Obscure pre-Brawl arcade game, Namco already has Pac-Man, and I'm confident that we won't get any other third-party playable character.

Magikarp is one of the most well-known Pokémon, but popularity doesn't excuse everything. Given Magikarp's reputation as the weakest Pokémon, especially with the massive strenght difference between the fish and its evolution, there is now way Sakurai will choose it in the playable roster, especially over Jigglypuff or Mewtwo, unless he wants to create the absolute joke character for Smash. Given Magikarp's reputation, it would fit this role perfectly, but it's actually not worth expecting it to happen.
Playable Magikarp would also be the answer to why Goldeen was chosen as the Splash Poké Ball summon over Magikarp since the first Smash Bros. lol
Magikarp is still more likely than Sceptile anyway

That said, seing Sakurai promote the well-known weakest Pokémon of all times to a Smash playable character would be absolutely hilarious, and I'm pretty sure that the few moves it learns in the Pokémon games would create a decent Smash B-moveset, though the custom moves are problematic due to Magikarp's extremely poor movepool. There also are several Final Smash ideas (full-power Flail like when Magikarp uses Flail in Pokémon games with only one HP remaining, summoning the Shiny Gyarados from Lake of Rage, or Hydro Pump as a reference to the Shiny Magikarp event).

Chance: 4% - It was a heart breaker hearing Pac Man being in the game. Not only because I don't like him, but because he's a Namco character. IdolM@ster is one of Namco's better selling IPs in Japan, and it's newest release on the PS3 sold out on opening day. They certainly have the popularity in Japan, but they don't have strong enough ties to Nintendo. Their one game for DS didn't even include the main cast. Yes, surprisingly I'm not being bias for once in my life. A character from this series could be very original though, as they could either have a trio or a solo character, either way they could have music based attacks that they can actually do in their games, unlike a certain trio of white unappealing choir boys. If they had a solo character it would probably be Haruka, who is pretty much considered the main character of the series. Chihaya (very prominent character) Takane, or Makoto (both can fight) could make good solo options as well. If they went with a trio group it would most likely be the only trio that is set in stone within IdolM@ster 2. Ryuuguu Komachi :

For those of you who haven't played an Idolm@ster game, the objective of the game is to score points by impressing in Dance, Visual, and Vocal categories. Perhaps Sakurai could use that idea to come up with one move a piece for each type of category. I'd put them in the boat with Crono, Neku, Amaterasu, and Phoenix Wright. Pipe Dream Third Parties.

Want: 100% - If I could chose an Idolm@ster Character and have no more newcomers, I probably would chose an IdolM@ster character. Idolm@ster as a franchise has amazing visuals and music, and because of the amount of content the series could bring to Smash Bros. I would love to have them join.

First I'd like to post my favorite song from the franchise Smoky Thrill:

Just the idea of having this song in the game makes me think it would be the best Smash Bros ever. I would also like to think they could bring with them the item customization that they have with them in their games, it would add a neat idea that would be better than stickers, costumes and such to boost attack, speed, and jump would be pretty cool. Custom costumes being in the game for all characters besides Miis would make the game look even better. Stage wise, I would like to think it would be a concert hall almost like the theater in Paper Mario. I think it would look pretty friggin amazing.

Point I'm trying to make is, with their awesome popularity in Japan, what they bring to the table, and the originality they have, they'd be an amazing addition to the Smash universe. I wish they could somehow get more recognition in the US because all they have is a port. Heck, even their anime didn't get over here, only the spin-off series did. Smash and Idolm@ster is a match made in heaven and would be good for both sides.

Before unfounded accusations of a "troll" rating surface, allow me to concisely explain why it is quite logical that we would receive Magikarp as a newcomer. Before we begin, I feel obligated to assert that every Pokemon is viable, GameFreak chooses who to promote. Your arbitrary sentiment that he is not one of the "badass" legendary Pokemon is not relevant in the slightest. It is fallacious to pretend that he is not likely just because we predominantly get the most "important" Pokemon. Might I remind everyone of Pichu in Melee or Mewtwo's omission in Brawl? It is blatantly apparent that popularity is not the sole factor to consider regarding Pokemon roster selection. Magikarp is similar to Zubat. Everyone pretends to labor a disdain for the character, but in all honesty, as one of the most notable Pokemon, he quickly warms their hearts. Smash fans have yet to experience this emotion. Sakurai will want to capitalize on this notion. Sometimes you have to appeal to the real Pokemon players.

Fun fact: In the popular Pokemon anime, Team Rocket uses a Magikarp inspired vehicle to traverse the waters. It would be some great fan-service to Team Rocket if Magikarp was included.

First of all, you must understand that I am not insinuating that just Magikarp will be playable. I believe that there will be an evolution gimmick involving Gyarados. One of the most prominent Pokemon to ever grace the series. Gyarados is prevalently featured on many competitive Pokemon teams and Magikarp himself is memetic. "But transformation characters are removed from the game, Morbid!" No. The ones present in the game were removed, that does not confirm that they will not appear with different functionality. There is one oddity that many of you overlook... Goldeen. Why was Goldeen featured in a Magikarp-esque role for multiple games if not for Sakurai saving him in a future installment. I theorize that the engine could not handle Magikarp, therefore Sakurai decided to wait for a "next-gen" console to implement him in all of his glory.

He offers some of the most diversity to the roster as well. He is a fish, you could not possibly convince me that that is not unique. Splash is one of the most iconic Pokemon moves, but over time GameFreak has given Magikarp more viable moves, such as Bounce. Clearly, they are promoting him through his various updates. The real potential comes with the aforementioned gimmick. Gyarados, after the transformation, could buff himself with Dragon's Dance, for instance. I am sure that super-armor would be heavily implemented to allude to his hard scales and whatnot.

Again, I am being utterly serious. Magikarp is severely underrated because he is interpreted as an individual. Remember that Shiny Gyarados is one of the first "shiny" Pokemon that trainers obtained. He was also featured prominently in the first Pokemon movie. With the sixth generation focus on shiny (and Mega Evolutions) it becomes overt that Magikarp is one of the more ideal choices. I am not implying that he is a shoe-in character; however, I do believe that he has a chance. Honestly, I would be surprised if he was not on the main roster. I suppose he could be a DLC character as well. It depends on whether or not he gets a material role in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

If that is not enough, feel free to further delude yourselves into believing that he is a "joke" Pokemon. The possibility is real and I never blatantly disregard the possibility of a viable candidate such as Magikarp.

Magikarp was one of my favorite Pokemon before it was cool.

I feel that Star Fox is more likely to shrink than it is to grow. Still, if it does grow, Krystal will almost definitely be the cause of that; she's a perfectly viable and popular character with solid movepool. I don't think she'll make the cut just like she failed to in Brawl, but there's a small possibility. In terms of want? She's really overhated. I'm not a big fan of her, but I see nothing wrong with her existence like many do. She could be interesting, but I'm not a big enough fan of her to want her specifically, and I don't want to see Star Fox get a disproportional amount of content.

That's pretty fair. Her biggest knock against her is the fact that Star Fox has been off the radar in recent years, meaning that if she got in the odds are that she'd be supplanting Falco or Wolf...which is unlikely, but who knows? Moveset potential's been the big thing this time around, and if Falco got demoted to Fox's alternate costume or something...which is also unlikely, but still. >_>

The hate for her's uncalled for, yeah. I can see why some people dislike how she's been portrayed, but scapegoating her for the series taking a turn (and dipping a little in quality) while simultaneously putting SF64 on a pedestal and acting like the series should reboot from it...honestly feels like a genwunner kind of mentality. Why scrap something that can still be redeemed? Hopefully the new game is well done enough that it redeems her as a character and makes the hatedom settle down.

And just maybe her moveset potential'll help her sneak into the roster. It got Rosalina the nod over older Mario characters, was the reason Greninja was chosen over any other Gen 6 Pokemon, and helped Robin win out over Chrom. But would moveset potential help a character get in that's been in the doldrums for the last eight years? That's harder to say.

Oh...and good luck at college. As long as you learn to manage your time, it's a hell of a lot better than high school.

It doesn't make sense to me why this character would get the low ratings that everyone is suggesting. Our last Shulk rating gave him a 50% chance, and it would be weird to see such a new and strongly pushed IP as Xenoblade not receiving an AT. If they were to receive an AT rather than a character, then they would probably go the route they did with Sin and Punishment, Golden Sun, Starfy, etc and use the main protagonist. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Okay, the day's introduction is out of the way, so it's about time we have a little chat. Before I get to the elephant in the room, let me address something concerning the game's immediate future. For at least the next three days (and possibly up to a solid week, but definitely no more than that), I will be unable to update because I'm moving into college and starting my freshman year. I'll be able to visit here, but I won't have enough time to handle updates myself. @Brawler610 will be taking the reigns for a few days as I adjust, and I expect you to treat him with the highest respect. Please don't start too many arguments while he's sacrificing his time to run things, especially on Bandana Dee's day. Also, as Hades so gently warned you, this is not the leaks thread. You can talk about them in your ratings, but not even the slightest argument revolving around leaks will be tolerated.

Speaking of leaks, they're inevitable. They're the main reason the brunt of our game is scheduled to end two weeks before the game launches. Still, that doesn't mean we have to drop everything as soon as one of them comes out; we will continue with our normal schedule in the face of all leaks. With a newcomer from Idolm@ster, he'd be giving them all a gift; A character they love from a series they love, rather then getting every character they made in the game.
Oh, and I know we have Pac-Man, but I assure you these guy's would have a love for Idolm@ster much more then they do Pac-Man.

Exactly. Fire Emblem made it over here thanks to Smash. I wish Namco would bring Idolm@ster over on console and not crappy old iOS.


I know most of you have no feelings towards the Idolm@ster franchise, but due to the fact all 90 some nominations for the topic came from me, I would really appreciate it if everyone could put some reasoning behind their answers. It took a really long time for me to get the topic here, and it'd be annoying to have just a few people actually respond to it.
