It'd make about as much sense as Super Sonic, Giga Bowser, Metal Mario, or Giga Mac being costumes
I wouldn't necessarily say that, they are special forms but they don't warp or change that much about them aside from power and some designs like the people you listed, but I guess most people just want them as final smashes then.

While I think they're best as Final Smashes, they're not quite temporary. Pokémon may very well spend all of the battle mega evolved in X and Y.
I know, but they wear off once you get out of battle. The word "temporary" was even used to describe the concept at first by Game Freak, so yeah, they are temporary, but not as in there's a time limit of course.

The limitations on the evolution's is why thought it would work, since you can't change back unless the battle ends or you faint a costume could work just as well as a FS.

That's another way of looking at it. It could work, I don't want too many transformation Final Smashes either, but I figure that it'll work as an FS for at least Mewtwo, especially since he has two, Lucario could potentially get it as an alt then.

I see what you're trying to say now. I tought you were saying there's a time limit of sorts.

I think this new alternate costume thing is being blown out of proportion by many people.
This is how I see it:
Including only the female wii fit trainer was, for lack of a better term, unfair. The female and male trainers were sort of a duo that collectively were the wii fit trainers. Including only the female one didn't cover all the bases of the wii fit trainer. So adding the male trainer as an alternate costume made the representation solid as it should be.

Other characters are not going to be getting costume simply because they can. Those characters are complete as they are. Wario, on the other hand, had two costume but they were equally popular, iconic, and used. So just as in Wii fit trainer's case it would be unfair to represent wario with one costume.

Alt costumes are a way to properly represent a character, not a way to slip in another character or add in a one-time, abnormal costume.
100% agree. Wario was the only one who actually needed an alt costume because that is what he wears in all his other 101 appearances outside of WarioWare. When people mention/say Wario, Classic Wario is always the one who is brought up. Wii Fit Trainer and Villager are also in a need of costume. Red doesn't need an alt costume, since he is actually a character, but there is still chance for him to have Leaf.

Good afternoon, everybody. I'm happy to see that picture this morning. Both gender Wii Fit Trainers for any preference! Everybody wins!

So, that concludes October. A pretty "okay" month. Let me round up:
  • Sonic
  • Windy Hill Stage
  • New features on Pilotwings and 3D Land stage.
  • Xerneas revealed to make an appearance to an unknown extent (presumably a Poke Ball)
  • A Male Wii Fit Trainer (Possibly a confirmation of alternate costumes)
It's been a pretty decent month, if you ask me. A lot of filler, but we did get some nice pics. Now we have to see what happens in November. ALBW, Mario 3D World, F-Zero Anniversary... all at the end of November. Nothing else happens in early November.
We might have to wait for a little while to see a character.

My thoughts on Alternate costumes:

This is awesome! It makes perfect sense to include the Male Wii Fit Trainer as a secondary costume, as it is still iconic to the series and it makes sense. Other characters I could see getting this treatment if Alternate costumes are a big new addition:

Mario
- Tanooki
- Dr. Mario
- Shadow Mario
- several others...

Luigi
- Mr. L

Bowser
- Dry Bowser

Fox
- James McCloud

Pit
- Dark Pit

Link
- Fierce Deity
- Dark Link

Snake
- Big Boss (or Solid if he is Big Boss already)

Villager
- Female skin swap

Most other characters I haven't listed either don't have a reasonable alternative, like Peach, Yoshi, DK, or Diddy. For example, while Peach has her Daisy recolor, that isn't an alternate costume.

In addition, there is no reason to have any character have an alternative costume as a completely different character. AKA DK and Funky, Ike/Marth and Chrom/ Lucina, Luigi and Waluigi, Pikachu and Pichu, etc... That isn't how it works. It has to be something that the characters are sharing in the process. Mario and Dr. Mario make sense, as they are the same character, just a different costume.

I think the Wii Trainers will keep the same stats. The developers were very clever with the models. They both bulge in the same areas (chest, butt). Their limbs are similar (the female's being slightly thinner, but only by a small margin: the clever developers gave the male tight shirt sleeves on the upper arms in order to justify their same size as the less muscular female's I imagine).

Also, I think their height is the same. The male has longer calves, but the female has longer thighs so it equals out.

Found another reason why mega evolutions are better as final smashes: they're suposed to be stronger than the normal Pokémon, it would be strange if mega Pokémon were as strong as the normal ones, since alternate costumes aren't suposed to be stronger than the normal character.

Eh, might as well repeat my my thoughts on this:

The thing is...I kinda agree with him.

I don't mind a female Villager, male WFT, a female Pokemon Trainer, and similar things, but "skins" that change Sonic into Shadow, Falcon into Black Shadow, Pikachu into Raichu, Marth into Roy, etc... Yeah, those take away a lot.

It doesn't truly feel like you're actually playing as another character, even if the sound effects and such are changed.
Reducing an individual character to a costume feels like an insult, for the most part.

-----
Agreed.
If Dr. Mario wasn't made into his own character in Melee, then I'd be for the idea of him as a costume.

----
I know, you guys are probably gonna say something like "well, if there was a $h!t-colored Mario that took up a roster slot and was exactly the same as regular Mario other than the color, would you still want that to be an individual character? lolol", but that's my silly logic, and I'm sticking to it.

-----
Again, because Blaziken didn't have a movie. The closest thing it got to that was appearing as one of the first revealed Hoenn Pokemon and starring in the climaxes of both the Orange Island arc and the Battle Frontier arcs in the anime.
"You could say it was the Lucario/Zoroark of the pre-gen 3 days, but not nearly as promoted."

My thoughts on Alternate costumes:
Personally, I'd like to have some more actual costumes, like Yoshi having his Strikers outfit, or Mario having his tropical Sunshine clothes, and Snake having his design from MGS4, and maybe the Tuxedo "camouflage", among many other things.

As for skins, the ones I'd find acceptable are:

Link: Oot/Melee Link (since he and TP Link are the same "composite character" in the Smash games.

Zelda/Shiek: Same as Link.

Ganondorf: Melee/Oot Ganondorf - Unlike Link, Ganondorf's been the same incarnation throughout most of the series, so I'm not sure if this would be a true "skin".

Pokemon Trainer: Leaf, or maybe the Trainers from the other regions. (although it would be odd to have a trainer from another region controlling Kanto starters)

Villager: Female. Since it's a player avatar and all.

Also, what do you guys think about having some costumes be unlockable?

I think it only makes sense to add another character as an alternate costume if they are essentially the same character. like the two fit trainers. or female and male villager. or different breeds of nintendog.

so mostly characters should stick to other versions of themselves so it makes sense. like wario.

I really don't think Sakurai is going to go all out with alternate costumes. I see WFT, the Villager, and Wario again definitely having alts, and maybe to a lesser extent a female Pokemon Trainer.

On the topic of alt. costumes, I believe these characters are suitable for alts.:

Wii Fit Trainer: Male

Villager: Female

Pkmn Trainer: Female

Pikachu: Female (though I don`t think the difference is apparent enough to be a suitable costume)

Mario: Dr.

Wario: Overalls

Robin: Male/Female

Masked Man: Mask off

Peach: Soccer outfit

Toon Link: Outset Island outfit

^ These are all my ideas. If anyone has any others, feel free to give them. I'm curious to see what other people came up with.

I can see Toon Link's Outset Island outfit getting in. Doctor Mario as well. And of course, female Villager.

And Wario is most likely going to have two sets of costumes again as well.

He has a scarf that's about it.
Well that's not the only difference. His shoes are blue while Ness's are red, is cap is the oposite way of Ness's, and his socks are red while Ness's are white. But these are hardly noticeable.

well there's.... no wait. thats just a pallette swap.

uh, there's always like waddle dee or something though.
Waddle Dee should be his own character. He would look strange as a costume for Kirby.

Bowser: Dry Bowser
Yoshi: Yarn Yoshi
Wario: Overalls
Link: Fierce Deity Link

Marth: Awakening Outfit
Ike: Awakening Outfit
Snake: Naked Snake (Or Vice Versa in idea of Naked Snake now being the playable character)
Sonic: Metal Sonic
Villager: Female Villager
Wii Fit Trainer: Male Wii Fit Trainer

For Unconfirmed characters:

King K.Rool: Kaptain K.Rool
