Moveset might also be an issue. I can't see him digivolving for anything else other than his Final Smash. (Greymon's a bit on the big side) All Agumon himself can do to my knowledge is using claw attacks and a fireball.

Canonically, Agumon has several different fire breath attacks, some more resembling Bowser's, as well as a wide variety of claw attacks, an axe and, in one incarnation, wings made out of pure energy. His moveset potential may not be huge but it was big enough for Digimon's own item based fighting games and he'd at least have more animation variety than Sonic.

He's not Guilmon or Patamon and this isn't Tekken so he can't come tag teamed with Marcus but my preference for other digimon doesn't stop him from being one of my bigger wants.

He's a big name from the 90s, which is very much the nostalgic in era these days, his company has a rather large foot in the door and he has the same rival appeal as Sonic. Unfortunately, though, his popularity has dwindled along with that of his series and Namco have other characters with more current relevance.

A Digimon? Well, looking at the franchise, there's still games being made, with one having been released in 2017 in the big three regions. There's another after, but that's Japan only for the time being. I also saw a 7-year gap between Digimon games releasing in North America. Probably not good for the little guy.

So was Pokemon vs Digimon a thing in the late 90s/early 2000s? I wouldn't know because I didn't play either one back then. I only got into Pokemon starting with Platinum. I never saw anything with Digimon. If I ever did, I certainly didn't recognize it. Being part of Bandai-Namco, I'd rather see someone else from them get in.

And now, Pokémon's going strong, while barely anyone hears of Digimon anymore. Guess we all knew how that one would turn out. Kinda like Yo-Kai Watch on a longer timescale. Pro tip: Don't make a Pokémon competitor - you won't be able to as well as Game Freak.

I know next to nothing about the Digimon franchise, but I can't see a reason to put in a third-party no-longer-relevant character like Agumon for any reason other than "lol they used to be rivals."

His design looks cool enough, I guess, but I'm stingy with third parties, and Digimon never was a 'friendly' rivalry like Sonic/Mario. It was more of a 'If you like this you're stupid.' Thus, a lot of people really have strong dislikes of Agumon, and I'll pass on him.

I much rather have Angewomon, Lillymon, Myotismon, Piedmon, well a huge list of who I rather see as a Digimon rep.

ok so Pokemon and Digimon at one point were bitter rivals like Mario and Sonic, Pepsi and Coke,Target and Walmart etc. The thing is unlike those Digimon kinda fadded out as Pokemon has stayed strong. Digimon hasn't had a game since 2015/2016 depending on region. And once again he would be a 3rd party up against more icon and better choices for it. THe only reason he has was he was a rival to pokemon years ago. But he never stood the test of time.

As a westerner, it's very easy to look at it that way but the two actually came into existence at a similar time in japan and they were initially quite distinct. Digimon was the result of Bandai wanting a more male-oriented version of their Tamagotchi brand. It was more about raising and forming a bond with your fighting monster than collecting tonnes of them.

The fact that Digimon was so much slower to come overseas and got an anime (which Pokemon ironically ripped off elements of) on the popularity of its adverts did it no favours when it came to comparison.

Heck, I dismissed it as derivative when I was a kid but my parents made me watch it and it turned out to be a far superior show.

Digimon may be an iconic franchise due to its immense popularity in the late 1990s, but it unfortunately does not have the lasting popularity now for Sakurai to give him much consideration. He unfortunately just is not as much of a gaming icon as Snake, Cloud, or Pac-Man. Even Digimon's impact on the Tamagotchi lines does not help it much as that eventually faded into obscurity as well. Agumon also likely did not do well enough on the ballot to consider him over any other Bandai Namco rep who still has lasting popularity, like Heihachi or Nightmare. As much as I would love to see a Pokemon versus Digimon battle in Super Smash Bros., it simply will not be happening any time soon.

I love the concept of Digimon being creatures created in a digital world who are essentially partners with those they travel with. I also think Digivolution would make for a very interesting mechanic and could be a welcomed mid-battle transformation mechanic, especially if it were to be unique to Agumon.

Now, when Digimon is barely as relevant as it used to be, I doubt anyone would get in over Namco's more relevant and popular franchises. Unlike Crash Bandicoot, Digimon has had consisent anime releases and even recent video games. I would argue that his relevance at the current time is greater than Megaman's was before Smash 4.

Now, that's not to say that I expect Agumon or that he can compete with Megaman in any other way but calling him "dead and buried" is kinda dumb when far deader characters have been in Smash before.

And, speaking of idiocy, I understand that it stems from your own personal bias against the character but claiming that the series mascot, who even appears in its logo, wouldn't be the first digimon picked is way up there in that regard.

There's a good reason why Agumon has never appeared in a Namco x game. Those games are celebrations of classic Namco titles and Digimon isn't one of them. Digimon is a classic Bandai title.

The only reason so many people got into liking Digimon was because of the anime. No one ever talks about Digimon games, which is the one thing Smash Bros. really cares about.

Unfortunately for the little guy Digimon's popularity is nowhere near where it was in the 90s, and there's not a lot of support for him at this point, which isn't good for a third party. There's also plenty of competition for a second spot for the company and I'm not sure one will even exist. Heihachi and Lloyd feel like the frontrunners to me, and I'm not sure yet if he's the first choice behind those two. It's just not looking good for the digital monster.

1 - The rivalry between Digimon and Pokémon will really shine in that choice. I literally do not see any other franchise in Video Game history that could get into Smash as a Pokémon Rival.

2 - Digimon has two games named "Rumble Arena", extremely similar to Smash Bros. And for the record, it was probably from those games that the Final Smash were taken.

3 - Super Smash Bros 4 was literally developed by Namco Bandai, Pokkén was also! Amazing how Digimon and Pokémon are extremely close recently! This would be a huge chance for the two franchises to meet!

4 - For those who believe that Digimon did not start as a Video Game: Yes it started! Virtual Pets were the start of Digimon! Very similar to "Mr. Game & Watch", but a type of Video Games not yet represented in Smash Bros.

As far as I’m concerned, a Tamagotchi clone is a toy, not a video game. Even if you wanna argue semantics, there’s no arguing that’s Digimon as a franchise has really fallen from grace; it still puts out game, sure, but they’re incredibly niche. I was at one point very much into Digimon. I watched the whole first season of the anime I collected cards, though I never played any of the Digimon games. In fact Agumon's mega form Wargreymon was my favourite Digimon. That said unlike Pokemon I lost interest in the series and as of now while he'd make for an interesting fighter (because fire-breathing mech t-rex), he's not exactly a character I'd be upset about if he's not in.

Chance: 7% - Heihachi stands strong as the obvious next Bandai Namco choice, which alone is a massive blow to Agumon’s chances. Even if we were to get a third character from them, there’s Tales, Soul Calibur, and other series to compete with. If we get to three characters, I think Agumon might get some extra attention due to the rivalry with Pokémon and Smash’s predilection for making those dream matches come true. But, I don’t see us getting three Namco characters anytime soon, and Tales in particular seems to be much better poised for the spot considering the Lloyd Mii costume.

Want: 90% - As someone who lived through the playground Pokémon vs. Digimon wars, this would be almost as big of a rivalry realized as Mario and Sonic. He’s not my most wanted, but if we got a trailer where the Smash logo sliced in and the Digimon intro theme started playing, I’d lose my mind with hype.

Dark Samus: 8.56% - Not lookin good for this dark doppelgänger. Unless the “Baby Metroid in Fed Force was cloned from Dark Samus” theory is correct, her time in the franchise is done now. This is probably her last chance to make it in, but people seem pretty pessimistic on her.

Sylux: 9.21% - Even though he’s not been voted on yet, Sylux is already a strong contender for “most overrated” in my book. Aside from cameos, he’s not even done anything yet that puts him above the level of the other hunters, yet I see higher prediction scores all around for him than Dark Samus. If there’s debate about Spring Man and Rex being too soon, then Sylux should be dead in the water considering we haven’t even seen GAMEPLAY of the title he’s getting his big break in. Tomorrow’s going to be... interesting, for sure.

He's not exactly super famous or as relevant as he used to be. He also doesn't have a huge history of appearances on Nintendo consoles. As a Namxo character, he's also got competition with much more likely characters.

I liked Digimon a lot when I was a kid, but I don't really want him in Smash. I mm not against it, but I wouldn't get excited on the slightest for his inclusion.
