PKMN Trainer, the latter because of the time it takes to develop, the former because of keeping things fresh.

-Snake due to company relations and what have you.

And to a lesser extent

- Ike, new characters

- Lucas, series over

yeah pretty much I just don't see Pokemon having as much characters as Mario or even Zelda and thinking about the Pokemon series for me Lucario was a miss, I mean I love the character and is one of my favourite Pokemon but his moveset and gameplay just feel weird and inconsistent, when I first did try the character I was thinking like the situation with Mewtwo, the experience was similar even for me the concept of the character was similar it was like playing Mewtwo 2.0 and again I didn´t like the gameplay, so thats why I did choose to cut Lucario and maybe this time with Mewtwo as returning veteran he can have the best from his Melee time and the best of Lucario with an overhaul to his general gameplay making him Mewtwo 3.0.
And Ike is one of my favourite characters added from Brawl but seeing that Sakurai takes in much consideration what IS says about who is the newest Lord or which character has popularity to be added to the game with almost the same situation with Game Freak and Pokemon I can see that both series will depend on what they say their respective Developers.

So what you are saying is leave Ness, add Shulk and then add Chrom and Roy and cut Ike? That sounds fine for me but I don't know if Sakurai will make that decision especially becuase he loves Earthbound/Mother series.

If Chrom and Ike are so similar, why is Chrom "dull" and Ike "the best lord"?

Cause Chrom copies Ike's originality, and Ike can solo his game easily, while I can't say the same for Chrom. Chrom is considered dull because he didn't bring anything new to the lord table. On the other hand, Ike is the only lord that isn't of royal blood. Plus, in Ike's game he has a sorta of bad*** vibe, while Chrom was overshadowed by Robin and the others.

Here's my issue when we talk about cuts.

If Snake is planned AT ALL, he is going to be in the game. One does not simply go back on a contract or agreement of that sort. That's the bottom line.

Ike is one of the most popular newcomer additions to Brawl, and I would like to think Sakurai would know who the most popular characters were. Considering his popularity, Ike should be of higher importance to finish as opposed to characters with less unique movesets like Wolf or Lucas.

Other than that, I guess there is enough of a case to cut other characters. Even though I don't want cuts in any way shape or form. But I really don't think people get Snake and the scenario in which he would be added. I mean really, that's straight up business. Ike? He's a popular and unique character. I would take Ike over Wolf or Lucas any day.

Brawl was one of those games that got me into many franchises like Mother, Metal Gear, and Kid Icarus, it would be sad to see Lucas go because he's my best character (with Ike), and had enough differences to be his own character, barring specials.

Lucas shouldn't be cut nor do I see him being cut. He does share 3 specials with Ness but they act differently and have different uses.

Looking at your roster, Snake would probably be the one. Although I think Snake will come back but if I had to choice between keeping Ike or Snake I would go with Ike.

Exactly. Based on what Sakurai said about Sonic and Snake, there is no reason to believe that he wouldn't try to get the rights to him.

Most likely, Wolf two clones of a three repped franchise doesn't look so good. It would have back-lash, though, any cut would.

Snake isn't untouchable he could be cut, especially if your cut Ike and Lucario while they are on the rise again.

Yeah it's real tough to decide between the two, both have their flaws and merits, but most likely Wolf, since he's more recent, and Falco could inherit some of the differences in specials like his side and up one.

Not top priority, but definitely high enough that they would be in the game possibly above a few first party reps.
