Funky Kong is a generally popular DK character and was included as a character in Mario Kart Wii, and IMO if there are going to be new clones and Semi-Clones, Funky Kong is a top runner.
And I generally like him despite the hatred of him in Mario Kart.
Chance: 10%
If we were to get in, he would be a DK clone. The Tropical Freeze port is too new for anything from that to be incorporated into his moveset
Want: 50%
he's a pretty funky guy, and I wouldn't mind seeing him. A clone I wouldn't mind honestly.
Chances-5%. The TF port was far too late to influence him getting in. He could be a clone, but I don't think Sakurai would do that, as it would be a disservice to his character
Want-15% (30% if unique, 0 as clone). I don't think he'd be a good clone. Let's compare Funky and Galacta Knight. Funky has a surfboard, items, etc. He could get in as a unique character. Galacta, However, exists only as Meta Knight's foe, he's prefect for a clone role. Indifferent about unique
Not the first DKC newcomer everyone has in mind, but he's a low effort addition, given he plays quite similar to DK in Tropical Freeze Switch. He could be a late clone addition tho, and he's clearly popular to boot. The whole idea of Funky Kong being recent might just push the idea.

If Funky mode was his only claim to fame then yes his chance would be 0; however, he appears as an NPC in almost every DK game. I wouldn't be surprised if he has more appearances than Dixie and K Rool with how often this guy pops up. His roles in the games are minor in comparison to the other 2 but if Sakurai doesn't want to use them I wouldn't be too surprised to see Funky. That being said in a series with multiple playable characters it's not likely the next character would be a minor NPC.
Want: 0%
Funky a cool character but I have no desire to see him in Smash as anything other than a trophy. If he happens I won't be broken up about it but I certainly wouldn't be jumping with joy either.
Cranky is a main character in Jungle Climber/King of Swing while Funky is a background character in it for 5 seconds.
Cranky is in Returns, Funky isn't.
Cranky is in TF Wii U as playable while Funky is a shopkeeper.
Cranky is arcade DK.
Cranky was much more popular before some random meme mode that is irrelevant to Smash's development cycle based off timing and being overpowered in a Mario spin off.
That's to say nothing of K. Rool and Dixie.
Ha! I forgot how overpowered the Flame Runner was. I was really deep into the Mario Kart Wii competitive scene (managed to make it to 9.6k VR when the limit was 9.99k but the hackers made it impossible to fully advance) and you would see Funkys and Daisys all over the place. I used Rosalina on the Flame Runner and loved the challenge. Item management in MKWii could be the key to a win or lose at times.
Funky is actually popular in Japan, which is something I did not consider. I believe he scored highly in some poll they had over there about Donkey Kong characters. I think that may increase his chances a bit. Gonna go from 3% to 10% fully edited on my original post.
Chance: 9%
Yeesh. Strictly speaking, he has modern exposure and an inexplicable persistence compared to most other side characters, and he's also been around since the first Donkey Kong Country. But Donkey Kong gets few enough characters as it is, with a couple of choice selections already ahead of him in the line.
Want: 2%
I'm no fan of the 90's cool kid aesthetic, spice that it is to the flavor of the games. And heads will roll if this Kong gets in before other, more passionately-supported candidates do. This isn't even going over the moveset he'll get, which, knowing how it usually goes, would probably be a DK clone with different specials.
A surfboading gorilla. I still dont know how he got in Mario Kart Wii.
Chance: 20%
I guess one could say that Funky Kong could be a sort of clone for Donkey Kong (even though there are problems with that) but clones are EXTREMELY unpredictable, and are decided last minute. So taking the clone character out of the equation and Funky doesn’t really have a shot. He was added in DKTF too late for Sakurai to consider, and even then characters like Dixie and King K. Rool are more prominent and wanted than Funky Kong. So I don’t really think he has a shot.
Want: 50%
I would rather have King K. Rool and Dixie get added before Funky Kong but at least his surfboard could lead well into an interesting moveset.
Chance: 10%
At this moment, I see Funky Kong getting in more as an Assist Trophy than as a playable character. Turning him into a semiclone of Donkey Kong could happen, but that wouldn't do Funky justice. I don't own the Switch port of Tropical Freeze, but from what I've seen in the NEW FUNKY MODE, something could be done with the surfboard. Maybe not his entire moveset, but something of a starting point.
Want: 50%
I am not in favor nor against Funky. He'll get in as a plain old trophy no matter what. But, I'd be perfectly fine if Funky was given the Assist Trophy treatment.
Funky Kong
Chances: 5%
He's had a surge of popularity recently but I think it's a tad late to help him out. Without the surge of popularity he's still a decently popular and important character, which on it's own is great, but he's one that has to compete with Nintendo All-Stars like Dixie, King K. Rool and Cranky, so uh, good luck with that.
Want: 35%
I'd have no problems with Funky Kong. While I'm not rooting for him I love the character's personality, he'd be a welcome addition for sure.
- New Smash Bros. Game with Funky Mode! ...he’s a top contender. Sure, Dixie and a certain reptilian king are more requested but none of them have same charm as Funky Kong. The Tropical Freeze port is all about him; he’s the poster boy for it.
Want: 100%
- I’d love to play as him in a Smash game. He’s got the moves and style.
People were torn. On one hand this is a nice meme and we do want new DK content. On the other hand is this the DK content we want? Seen as unlikely, but not entirely unwelcome.
Today we got KOS-MOS, the mascot and one of the main characters of Xenosaga. Xenosaga is owned by Namco Bandai and was created by Monolith Soft. Will her frequent crossover appearances, her XC2 cameo, and the possible Xenosaga remaster help her? Also please predict the scores for Azura from Fire Emblem tomorrow.
KOS-MOS
Chance 8%
While her chance is there, it's quite low. As third party who is overall obscure I don't think it will happen.
Want: 1%
There are many characters I'd rather over her. I'm not fond of the idea of letting just any third party character in Smash.
If Namco got a second character she’d sort of makes sense because she’d blend right in with Shulk. She’s cool but I don’t think she’s too likely because third parties usually go with their bigger names.
Having a cameo in Xenoblade2 is the only thing she has going for her. And I don't even know if the timing was on her side for that.
Compared to the other third-party characters she's just way too much of a "literally who."
She carries no game history and has barely any support. It would make no sense to include her amongst the likes of Mario, Pikachu, Sonic or Pacman.
Want: 0%
I barely know anything of this character, besides that she's a rare blade in Xenoblade chronicles 2, which is on my list of games I'll never play.
Chance: 1%
What does she have going for her? A cameo in Xenoblade 2? Yeah not happening.
Want: 1%
Not much to say about her, there’s pretty much nothing that would make me want her in, but I’ll give her more that 0 because I wouldn’t hate her.
Azura prediction: will her popularity with the third wave FE fanbase overcome her lateness to the game, the larger popularity of other characters and the butthurt hatred of all potential FE characters on this site? This one is really hard to pin but I really want those extra noms so I’ll go with 8%
Chance 5%: The TF port should be irrelevant to Smash 5's development given the timing, he's one of the more obscure DK characters outside of that mode. He's also jostling for the DK slot with K. Rool and Dixie. I've always thought K. Rool alone or K. Rool and Dixie would get in at the same time, I don't see Funky getting in at all.
The only way it'll happen is as a clone of DK. For multiple reasons that's awkward when you consider DK's moveset.
Want 0%: I actively don't want him in over K. Rool and his moveset would revolve around obscure props to work. The new TF easy mode is a really dumb addition to that game. I don't want Dixie but there's far stronger arguments for why she might be a good newcomer.
Kos Mos Chance 7%: I don't see why the Namco character wouldn't be Heihachi or some other Tekken character. If you wanna stretch, you could say Nightmare or Ivy from Soul Calibur. I'm not gonna say it's zero, but it'd be a very weird choice.
Kos-Mos Want 2.5%: She directly opposes series I am interested in with Tekken and Soul Calibur. I know very little about the character and there's nothing wrong with her, so I'll give her a little higher than zero. She seems okay enough.
Chance: 4%
Remember when people claimed Henry Fleming wouldn't get in due to his name's literature roots? Well KOS-MOS is a reimagining of a religious figure, most notably Jesus Christ's good friend Mary Magdalene.
This **** is bananas.
However she is owned by Namco Bandai, has some popularity and fits into the Xenoblade series so I GUESS anything is possible.
Want: 50%
Never played the game but the fact KOS-MOS is the partner of JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF in the game makes my mind boggle.
That we might get Christ as a trophy in Smash Bros. is such a bizarre thought.
KOS-MOS herself is alright I guess, but I'm so stuck on her being a fictional teenage anime android prototype vessel for Mary Magdalene I can't really envision her in game properly.
Azure Prediction: 6%
Once seen as one of the more likely characters from Fates, she's taken a massive tumble in popularity.
Nomination: Meowth X 5
Kos-Mos Chance - 3%
3rd parties are always going to face a harder time getting in, and I feel there are bigger names out there than her for sure. I also don't think her cross over with Xenoblade is that important as we'd likely actually get a Xenoblade character if Sakurai is looking at that series and not jump to the guest. Want - 0%
I have little to no interest in her from a design stand point. You could place her into the legion of the anime waifu and likely have a hard time spotting her with her generic build and impractical revealing outfit. I'd like to keep 3rd parties more reserved for huge names and icons. I feel she fails that as well, otherwise I'd give her some points for possible move sets.
Chance: 15%
Namco is most likely working on Smash Switch. It's not far-fetched to believe we'll get another Namco character on the roster in exchange for their help during development. After all, Capcom and SEGA got two characters, so why wouldn't Namco ask for one more, especially if they're working on the game? And while Namco has other choices for a potential Smash newcomer, KOS-MOS is one of their premier choices for crossovers. She has plenty of cameos and crossover appearances in games Namco is involved in, and has strong ties to Nintendo through Monolith and the Xeno games. It's worth mentioning that Namco might have plans for Xenosaga, as they recently trademarked Xenosaga 3's subtitle.
Does this add up to a Smash appearance? Probably not. But she definitely has a real chance at making it.
Want: 100%
She's one of my most wanted characters. I absolutely adore her in Xenosaga and Xenoblade 2, plus she'd be a pretty unique character with all of her different weapons.
KOS-MOS Chances: 20%
She is pretty much the go to Namco crossover character, with games she appeared in consist of Namco X Capcom, the Project X Zone games, the Super Robot Wars OG Saga games, Tales of Hearts and Xenoblade 2 as well as a few cameos. The best reasoning for her getting in as a second Namco rep lie in Xenoblade since that is a none Namco owned game (though it is made by Monolith Soft) and also isn't a game series known for being a crossover series like Project X Zone and Super Robot Wars. Still, given how Namco was shafted for a second rep last game despite Namco being the ones actually working on the game doesn't give her much hope. And even then sadly Namco may even go with something from Tekken or SoulCaliber given how popular those are. Lloyd Irving or another Tales of character is also pretty likely give that the former got a costume.
Edit: bumped her by 10. It’s possible that Namco could think Ryu already fills the generic Karate man niche and that sword users are over saturated in Smash. Her chances are still low though.
Want: 30%
She's not my first pick for a Namco 2nd rep. Personally would rather have Klonoa, but even with his possible movie it's still a pipe dream. I'd be fine with her getting in, if anything would bug me it would be Heihachi or a SoulCaliber character.
