Bass alt for Mega Man, kthnxbai.

Seriously though, WFT probably got an alt cuz s/he's mute and was therefore easy to just replace the model. Fem Villager is probable for the same reason: mute fighter. I wouldn't be too excited for fully developed alts where voice and particles change into a radically different character.

Wii Fit Trainer has a voice actress, it's very evident in her reveal video and in the developer direct.

Still up Peach's dress.
With alt outfits now seemingly a thing, does this bode well for Dr. Mario's reintroduction into the roster without taking up a roster slot?

First genuinely interesting thing we've seen in quite some time...

(This had better not be a damn assist trophy mocked up to look like an alt costume.)

Still, the few individuals who called Male Wii Fit Trainer as an alt should give themselves a pat on the back.

So now, I'm hoping for a female Villager, Leaf (or the opposite gender of whatever PKMN Trainer they put), Lucina, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Mega Man X, Metal Sonic, Toon Zelda, etc...

Has anyone actually even thought about Pichu for a long while? He seems like a not very good choice at first glance, but I came to liking him.
He actually seems legit.
Hell, he might even be just as likely as Zoroark.

An interestingly captivating update? What is this mindless nonsense?

Horrible joking attempts aside, this does bode considerably well for an alternate attire for the female-gender Villager, perhaps even for alternate attires of other characters. Although as to how far of an extent, we have yet to witness. That said, we finally have something substantial to discuss.
Interesting update? What is it?

...It appears that Alternate Costumes may have just been confirmed.

So then, I suppose this makes my guess for a Male Wii Fit Trainer costume to end up being correct. If the development team and Sakurai would allow a full character (and gender) swap as a costume, perhaps Dr. Mario and Pichu may not be too far off of being potential alternate costumes after all.

Isn't that right, Saturn?
I don't think Pichu will be involved with this. Dr. Mario perhaps?

Hey guys, I FINALLY got Roster Maker, so I present to you my current roster.
Thoughts?
I know I'm late, but the only things I want to kill with lots and lots of fire are the Miis (especially after today's screenshot) and Diskun. Like with Saturn, I don't understand what makes Diskun so appealing, and the Miis......fire.

I think it's safe to say we'll almost 100% see female Villager as an alt. Maybe even tomorrow? But I'm really thinking Doc's chances as an alt shot up. If he made it, I wonder if we'll see the pills return for it.

Interesting update, perhaps we can have Dark Pit, Female Villager, and Dr. Mario as alt. costumes.
Lots of people are asking for Dark Pit as an alt. costume in Miiverse.

Dark Pit was already a costume before he was even a character. Also, Man Fit Trainer confirmed, all we need for the new characters is female Villager and Civilian/Helmet-less Megaman. Though, Dr. Mario will still be the best alt costume ever.

If they can give alternate costumes different soundfiles, which I presume they're going to do with He Fit Trainer, then I'm sure they can also alter projectiles to match. Heck, if the Project M team can do it, of course Sakurai's team can.

I think we should note that alt costumes take away from being a character as Sakurai had put it before. So I think there will only be alt costumes of characters who do appear as different genders (Villager, Pokemon Trainer, etc.).

its either alternate costumes have just been confirmed, or Rule 63 has just been confirmed to have some sort of part in smash

Yes... gender-neutral generic nameless characters like Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pokemon Trainer, and Mii.

Could someone explain that quote to me please? I've been hearing people say it yet I don't understand. Costumes generally don't take anything away except for development time. I can definitely say there was not less of Wario when he had another 6 alternate colors in the form of his second costume.

And I don't know why people keep talking about Pichu as an alternate costume for Pikachu. Pichu's model would have to be grossly enlarged to match Pikachu's hitbox, or else we end up with one of the following:
[collapse="Totally the same hitbox"]

[/collapse]
[collapse="Totally worth calling a 'costume'"]

[/collapse]

Move on, guys. Pichu was fun in Melee. He'll always be fun in Melee. Sakurai has made it clear that Pokemon Company is hard enough to work with as it is. The difference between Pichu and folks like Mewtwo is that there is an actual ample demand for Mewtwo (making efforts to get him in actually worth the pain involved). Getting Pichu to work as DLC, costume, or otherwise just seems like much more of a headache than it's worth.

Been meaning to post on here for weeks but the last few weeks of updates have been meh, well until today.

I've always wanted alt costumes in Smash and today's picture is a step in the right direction. Still not sure how widely diffused they'll be. I mean we got one for Wario in Brawl and that's it. I'd love it if most characters had one but I'm not convinced. Regardless, if we don't get female villager I'll be surprised.

But he would add Robin if he wanted a magic and sword user, his uniqueness.
We haven't heard a word about Sakurai on Fire Emblem.
Sakurai is smart to not say anything about Fire Emblem...

Sakurai said:
I don't like it when a tweet or whatever leads to needless speculation getting spread around.

For example, when I tweet about playing some game, some people immediately get the idea that that character is in the new Smash Bros. Then people fan the flames on it, people start to think it's really true, people get angry about it. Nobody benefits.

Character design in many places is an art, something that the designer takes a lot of care with. The clothes are designed to compliment that character and become a part of their own defining traits. Slapping on another costume destroys a lot of that. Mario wouldn't be known for wearing over-alls if he wasn't always wearing them for instance. And instead of having an Italian plummer that always wears what he wears, we'd just remember a face and size. Which is not a great character design.

If Dr. Mario doesn't have any differences from Mario, I don't want Doc in at all.

....same goes for Pichu not being a joke.

You are aware that Pichu is about the same size as Pikachu in Melee, right?

How does this fare for ROBIN from Fire Emblem? :O
Oh geez, I hadn't thought of that.
Guess this update puts a damper on the "nameless no set gender" argument on the Tactician....

Don't know why people think Pichu is really short compared to Pikachu anyway.
4 inches doesn't make that drastic of a difference.

In fact, it's (roughly) the same height difference between the two Wii Fit Trainers, ironically.

I knew it! I knew somewhere along the line male wiifit trainer would come along now if only we knew if this was a costume or not then mega forms for pokemon would be alot more likely, same with Robin the tactician.

I don't think Alt. costumes affect Robin's chances at all anyway.
I just had a thought also, Zelda's alt. costume could be Skyward Sword Zelda, with Impa as Sheik's alt. costume. Would that work?

I think alternate costumes are great, but ONLY if they still match the character. Male Wii Fit Trainer is still Wii Fit Trainer. A female Villager is still Villager. A female Pokemon Trainer is still Pokemon Trainer.

But things like "Impa as Sheik" would be strange to me. It isn't the same character any more. I'd argue that Lucina/Marth would be strange too; I follow the idea that Lucina used Marth's name and all, but they're still separate characters.

Heck, though. Someone could argue with me that a female Pokemon Trainer could be different.

So it's still possible Dark Pit could have his own character slot.

I wouldn't mind that.

I would say that this is something separate from what we've seen with things like...Daisy color scheme Peach or Waluigi color scheme Luigi. They're references to other characters, but they aren't entirely different skins to make the character look like that character, like what we're seeing here with the Male Wii Fit Trainer.

Assuming Male Wii Fit Trainer is just a costume...

People are probably considering proportions rather than an actual height difference, not that it matters too much as most characters are rescaled anyways.

Admittedly, only way I see Pittoo with his own slot at this point is if he uses the Dark Pit Staff. As in, a reason to warrant being on his own.

If he's just going to use the Silver Bow, then he'll just go the way of Mr. Fit. Which is perfectly acceptable.

Even then, considering both Pichu and Pikachu are cartoonish and have their limbs stretch for attacks, it wouldn't be a stretch (no pun intended, I swear) to have the Pichu model stretch a little more on the limbs to match Pikachu's attacks (mainly for leg and tail attacks).
