I hope you guys understand that reaction times when just hitting a button after seeing a simple stimulus isn't the same as being able to discriminate between stimuli and then react accordingly.

Tech chasing and the like would fall under discrimination, which is a type of reaction that can be greatly improved with practice, which isn't the case with basic reaction times that this test demonstrates.

We know. It's just fun to compare.

0.2088 average first time.

I tend to do better on these when I stare at something close to the green light instead of directly at it. I respond faster when my eyes aren't directly focused at the change, maybe I'm reacting to the red light turning off and the green light turning on.

hmm

I'm trying too hard to metagame the online reaction time test lols

Reaction times are better if you don't focus on the object that you want to change, it's how I always do them now. Too bad that doesn't apply to smash at all >.>

Apparently it's easier to understand a general change in something's state if you aren't focused on it. I bet if it was a subtle change you'd have to focus on it a lot more and that'd drop reaction times...

All I've ever heard one can do to improve reaction time is to do things like this a lot.
Adrenergic agonists, xanthines and eurogics came to mind as soon as I saw this thread lol

Also having sufficient sleep, glucose stores, oxygen intake, and obv limiting distractions.

My average is 0.228, even though I gave it a try yesterday and got 0.24/0.25.

Seeing Leffen's and Zhu's times, I think this is a Falco thing haha.

To all of those saying that this test doesn't matter because smash is complex. I think it is actually quite relevant. Let me explain.

A lot of times in smash you will predict your opponent is going to do something. Most of the time you will wait to see the action and then respond to it, but sometimes you won't even wait to determine what it was they were actually doing. In this case, simple reaction time would be relevant because the situation would be

1. Wait for "a change" of any sort
2. Respond with one option.

Now while smash is pretty chaotic at times, I'd say waiting for your opponent's character to do "anything" would count as something that would use simple reaction time (it didn't matter what they did, as you were going to respond with the same action regardless, trusting your "read")

Not only that, but (correct me if I'm wrong), simple reaction time is the fastest type of reaction. It's going to be far faster than choice reaction and something being "too fast to react to" is a perfectly valid claim in smash. Though I think it becomes a little less relevant because you focus more on "confirming" as you get better. For instance, when tech chasing, you don't usually wait to see which way they teched and then dash at them (unless you're a really fast character and can get away with that), but rather you run at them and then change your mind later if they didn't tech the way you thought they would. In a sense, your just allotting yourself more time to react and be successful by initiating earlier, and using your reaction time to make adjustments. But this only really applies when you have a "feel" for what your opponent is going to do (or the risk for failure is small, so your willing to make a small commitment even without a read), so it's still a factor worth considering.

That's my take on it.

@dark sonic

yea, i get where they're coming from, but there is definitely situations in smash that call for this specific type of reaction speed

an example i could give is some times i'll knock a fox or falco off the stage
and the whole time he's within range to make it on the stage from his side b, i am expecting it

i'm waiting waiting waiting, and though his height may change, responding w/ the appropriate attack to punish his height is second nature

if he's high, i'm waiting for the side b and when i see it i'll jump and nair
if he comes within ftilt range, i'm waiting fo the side b and i ftilt it
and if he passes all of those, and i know he has to UB, then i move onto those set of options

in smash you'll find that you prepare for the option you most likely think is going to happen, and if it happens then boom you attack it
but if it doesn't happen then you switch what your prepared for
