I want Ridley in Brawl... SO. FRIGGIN'. MUCH.
So I want Ridley in Brawl. Badly. But I'm a skeptic by nature, see. Not a cynic, but a skeptic. I think it's because Nintendo has conditioned me to have low expectations, so I simply don't get my hopes up for something as thrilling as Ridley in Brawl. I err on the side of doubt.
In this case, here's what worries me.
First of all, let me say that Ridley's size is NOT an issue. Again, it's NOT an issue. Bowser was ten times bigger than Mario in SM64; they scaled him down for Brawl (and most of the Mario Kart / Sports as well). Kirby is only eight inches tall; they scaled him
up. In the event that they use Olimar, who is the size of a quarter, or Chibi-Robo, who is several inches tall, they'll scale both up. Suffice it to say, size is not an issue. In fact,
Sakurai already scaled down Ridley's size in the Melee intro!
HOWEVER, the fact that they can tweak his size does not make his design any less
complex. The sheer complexity of Ridley's design boggles the mind. The spindly limbs, elongated torso, articulated neck, immense wing structure, multi-segmented tail... Ridley is like an assembly of clockwork moving in unison. This is what I think might dissuade Sakurai from including Ridley. It's the sheer complexity of his design, which is unlike most of the bipedal, more humanoid characters in Smash Bros...
But, if Sakurai wants a challenge... Ridley is the single best character they could add to Brawl. Seriously. He's
perfect. Look at everything he brings to the table.
- Representation of the Metroid franchise: he appeared in Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime, Metroid Zero Mission, and the upcoming Metroid Prime 3.
- He's a VILLAIN, upping the bad guy count.
- He can FLY, adding to the air game, as Sakurai desires.
- He is COOL and UNIQUE, a badass space dragon with a body profile unique unto himself.
- He (apparently) ranked high on Sakurai's list, in Japan where nobody cares about Metroid -- remarkable, since if Japan wants Ridley and they don't like Metroid, then Ridley's a good addition since the rest of the world loves him as well.
These are some AMAZING credentials. And Sakurai has certainly thought about Ridley in the past. He's in the background of the Metroid stage in SSB1. He's in the intro to Melee. And he's a trophy, as seen below:
Go back to Melee and examine his trophy closely with the camera. IT'S ARTICULATED. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm nearly positive they fiddled with a working model of Ridley at some point. He may have proven too complex to properly implement at the time, but now, with Brawl nearly two years in development (they began roughly a year before E3 2006), they might finally put him in. And this is where I don rose-tinted shades, and the skeptic begins to take a backseat to wild hope...
